TV is fixed. Both A and D board had chips that were replaced. D boards were the bad ones, but according to the tech, these boards are ticking time bombs and will need to be replaced at some point. We had him replace both.

So Luminous......if your TV goes back as far as mine (model KV-34XBR910), you might consider upping the warranty or getting the replacement boards for the A and D board. This tech told me that Sony knew about the problem and started using these new chips in all the TV's since.

All told, it cost us a little less than $250 for the repair. Better than a new TV , in my opinion. HD is back, baby.

I know mine is a newer model (bought it in 2005), but I keep forgetting to check on the exact model number. Hopefully I won't have an issue, but I still might try to extend the warranty. So if my TV does die and they can't fix it I will get the original purchase price back and that will get me real close to a nice big 1080p TV. :D

Thanks for the info!

Another all-nighter for no apparent reason....

The last time I did sleep, though, I had a pretty trippy dream. Well... I won't go into the story, but one part in particular was really interesting to me. At the end of it I had to jump into a lake to get into this underwater cave, so I dove down from this cliff, and as soon as I hit the water I went through this whole slow-motion sequence... sunlight was streaming down into the lake, and these fish and flowers and stuff were floating all around me and this music was playing that was reminiscent of the ending credit music in Rez... just this really relaxing music like 'tranquility at last'... but I can't remember any other dream I had where I actually heard music like this... it was so fucking vivid, I can still just about remember how it went.

Usually something like that (music) in a dream would just be sort've abstract-- in my sensory background, so to speak. This was like completely enveloping me. It seemed really unique.

Anyways, that's all.

MAD.MANTIS
08-23-2008, 11:06 AM
Wow, sounds like you had an out of body experience. :O

I rarely remember my dreams. When I do, they usually involve me moving into a haunted mansion on some cliff. Why I have this recurring dream, I dunno. I'm sick of it tho.

I'm tired. Its 1AM. I'm about to go to bed.

Oy. I have a Fourier Analysis exam this week. Half of it is a take home part we have to do using computer software, so eh, that'll be easy enough. The rest is just... going to be lame. Fourier series and then a little bit of complex analysis (which is REALLY funny to me since I'm taking ACTUAL complex analysis, so all the dinky rink stuff we do in Fourier is shit I'm having to derive in Complex,), then some dumb shit with graphics and piece-wise smooth and continuous and rah rah.

Not really digging that class. Its engineer math, and engineer math is lame. Anyone can do engineer math. You don't have to actually THINK about engineer math. I want to hurry up and get in grad school already so I can be working with theoretical stuff. Thats where the fun is.

Speaking of which, I got my first exams in Foundations of Math and Complex Analysis back.

Foundations was awesome. There was a problem on the test he hadn't "sufficiently covered", so he decided to let it be a take home problem instead after the fact. Of course, I did it on the test (AND the bonus) so... I don't have to do that. And I gots a 99 on that bitch. Whut!

Complex Analysis made me sad though. I mean, yes, half the class (8 people, now 4) dropped because of the first test, and yes, I had the highest grade in the class, but fuck an 87. Fuck. that. It was carelessness too that caused it... but still. Still, it SHOULD have been a 90.5 because he originally took off .5 for some careless mistake, and then went back and changed that .5 to 4! So lame... so lame.

But whatever, in most upper level math a 60 is a B. So... I still got an A. Just not a dope A with a 90+. :frown:

But the Complex Analysis got sadistic today. We hit power series. I hated series and sequences. Hated them. Or rather, I hate the way they get presented. Convergence and divergence... bah!

But... Thursday... we're hitting Lebesque integration. I was unaware we would be covering that. Its not listed in the class description... and uh... if you're going to cover the REAL version of integration (as opposed to Riemann's integration, which is what everyone learns), you would think it would be in the class notes.

But no... Thursday is Lebesque integration. Thats kind of scary. I was told by my Fourier professor that only like, 1 out of 100 mathematicians ever has to see Lebesque integration. Like, Riemann's shortcomings are mostly applicable in OTHER spaces, it works fairly well in the really-real world, but starts to fall apart elsewhere. Lebesque integration works EVERYWHERE and is a bit more accurate from what I understand.

So... that will be interesting.

I'm going to bed.

Long day. Ha, spent a lot of time on ole' Raiden IV. Nice game.

Outside of that, school is awesome. Like, my professor for Complex Analysis and Foundations of Math is so fucking cool, and is pretty open anymore about me being his star student (well, to me). Its really surreal when a professor disses the other students in your class to you when no one else is around (and does so only while he's ragging you for missing something obvious and answering a problem TOO hardcore, haha!)

Basically, I needed to analyze the differentiation and convergence of a power series in the complex plane. So I went all out and described its disk of convergence, found the radius for said disk, applied the theorems for power series, etc. etc. What did he want? Just for me to compare it to a geometrical series and take its limit. Oh well.

Outside of that... my life is weird. Some stuff has gone down and... I really don't know what to make of it. Its either a very good thing or the build up for a very horrible thing, and I hate it when I can't apply logic to figure out what the probable outcome will be.

Its a weird situation. With other weird situations converging to it. And I have no fucking clue who to talk to all this nonsense about. So for the time being, guess I'll just enjoy the ride until I see a cliff at the end of the road, and then I shall bail out.

Meengya, man. Uncertainty definitely sucks. The good thing is that you've always known where you wanted to go, anyway, so no matter what comes up in the meantime, you always have your original goals to get to.

Bed time for me, too. I gotta get out tomorrow and maybe buy some really flaming shirts for my cruise. I guess there are two formal nights and I wanna get some bright and faggy
(no offense to all you faggots here, of course) colors to wear with my drab grey suit. Not looking to spend a whole lot, either. See ya later nitz

Sorry......I'm here. I was playing the latest Prince of Persia and wanted to take a little break. i love the revived series, but I think a 9.3 was an overrate on IGN's part (fuck that idiot Hilary). It's a very pretty game but it really isn't doing a whole lot more than the other games. So far, I'd give it a solid 8.5. Looks great, sounds great, has great voice acting, plays pretty good (there are far more misjumps and unplanned falls than hilary noted) and doesn't feel too repetitive. If you liked the others in Ubisofts series, you'll like this, but don't expect to have your mind blown.

Thanks man!

Here's the lyrics if ya want 'em:
Verse 1 (Dank):
Presents are the kids and the kids are the presents
See ya gotta go and tear them up like heretic peasants
Gotta take 'em and break 'em and fuckin' glue 'em and make 'em
Stuff 'em all full of toys even all in the limb
Man put 'em by the tree with the girls and boys
Oh shit, what was that, bitch what's that noise
They're screaming and crying and crawling in pain
But stop motherfucker! That's the big wheel lane!!!
My wife's a blue package with a little red bow
Little Susie is a gift bag but she's got room to grow
And Jack's a green package always covered in blood
When he jumps at his gifts man it all starts to flood
I woke up in the morning but the gifts are gone!
Motherfucker look at that they're crawling in the lawn!!!
Got the kids to round 'em up, hit the wife for some lovin'
While the kids fed the trash to the Easy Bake Oven!

Chorus:
Its tots for toys, so what could go wrong?
Come on sing along to your favorite song!
What what?
Dank what in the fuck are you talkin' about man?
What? What?
You need to be stickin' to the original fuckin' plan!

Verse 2 (Inferis):
Shhh! Listen to the silence/
Its my second Christmas trapped inside of the asylum/
They locked us up in '06 for spreading our Christmas cheer/
Now its 2008 and we're gettin' the fuck up outta here/
Shit, up on the rooftop I keep hearing all these clicks/
Seems like the lunatics is gettin' a visit from Saint Nick/
So I, just chill, awaitin' for this fucker to come around/
'But Dank goes down, back, high punch disappearing into the ground/
Then Dank pops into Santa with an uppercut blow/
Santa falls across our cell and I'm grab him by his throat/
So take my Christmas cutter and put a slit into his neck/
Now Santa's white beard is my favorite shade of red/
Dear Dead Santa all I want is to be free/
So I reach into his jacket and I get the prison keys/
Then Dank and I jack his fuckin' sleigh for a ride/
Merry Christmas to all now you're all gonna die!/

verse 3:
Dank:
Santa Dank's back yall and we're comin' to town
Bitches best unlock your doors or we gonna kick it down
Don't want property damage as a result of blocking me
I mean afterall it's not very Christmasy
Let me in, let it begin, trust me, it's my grin
Like my Santa suit? Good, man I made it out of skin
Here's a severed limb and a fuckin' ginger bread cookie
Now show me to your mom cuz I gotta get some nookie!

Inferis:
While Dank was stuffin' ya Mom's muffin', I snuck in/
And I left a couple of presents in ya muthafuckin' oven/
Something about highly flammable keep away from open flames/
But ya house was kinda chilly so I'm thinkin' I saved the day/
I turned the oven up and crept the fuck outside/
Yo Dank quit fuckin' that slut unless you really wanna die/
So we're chillin' on the lawn watchin' pretty Christmas lights/
Loving the music that is screams from the family locked inside/

And Gehenna-Os is going to be the shit!!!!!! Yeeeeeeeeesssssssssssss!!!!!! I'm glad thats finally announced, I've been piecing stuff together for it for a year now in my head. =D

Well, I finally went ahead and ordered parts for a PC and got it built today with my buddy. One hitch on the build, but it's all together and working fast as shit.....did some pretty solid 3D Mark scores, too. Now I just need to find somewhere to set this fucker up. Need to buy a new monitor, too.

Had another interview a couple hours ago. Job seems pretty decent. I should be getting a face-to-face interview scheduled in the next few days, so this might be promising. Not getting ahead of myself, but one of the first things they asked me was for my salary requirements.....if I do end up getting an offer after interviewing with them, they'd better not dip below the range I gave them. That happened to me last year and it blew my mind. Why ask for a range if you don't plan on hitting it? Negotiation is one thing, but completely low balling and saying "that's the best we can do" is another. Let me know ahead of time and I can save us all the trouble of these forced social interactions.

Well, didn't get the job.....guess the face-to-face didn't go so well....ahhh, back to the job hunt.

Well, another job applied, interviewed and denied, haha. I'm fairly certain I lost this one because of my salary requirements. The only time when I thought things weren't going great was when they asked what I wanted on the phone screening. I told the HR woman, she hesitated a moment ( I expected her to say "that's a little out of our range") and then said they could probably work that out. My face-to-face went as good as those can go and I was even asked if I could come back in this past week for a second interview. They never scheduled the interview and sent me the shitty-ass canned "thanks, you have a lot of good shit but other applicants had shit that fit our needs better, we are going to file your resume" response. I'm gonna call or e-mail this cunt and ask her if she can just level with me like a human being and give me the real reason why I was passed on. I could have done this job with my head screwed on backwards. It HAS to be because of the money I asked for. If that's the case, though, I'm pissed that they even had me in to waste my time.

Back to absolutely no good prospects and applying for more shitty jobs.

Sorry to hear that Bru. A good friend of mine just got back to work after 2 years without a job. So I can at least appreciate what you are going through to an extent.

Keep plugging away.

Yup, nothing else to do but keep on applying.

I've been out for nearly 2 years, but the first 6 - 9 months was all my fault. I was lazier than anyone ever should be about getting a job. Unfortunately, that's right about when the job market went from bad to worse. I'm trying my balls off now, though. I have to get going on making my own life, whatever sad life that may be, haha.

Well, same job I applied to, interviewed at and then got denied, recently re-interviewed and offered me a job. I'm not making as much as I was at my last place, but I haven't worked in over 2 years, so I gotta get back into it. The best part is that it's only a 10 minute ride from me. I've never had any job that was within 6 miles and 10 minutes of driving.

I would love a commute of even 20 minutes.

Thanks man and I hear ya. My whole life, whether it has been school, work or hanging out with friends, has always been a 20 mile/30 minute drive minimum. Never had something this close to home. When I move out, I plan on staying in Southern NH, so it should still be a fairly short drive to work if and when I get out of here.

congrats on the job Bruhaha.

I'm in the process of applying to a job I feel really good amount. I've networked a lot with the company and hopefully it leads to an interview.

One of my friends just got a job at Yelp doing data entry and said some people recently quit and there are more openings. I want to apply because the job sounds sweet and easy, and it pays much better than my current job...

But it's full time or at least requires a minimum of 30 hours a week and I don't know if I can really handle 3 10+ hour days when I'm still in school. :frown:

It's a long commute to San Francisco too.

Evening Sestren. I forgot to post this, but I received a nasty surprise at work this week. Our IT department is on a blocking spree lately so now I can view Sestren, but can't post from work. :|

Anyway I am just relaxing and watching some NHL highlights. I do love having the NHL network in HD. :D

Damn, we're going to have find a workaround for that. Maybe if you use some sort of proxy site.

It's really annoying. I know it is pushing me to get a good internet capable phone next time I am due for one. :| It's not just Sestren, they are blocking sites I had no problem getting to just a couple of weeks ago.

6:30pm is night by current standards, dark as shit!

I am coding away, my current project is getting close to 1.0 status.

I also ran a 5k today and PR'ed (runner's speak for beat my previous best) so I'm quite stoked about that.

What's up Sestren?

Yay!!!! Night time thread.

Hey Moriya, do you know many people who use UML or work as software developers? I'm getting a math masters degree, but I'm taking a course in UML at the moment and I'm really loving it. I'm not as big into coding (i.e. I don't like wasting my nights away chasing dangling pointers :p), but I love the software design aspect, which has had me wondering if you can be a software designer or something that doesn't spend much time coding.

Moriya

UML is really old fashioned and even largely considered to be obsolete. You'll still find it being used in some really conservative shops like military contractors, financial markets, etc. But for the most part it's largely shunned. It's been replaced with "agile" which is basically an umbrella term for "have processes that allow you to adapt quickly and easily, so you don't have to do much, if any, upfront design." There are many ways to accomplish agile, like XP, kanban, scrum, etc.

UML is mostly associated with the waterfall process, which is a huge upfront design session that puts out requirement docs, then a huge coding session where the developers attempt to meet those requirements, a huge testing phase where testers assert the requirements were met or not, and finally a release phase where mostly developers hate life and write documentation and abstracts about the software. I worked at a job that required this and it was brutal :) Agile is much more about small cycles of a tiny smidge of design, a bit of coding, and testing, repeated often and quickly. The ideas is that stake holders can change their minds just about whenever they want and adapt the software to meet actual needs instead of estimated or assumed needs.

Hate to burst your bubble if you're enjoying UML. But sadly in most of the industry you'll find it completely ignored now. I last used UML about a decade ago.

Damn... I guess they hammer on it so much here because I live in a military town. Every CS class I've had has preached the waterfall design and how it's virtually required for government contract work.

Moriya
11-20-2011, 03:32 PM
Yeah government contract work is often waterfall because the government places such strict requirements on everything. But even that is changing. There are efforts to try and become more agile from within the confines of the government.

It's also hard to truly design software without a lot of experience writing software. Again not trying to disappoint you, just being honest. There is demand out there for software architects and software design. Those are generally tough jobs to get (and pay major bucks, at the cost of major stress) because a given company might have 50 developers and 1 or 2 architects (that's about the ratio at my company)

Moriya

If you ever want any advice or whatever about the software dev business, give me a hollar. I've worked for companies with 8 people up to one of the largest software companies in the world and everything in between. It's a great industry over all. And generally speaking when making new hires, people with math degrees are quite desirable.

11-21-2011, 07:35 PM
Thanks man! I appreciate it.

You know, I don't really know what I'm going to do once I finish up the ole' MS in math. Ideally I would've loved to have been a professor of mathematics, but I dicked around too much as an undergrad and now I'm almost 30, so fighting for tenure at 40 just doesn't sound like it would be much fun (that, and I'd have to go to a different school as no one at mine does research in my favorite field, I'm a pure mathematician at an applied math school!)

I was digging the idea of being a software designer, but after reading your posts I'm not so sure. I enjoy the software development aspect (what has been taught to me as doing the requirements document, the models, etc.), but if that's going out the window and folks want people that do that and want to sit around doing code I'm not so sure. I was really big into programming back in high school, but these days I go nuts trying to chase down dangling pointers and finding out at 3AM that I accidentally typed in the wrong variable at one spot in hundreds of lines of code and that my program is crashing because of that. I mean, I can do it, I just don't think that I want to.

Ah well. I think I'll take some Simulation and Modeling classes next year. I'm trying to well-round myself in grad school so I can have some solid options if doing cryptanalysis with the government doesn't pan out (which at this point is my primary goal, so my math course work is being tailored towards that despite there being no cryptography courses at my school).
