Since most here are pretty big Sega fans...what was it that made you or cause to like sega? I'd have to say back in the day seeing sonic, which was completely different than Mario, bring some new attitude to video gaming. Not to mention the great sega arcade gaming which a few are still some of my all time favorite games of all time (outrun, space harrier) There is also just a kind of fun rooting and supporting the underdog of Sega (of coarse Sega now is just some average publisher/developer :()
I liked Sega back in the Master System and Genesis days. I can't say I preferred them over Nintendo back then as I was a Square whore, but I liked them. I also passively liked the Sega CD and 32X.
But once the Saturn came about it was over.

I just got all the consoles even back then. Once I got my Genesis I feel in love with it and that is when I became a Sega fan, which I no longer consider myself.

The Genesis.....seeing Sonic and the speed in which he moved.
Honestly another big draw for me was the way EA's sports games played on the system :SM4 NHL and Madden played better on the Genesis than the SNES.

Well, for me, it was the Dreamcast...the only Sega system I had before that was the Gamegear, which I dident hang onto very long. Just everything the Dreamcast was and did, and all those games, all of that put together with many things made me to like sega.

I hated mario, I never liked a slow ass fat plumber. I hated Zelda, it was just so boring to me. I had no interest in the master system either. Then my bro bought a Genesis, we played Sonic, and the rest was history.

It was my brother, when he bought the Master System and some games. I didn't have anything against Mario and crew, but Sega was the household name.
I'll admit that a little rivalry sparked with the whole SMS Double Dragon being 2 player co-op and the NES Double Dragon 1 not being (though it was still a cool version)

You know, it's a funny story actually! :p I was actually a Sega fan before I even knew I was a Sega fan! I was lucky enough to be born at just the right time! When I was born, Pong was about all that was out, and arcades were where people would go to play the REALLY cool games! So when I was quite a young kid, the arcade ruled, and consoles began their life as the videogame for homes! Most people had an Atari 2600, others had Colecovision or Intellivision... but my family only had Pong! Luckily, one of my cousins favorite things to do was go to the local arcade! He and my aunt would make it a regular thing to take me and my brothers to the arcade with them, and of course my parents would also take us on occasion! I really grew up in the arcade scene playing classic games from the late 70's/early 80's! Various friends and family had the home consoles that our family just couldn't afford, so I also got to experience the whole home gaming as well... just not as much as I got to play arcade games! In the arcades, I didn't even think about anything like a system wars (this company is better than the other)! It was all about the games to me! I liked some games better than others, but I didn't think anything about it other than it's what I wanted to spend my quarters on. Also, since the arcades were so packed, I'd experiment with lots of games, because many times, the games I wanted to play were already occupied! Here's the funny part... I remember playing TONS of games back then! They varied from Atari, to Nintendo and definitely Sega! My favorite Sega arcade games back then were Periscope, Turbo and as the 80's progressed, Quartet and After Burner! But, at the time, I didn't even associate Sega with these games, I just knew I liked them!
As for my time spent at my friends and family's houses with consoles, I played myself TONS of this game called Carnival! It's probably my oldest home Sega experience! It, along with Pitfall, Cosmic Avenger, Venture and Combat were my favorite pre-8-bit era games.
Well, I would BEG and BEG for a Colecovision or an Atari, but my parents would always decline. They knew how much I enjoyed going to the arcades, and how I would spend every waking moment on a game console when I was somewhere that had one... Not to mention, I played Pong so much that our T.V. got burn in :5scofla124843: (coolest damn icon ever!!! )! Well, the 8-bit era hit, and the NES started off strong! I played it, and of course loved it! It was SO much more like the arcade games I grew up playing! Of course, a little after that, the Sega Master System was released, and their first Christmas in competition with each other, Siskel and Ebert had a change of pace from their normal movie critiques! On the day my Mom and I were putting up our Christmas tree, they decided to review the NES vs. the Master System! I was fascinated just to get to see more games that I had never played showing on my T.V. This was the first time I had really seen a Master System in play though, and both Siskel and Ebert really took a liking to the system when compared to the NES!
"You know, I can trace the entire path of my life to one childhood memory... My last clear memory really!" :SM14
Anyway, I can PINPOINT the moment in time I became a "Sega fan." On the show, they decided to show off the different 3-D capabilities of each system! WHOA!!! Now that's something new! For the NES, they got out their flimsy paper 3-D glasses and played Rad Racer in 3-D. It was OK, but nothing that great (this also was my first NES game... but that's another story)! Then, they put on those awesome Sega 3-D glasses and popped in Missile Defense 3-D! I WAS FLOORED! I seriously remember my jaw just hitting the floor while watching that! It was by far the coolest thing I had ever seen!
Well, at the end of the show, my Mom asked me, "If I could only have one of those, which one would I want?" After seeing Missile Defense, the cool 3-D glasses, and also tons of the arcade games that I grew up loving, my response could only be, "The Sega!"
That Christmas my brothers and I got our first real console, The Sega Master System! We spent HOURS playing Hang-On and Safari Hunt, and the day after Christmas my Dad took us to Sears and we each got one game a piece. I got Wonder Boy, my middle brother Alex Kidd in Miracle World, and my youngest brother picked Shooting Gallery! I had played the best of the NES at the time, and I still wanted one (and got one the next year)... but I always thought the Sega Master System was better than MOST of the NES stuff! I was lucky enough to grow up fairly unbiased and enjoyed ALL games... and it wasn't until the kids at school would make fun of me for having a Sega Master System that I really even knew anything about a console war! It's been a crazy ride since then, but I've been a Sega fan my whole life! I'm not saying that I would always choose Sega over another company (see HawkClay's 16-bit era history for more info :p ), but I have ALWAYS been a big Sega fan! :56.9hart43:

:O Welcome Hawk! Good Story!
It's funny because only in recent years when I went back to the arcade did I realize that a lot of the old games I used to love were in fact SEGA games.
My favorite Arcade game of all time is probably Initial D. A SEGA Game of course.

heh, nice story hawk. You know it probably took me awhile to realize all those games playing as a kid and over at friends house were all by sega. You don't really think about that stuff when your a kid, just the gaming.

That's just it! The initial unbiased opinion of a child is an amazing thing! Back then, it was all about gaming, and it's something that I have definitely tried to continue to remember throughout the years... but with all the bickering between various console owners feeling they need to justify their decision in buying a specific console and putting down everything else, it's kind of hard to avoid getting in an argument over things every now and then with gamers. *sigh* Such is the nature of the industry! You can't enjoy a game if it's not on your console of choice! :~

My cousin got me involved in Sega. I use to be a die hard NES junkie then my cousin got a Genesis and he preached about how great the Genesis was and it was faster than the SNES. It was one of the rare times that something like that didn;t just go in one ear and out the other.

I grew up on the Pre-arcade video game days, Atari/Midway/Sega among others, back in the days of Bowling alleys, bars, or a Space Invaders cab and maybe a Star Castle cab stuck in a corner at a Deli ect..
I guess my really first Sega game that hooked me was Zaxxon, After Burner and Space Harrier! There was nothing like these Bad-Boyz at the time, people were really still playing Pac-Man/Ms, Donkey Kong and Duck Hunt the most as I recall.
I never had the cash for 8bitt consoles, NES nor a Master system at that age, besides, a few quaters and it was on at the arcades.

For me it was my uncle. One Christmas he bought me and my cousins the Master System. I think I was 5. Sega arcade games, Alex Kidd, 3D glasses....plus it looked fucking awesome. It reminded me of something out of the future with the little light dislay for power on there. Too bad the damn reset and pause button were so close.

CJG, you just saved me from typing my reasons. I used to love playing NHL, Madden, NBA Live, Sonic all on the Genesis. From that point on i was pretty much owned. then when PSO came out for the DC, i was really owned.

I've taken the SEGA path ever since the first time I saw the Alex Kidd in Miracle World title screen appear when I turned on my very first console without even inserting a cart :SM11

I did forget to post about my favorite arcade game of all time....before I really knew what Sega was all about. That was After Burner in the full size cabinet of course. I used to lvoe that game, along with Outrun and Space Harrier. Back then I never really paid attention to game developers, but I knew I liked those games.

My Parent's got me the Sega Genesis 2 for Christmas when I was but six years old. I thought it was cooler than my best friend's SNES, so I never bothered to buy anything but Genesis games. I eventually got a Gameboy Color, which, combined with Pokémon Silver, consumed my life, but I've never stopped playing my Genesis. I bought a Dreamcast off of nightc1 last summer, and I've continued to buy Sega-developed games for my DS, GCN, and Wii, just to show my support and love.
