"HD DVD players posted a more successful launch than its Blu-ray rival, at least in terms of the number of players sold. Home Media Retailing quotes an NPD study that found that HD DVD player outsold Blu-ray players by 33% during their first six weeks after launch. HD DVD sales began in April, while Blu-ray players followed in June; the only Blu-ray play currently offered is Samsung's $1000 BD-P1000, while HD DVD players are offered from multiple vendors for prices as low as $450.

The higher price allowed Samsung alone to capture higher revenues that all HD DVD player manufacturers combined. According to NPD, the BD-P1000 achieved 42% more revenue than HD DVD players during their first six weeks.

Overall high-def players are still playing an insignificant role of all disc player sales in the market. NPD said that HD DVD and Blu-ray players accounted for only 0.4% of all disc player sales. DVD players came in at 86.2%, DVD recorders at 13.4%."

Samsung must be way overcharging people if they are making 42% more money on 33% less sales.

Yeah, this is true. But you can't really blame Samsung. They are the reason Blu-ray has been able to launch when it should have been Sony putting out the first player (which would have died in a month or two). I'd charge like mad too if I were Samsung, then lower the price when other players came out... not really their battle to ensure the success of Blu-ray. They always have the option of making some HD-DVD players too.

It does suck for the early adopters though. Then again anyone who buys any of these shit players is nuts. The reviews have been very harsh for both camps players. I am really looking forward to the XBOX360's add-on. I would never use a gaming consoles disk drive to watch movies for fear after going through 2 PS2's due to disk read errors. I can't believe that people are planning to play movies on their PS3's, no way would I do that. I will use the XBOX360 add-on until stand alone players come way down in price. Once a good quality player releases for $200 it will be mine.

Funny thing is I have never owned a stand alone DVD player. My first was my original xbox I bought in 2001 and I have logged several hundred hours of movie watching on that system alone not to mention gamne time which is probably triple that or more and it is still humming along just fine.

I also use my 360 in the same way. I do want to get a nice 5-disc DVD changer with component outputs. But alas I am poor and will have to settle for using my game consoles.
