View Full Version : Always fun returning to your roots
Part of the reason I've been off of Xbox Live as of late has been because of my new Saturn bringing me back to my beloved Saturn collection. Its always fun taking a few months off from a system and then returning to it only to be reminded of just how damn much you love it. I swear, Radiant Silvergun, NiGHTS, Batsugun, Hyper Duel, Taromaru, and Blast Wind are the most sublime experiences I can have as far as gaming goes!
Anyways, when you guys "return to your roots" what all do you play? Any fun stories?
For me:
Tonight I was playing some Batsugun Special and I made it to the 4th boss on my 1st credit. Typically if I haven't played it in awhile Batsugun eats me up in level 4 (holy shit the boss is crazy hard!) but for some odd reason I breezed through the level and WOULD HAVE beaten the boss if I had remembered to take out the homing lasers first. :E Oy... its a bad thing when you destroy the main forward lasers and then those things start going off.
Prolly going to make a Blast Wind run in a second here followed by a Taromaru run. I don't even think about it when I play through those... so they're very calming experiences for me. :)

My story isn't really a fun one. Mine is how I have abused my DC, Saturn Master System and Genesis for a long time now. Living at home (parent's home) makes space around for systems hard to come by. My Saturn is stranded without a TV, The DC is just about inaccessible where it's sitting, the SMS is in a closet all bagged up with the games, and the Genesis is hangin out with the SMS.
I'm just so damn lazy I can't bring myself to rearrange anything to make room. I'm also holdin back from buyin a new TV so I can skip the agony of having to move it out with me when I get my own place.
Back in the happy zone, I enjoy playing a good game of Guardian Heroes (when the Saturn is hooked up). Doesn't matter which routes I take, I enjoy it a lot. It's pretty much a game done the way every Dragon Ball Z game should have been made.
On the DC side, I like to play some SA or SA2 Sonic levels once in awhile. great level design, good times.
For the SMS, I love to play Wonderboy III and get Piranha-man. He was always my favorite character. I hate the passcode system, but it works, so I'll take it.
Choplifter and Action Fighter always bring back some good memories, too. I still haven't beaten Choplifter and Action Fighter is tough as hell. Still a great time though.
I gotta get these systems hooked back up.
O shit, Astal. I love to play through Astal every once in awhile. One of my favorite Saturn games.

I always find myself coming back to Street Fighter III: Third Strike when I haven't played Dreamcast for a while. It's a great way for me to get back into the console. I have my back-up Dreamcast hooked up via VGA to an old monitor with an arcade stick just for arcade games. My other Dreamcast is for normal-controller games, and it's connected via RGB-SCART to my HDTV (the VGA input is being used by my laptop).
I also seem to start with arcadey games when coming back to a console, like with Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair on Mega Drive, Power Strike II on Master System, Wonderboy on GameGear or Dynamite Deka on Saturn.
Power Strike II! :drooling:

Considering I make it a point to visit my "roots" every year, there are actually quite a few games that make the list!
First up, Space Harrier for Master System! :x I actually play this and the arcade version (usually in some compilation since my machine is not working at the moment :| ) quite a bit... so I guess I never really "left" my roots to revisit them on these games! :p
One game that I do come back to annually is Miracle Warriors for Master System! I never beat the game, but I come back to it every year to trek a little further than I was the year before! This was great fun until my battery gave out and I had to start all over! :( Oh well... What can you do? START OVER AND DO IT ALL AGAIN!!! :D I've played this every Labor Day since I got the game, so Labor Day is my holiday of choice to celebrate Miracle Warriors!
I also consider the original Mortal Kombat a major part of my "roots!" I play that on Genesis/Game Gear every year on Mortal Monday (September 13th). I go all out for Mortal Kombat though, so I make a day of JUST Mortal Kombat! :56.9hart43:
Then there are all the random games that I go back to periodically, but not in any dedicated fashion like the previously mentioned 3! Games like Alex Kidd, Wonder Boy, After Burner, Shinobi 3, Streets of Rage 2, Wonder Dog, Eternal Champions, and COUNTLESS others fit into this list... And I typically enjoy playing most of these more than I do the current stuff! It's just easier for me to get into the classics when I don't have time to dedicate to longer games of the current gen lineup! ARCADE GAMER FOR LIFE! :p

I was gonna get one of those a couple years ago, but I changed my mind for some reason. How big are they? Are they easy to hang on a wall?
Hawk, how easy is it to change the battery in Miracle Warriors? It's pretty amazing how these cart batteries can last 2 decades. :SM11

Hanging it is only a problem because of the power cord. They've very short and do not fit snuggly into the socket....they kinda just fall out, which sucks.
Other than that, they look pretty great (a few rough cuts in the acrylic, nothing too bad) and come with a chain to hang them on, which seems strong enough to last if you can get the cord to stay in the socket. Also, there is no on/off switch. When it's plugged in it's on and when the plug comes out it's off.
I believe this one is 12 x 9 inches and the other is 15 x 8.5 inches. Decent size. So the one displayed here is roughly the size of a pad of standard notebook paper (11 x 8.5 in/27.9 x 21.5 cm), college ruled (I'm assuming the notepads are about the same size in the UK, but I have no idea.....if the notepad comparison means crap to you, I think it's a little wider than a Saturn and about as long.
And speaking of returning to my roots, I'm playing through Sword of Vermillion again. I really like the game. It was a nice mix of action adventure and RPG. Quality graphics and music/sounds, as well.
