So I went to pick up Dead Rising today... only to find out it wasn't there (so I was already kinda sad), and unknowingly walked in on a conversation a friend of mine was having about Garfield being a dead/dying lonely kitty.

Anyways, apparently in 1989 Jim Davis did a Garfield story arc that indicated that Garfield was dead and that every single comic was basically just the imagination of a dying lonely cat.

Here's a link to the comics (the series runs from Oct. 23rd 1989-Oct. 28th, so... there's the dates for selecting the comics)
http://www.garfield.com/comics/comics_archives_strip.html?1989-ga891023

or you can go to the emo'd up ytmnd version of it, complete with a sountrack and the original black and white comics (black and white, so it can be even more depressing! Huzzah!):

And here's a link to some other discussions on the whole thing:

So anyways, my friend's theory (I think, it might have been the other dude's theory, dammit, it was somebody's theory in that conversation) is that this whole time Garfield has been alone in an abandoned house, dying of starvation, and spending his last days in a hallucination containing Jon and Odie.

I'm not entirely sure what I think of the whole thing. I HIGHLY doubt the aforementioned idea was what Jim Davis had in mind when he started the strip. The only conclusion I have is that Jim Davis was really depressed and lonely, and thus made a comic strip to reflect his mood (similar to what Rob Schrab did with the final issue of Scud: The Disposable Assassin).

Either way, there you all go. You can all be depressed with me now.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a livejournal account to create...
Current Mood: I want to die.
Currently listening to: My tears hitting the keyboard
*Sorry, I have to inject some humor into this. As this really is a depressing thing to think about*

I was a huge Garfield fan as a kid. The comics, the bed spread, the lunch box. To think that this might be the real deal is strange. Yet oddly I could see it as fitting. In the end though I still have my love of the comic series and that won't ever change.
