Anybody have the complete collection? The only games I have are the ones on the PS2 classic collection and the Treasure Box disc.
Has anyone tried/purchased the rest?
I know just about zero Japanese, but I'd love to play Phantasy Star and see how that turned out.
Also curious about how Decalthlete, VF2, Phantasy Star 2, Fighting Vipers, Dynamite Deka and Panzer Dragoon turned out.
A lot of the Ages games haven't been too great so I'm trying to get a bit of feedback before I go nutty on the ordering. It looks like there's some other cool ones coming down the road, I just hope they load em with extras. Any info is appreciated.
Its my understanding that the ones handled by D3 weren't all that great... but the newer ones have been done very well.
Granted, I don't know where D3's involvement ends so...

Man, i almost considered getting a PS2 for the Phantasy Star ones, I REALLY want them. :( Does anyone know of a good PS2 emulator? I will buy the discs, but I need an emulator that will play them so I don't have to buy a crappy PS2.

I have never owned a Sony console and refuse to now. Damn, stupid illegal software enablers! WHERE IS MY PS2 EMULATOR?! Stupid fucking SEGA needs to get those on XBLA. My faith would be fully resotred in SEGA if they did that for me. PSIV Remake on XBLA = Xbox 360 GREATEST CONSOLE EVER!!
For those of you who don't yet know.
Phantasy Star IV = My Favorite Game of ALL TIME

Phantasy Star IV is a great game. Quality all around. A little easy, but the battles were so fun, it didn't matter. Definitely one of my favorite games and definitely one of my favorite RPG's. Ahhhh, the Sega of old

I have most of the series. I have everything up until Sega took over, and a few after that. I'm planning on picking up the rest of them, but I had to hold out for some time due to the wedding and stuff.
Honestly, I'd rather have 3-D Ages doing it again. Sure, they were cheap and definitely didn't utilize all the power of the system, but they were different while staying true to their roots! Kind of a cheap Super Mario All-Stars kind of thing. With Sega taking over, they are just ports of games that I already own on their respective systems. Space Harrier collection is cool because it has practically EVERY version of Space Harrier ever made (Space Harrier 3-D included :D )... Quartet/SDI rocks because it has the arcade version of Quartet 2 ( :SM19 @ not having the original 4 player version though ). I can see why, but still it upsets me. Having the arcade versions of games I don't own ROCKS... but games that are simply perfect ports of Genesis/Saturn games, I probably already own! :( That maybe cool for someone who isn't a collector, or someone who "had" to sell off their old collection or whatever... but to me, I'd rather have something a little new, even if it feels more like a glorified PlayStation game! I figure I still have fun with 32-bit era games, and they look worse than Sega Ages titles for the most part. Sure, they weren't quite as aesthetically pleasing as the big budget titles, but the gameplay on practically every one of them held true to it's roots... and sometimes adding a few things to the mix for the sake of change (which I LOVED)!
Take Space Harrier for example! I've played the original arcade/Master System version literally THOUSANDS of times! Not only that, I still play it quite frequently whenever I feel like it... With the Sega Ages one, they made Space Harrier, but they changed the look to give it a darker image (and some cool 3-D terrain), and also added new power ups like rapid fire, lock-on lasers and bombs! Not only that, but REAL fans of Space Harrier, if they are REALLY good at the game... They are in for a REALLY cool suprise in this remake!!! Seriously, I just about cried when I got "my surprise!" :56.9hart43: It felt like it was a tribute to the fans of the series, made by some guys who wanted to do a lot, but could only feasably do so much.
Sadly, the modern gamer of course is going to badmouth every game in this series just because they "look bad" (look dated is a better way to say it), or they don't offer 80+ hours of gameplay (Phantasy Star excluded). It upsets me that kids these days don't know what REAL arcade gameplay is all about! They don't understand the value of REPLAY VALUE! Just because a game only has 20 levels and can be beaten in an hour, that's all the more reason for me to play it multiple times if I enjoyed playing it... Unlike an 80+ hour game that I'll NEVER replay because if I have 80+ hours to blow on a game, then I'm much more likely to spend that on something I've never played before!
Now, not all the games in the series turned out as well as others... Golden Axe feels a bit weak, but it's still enjoyable enough... The faces crack me up! :^O Phantasy Star is text HEAVY, so I didn't really get to play through that one... but it sure looked cool! I wish the whole Phantasy Star compliation would have come out over here! :(
The sad thing is, since 3-D Ages stopped remaking these classsics, I fear some that I was REALLY looking forward to like Alex Kidd are never going to make it out now! If it does come out, then we'll probably just get a compilation disc of all the Alex Kidd games! :| Whopee. I didn't just play through every Alex Kidd game in the series this last month. An Alex Kidd remake would have probably been my only hope for a NEW Alex Kidd game in the series... and I'm afraid I'll never see it now! :(

Stupid SEGA. I really wish they had been released here, I had found a PS2 emulator that worked, but the games are all in moonspeak, so I am screwed. :(

Sega is already sleeping with Sony so I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Thanks for the lowdown on the Ages games. Phantasy Star looked like a really quality remake, so I was praying and hoping for that to get localized. The games on the Sega Classic collection were cool. Now that you say Space Harrier has a special surprise, I may have to put some more time into it.
I also thought Outrun was a great remake, but kinda lost playtime to Outrun 2 on the Xbox. Fantasy Star was also good except for the very bad screen scrolling. It was too far behind Opa-Opa

Bruha, I got the "suprise" when I beat the game on one life on the hardest difficulty making sure to beat EVERY boss before they "ran away!" I'm not sure what combination of events actually unlocks this secret, but no matter what the case, I was probably one of the first to discover it since I put that game on overnight shipping along with a Japanese PS2 so I could play the game!!! :SM14 I'm a Space Harrier NUT! :p
*NP Sega AGES Space Harrier - Main Theme*
Nice! ;)
I also wanted to add that I ordered the rest of the series that I was currently missing... So anything after Treasure Box pretty much. I don't remember what Dreamcast game I pre-ordered when I ordered them (either Trigger Heart LE, Crows or Last Hope). So, I could be getting them REALLY soon, next month, or in two months! :p
Also, in March they are releasing Monster World Collection! I REALLY hope it includes the arcade shooter!!! :56.9hart43:

Nice. You'll have to write us up a complete Sega Ages library review. Either that or just give us a list to buy and a list to avoid.I'm still waiting for our Alex Kidd ages. Better not be a straight port

Since Sega took over the series from D3, it's all been straight ports! :( That wasn't bad for something like Quartet (which was a port from the ARCADE GAME!!! :D )... except for the fact that it was actually Quartet II (the 2 player version)... Because Sony sucks and only put in 2 controller ports on their freakin' NEXT GEN SYSTEM after everybody else had gone to 4 ports!!! :SM19 :fucksony:
Anyway, the ports are cool enough as long as they add extras... but I already HAVE every Panzer Dragoon game, every Treasure game, Every Wonder Boy game (except for the arcade versions), and Every Alex Kidd game! With D3, we would have most likely gotten a NEW (albeit cheap looking) Alex Kidd game based on Miracle World... With Sega doing it now, it will probably just be an Alex Kidd compilation. :(
