View Full Version : Your favorite Sega Saturn game!
So... whats your favorite Saturn game?
For me, this is reaaaaallly hard. There's so many to choose from. But even when its narrowed down, its narrowed down to like, 5 games the surpass every other game ever made!
I mean, Radiant Silvergun, PDSaga, NiGHTS, and Guardian Heroes are just stellar games all around, and I'm yet to play anything I enjoy as much as those. Then there's also the Tecno Soft greatness like Hyper Duel and Blast Wind, but I understand those are more my personal tastes. Same with my beloved Taromaru.
But, if I had to choose, I would say Radiant Silvergun. The game just oozes style and has so much stuff to unlock in it its nuts. It also sports some of the best graphics ever seen on the Saturn (transparencies bitches!) and is easily the greatest 2D shooter ever concieved.
So how about you guys?
*I'm going to let other people make the "Your favorite DC/SMS/Genesis/SegaCD/32X/GG" threads, just to be fair. :) And so that the SCSF might quit predominately being threads I start :SM14 *

Radiant Silvergun. I have played through it like 50 times since I got it, far more then any other game. I love the PD games, Saga especially.

Nights, since I unfortunatley missed out on a ton of the good ones, since I didn't own a saturn until about a year ago. I still need to play my copy of guardian heroes, but I have no time. :(

Definitely not an easy choice. I'd say Guardian Heroes. It just never gets old. The combat is enjoyable everytime I play it, the music kicks ass, the graphics are nice even if they get a bit pixellated with all the scaling and the special effects are awesome.
I dunno, though. There are too many games that I put too many hours into. I can't really convince myself which game I like best, but Guardian Heroes was definitely one of my favorites

NiGHTS, I know the usual choice. I'd have to say my 2nd favorite though is SOUKYUGERENTAI. I think its an amazing shooter, but of coarse got stolen :SM19 I hope you die in fucking hell whoever you are

Dragonforce.
Runner ups: UMK3, NiGHTS, Burning Rangers, Virtua Fighter 2, and Fighters Megamix.
If I could only get my hands on Mega Man 8 for it... did it ever come out in the states or was it Japan only?

Yup, Mega Man 8 was released in the US on Saturn. And it all has Wood Man and Cut Man in it as bonus bosses, which is the mad shit!!!
Dragon Force 2 was Japan only though. 'Tis a shame.

PDS, NiGHTs into Dreams, and Shining Force III.
All three games are so unique with so much style and flavor. It's really hard to choose though....
Saturn Bomberman should get a mention for being my all time favorite bomberman game ever.
Oh, and Puyo Puyo 2 is pretty awesome...
I'm just going to say PDS because otherwise if I choose more then one I can't choose.
You ever play Puyo Puyo Sun?
Thats my fav. Puyo game. Definitely good stuff!

puyo puyo 2= puyo puyo sun? or is that puyo puyo 3?
when i said puyo puyo 2 i meant puyo puyo sun which is my favorite that i have played.
Puyo Puyo Sun is Puyo Puyo 3 as the word "Sun" is a pun on "San" which is Japanese for 3.

If you're referring to the Saturn site, well, whenever it happens, then sure! That would be awesome!!! But I don't have the time to do what I want to do with it right now, so I'll just post random info and reviews here... until I have the time to work on it fo' really. :)

btw that is a really cool plushie. My sonic fuzzy has a baby sonic. They gave me the big one at EB. It was the pre order promotional item, but they said they didn't have any pre orders on it, so they told me I could have it. The baby is from Denny's. It was a gift from my sister so it's really special. I also have a popple, and a million clownies. I have an albino squid my sister gave me, too. he's way cool. he protects all the other guys because he's a bastard... Oh man, and then there is Cutie and Meow... I really wanted to take their picture, but they told me that I had to give them a rufus module for it... man, i don't even know what that is. They're always up to something all top secret. Once they told me they were aliens from another planet, but I couldn't tell anyone or they said something really bad might happen. . :SM8
Ha, awesomeness. Sneaky plushies are always... sneaky? :sneaking:
Those Sonic plushies are AWESOME though! They look really cool.
Lets see here, my "homie" plushies would be these fools:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a389/pzykotikjp/homies.jpg
Reala, being what I used to portray myself in photos up until Conjoshus posted my pic here. But Reala is my avatar everywhere... here, AIM, on my computer, myspace, etc. Everywhere I go, I'm Reala. Once on shmups.com some guy even said I should post a pic since he always thinks of a 6'6" Reala posting and doing Saturn rants! :SM14
Then there's lil' Reala, who just looks so damn happy all the time.
The other fella is Dank Bear. Only three of those fuckers exist!!!!! I used to be in the rap group Dank (now its a solo project) and the Dank Bear was one of our merchandise items. I've always kept up with mine, its a dope memento. Josh has another one of the three and one of his ex-girlfriends has the other one.
Other than that most of what I got is action figures (Transformers, Hellraiser, some Sonic stuff, some Mega Man stuff) and... some other stuff. I do have Megalon and Hedorah plushies though! (Monsters from Godzilla). And back home I have the NiGHTS collection (big and small). I also have a Lagi Solo Wing plushie, but I suspect its not an officially made thing and that the person who gave it to me had it made or made it herself. :O Still looks cool as hell though. Next time I go home I'll take a picture of it. :)
Gah, now the Saturn game thread is all about us talking about stuffed toys. :SM14

um..
Do you like Cotton Boomerang? It's the only Cotton game I have played, but I really like it. It's a lot of fun, and it is very cute. I love the way everything looks. My friend gave me that game for my 16th birthday, so it is really special. someone told me i am missing out if that is the only game of the series i have played. what do you think?
DarthArcturus
01-16-2007, 09:38 PM
lol, the final score was pretty funny. I like how you didn't pussy out like ign does and give game play 4.0 but the rest good scores. I'd actually give it around a 6 for game play. I can't believe after conquering the kingdom you can do others :SM14
Cotton Boomerang is VERY awesome. Damn good game. You should really check out Cotton 2 though. Cotton Boomerang is a remix of Cotton 2, but Cotton 2 has a bit better gameplay and better graphics IMO. So... definitely check that out!!!!
Cotton Rainbow on the Dreamcast isn't very good though. Its a rail-shooter, and a very mediocre one at that.
The original arcade game was ported to the PC-Engine CD initially. Its very good. Later on it was remixed on the PS1 and named Cotton Original, though I've never played that one. There's also a Cotton on the SNES called Cotton 100% thats pretty good.
But the best ones are hands down Cotton 2 and Cotton Boomerang. Those just kickass!!!! In Cotton 2 you cannot choose your characters though (can only play as Cotton), and you can't assign the special moves to buttons, so you have to perform the motions.
If you want an awesome cute 'em up though, I HIGHLY recommend Game Tengoku aka The Game Paradise. You will love it!!!! I promise!!!
Its for the Sega Saturn. There's a regular edition and a LE edition that includes a VHS tape of an episode of the anime plus a feature on the girls who sing on the soundtrack!! Its a top down shooter and it is jam packed with extras!!!! And the Saturn Mode adds two new levels, both of which are completely awesome!!!!!!!!

I was so close to buying a cotton game when I was in the saturn buying mood.
They are good. I promise you this.
And Yen got mad lucky, cause Cotton Boomerang is worth $60-70 these days. Cotton 2 is only $40-50 pending on if it comes with the calendar or not.

I love all the characters. I mean, I don't really know because I don't know japanese, but just based on the way everything looks.
If you say it's a good game, I will definitely keep an eye out for it. :eyeball:
and if you come up on any deals hit me up. I am definitely interested. =)
Do you inspire people to buy obscure video games every day?
Are you employed by Sega? do you have an official segagaga jacket? =)

JP is a Sega viral marketer.
Psssssh! Sega isn't making money off me. The fools in Akihabara are!!! :p
Anyways Jen, YES! I always try to get people to check out cool obscure Saturn stuff. Game Tengoku is easily one of my top 10 favorite shmups, and my all time favorite cute 'em up, so like I said, I know you will love it!!!
I just try to make people buy Taromaru because most of the assholes that have it just say "Well, it isn't worth $350...", and I'm like, "Well guess what fuckwad, it didn't cost that much when it came out, so the developer wasn't expecting it to be that high priced." A lot of people on other forums dig on me because I praise it so highly, and say I only do it because of its price. But I only paid $90 for my second hand (person before me bought it new) mint/complete copy, so... And if I praised games for being pricey, you would think I'd be running around swearing by Crows the Battle Action and Derisoba Deluxe... but I don't.
Same goes for RS, a lot of shmup fans knock it because of its price and its praise, but really, RS deserves it. RS is the pinnacle of gaming in my eyes.
OK OK, hit a bit of a tangent there. Anyways, I will keep an eye out on any good deals I can find concerning Game Tengoku yo! I'll even put out the word that I'm looking for a copy. :p Do you prefer LE or regular? Complete (spine/reg. card) or doesn't matter? LE will run $60-80 and the regular runs about $35-45.
And while I do not have a Segagaga jacket... I do have the LE boxset for SGGG so I do have all the Sega logo pins that came with that... :D
As far as Sega related clothes, I only have these:

I'm not gonna lie to anyone, the PD Zwei boxart always bothered me. Not that it doesn't look ok for what it is, but come on. They could have at least used artwork similar to the game rather than blast us with some generic dragon. At least the logo remained.
Speaking of sega-wear, I think I still have my Sonic 2'sday shirt around the house somewhere. Unfortunately, it isn't in good condition cause I wore the hell out of it.

The good thing about most of these expensive games is that they're more of an investment. Unless the unlikely happens (games like Radiant Silvergun and Taromaru are re-released or remade) then the games will always be able to get your money back. More likely, you'll end up making money on the deal.
I bought a couple crappy Japanese Saturn beatemups 3 or 4 years ago. 1 was Dragon Ball Z: Shin Butouden, which sucked ass. Didn't matter though. I ended up selling it for like 85 bucks and only paid 60 or 70 when I bought it.
Long story short, it isn't like you couldn't get the money back.

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before, but I might as well say it again...
I've never even played Radiant Silvergun! :( Back in the Saturn days, my local EB started experimenting with import titles and got a hand full of them in. One such title was Radiant Silvergun! As far as U.S. games, I got pretty much all the major ones upon release and never had to pay more than retail for Panzer Dragoon, Burning Rangers, House of the Dead, etc., and I even started experimenting with imports myself because I HAD to have X-Men vs. Street Fighter! And seeing how the Saturn was pretty much my craze for Capcom 2-D fighters, it's no suprise that I actively passed on Radiant Silvergun to buy... Pocket Fighters instead! :| It turns out, I didn't even "LOVE" Pocket Fighters (It's OK), but I thought I would like it better back then. Of course, now I'm kicking myself, but what can you do?
And with that said, my favorite Saturn game is kind of hard to choose. Part of me says it's Sega Ages because I got my own personal "Holy Trinity" of arcade games in perfect ports on one disc (Space Harrier, After Burner, OutRun)... but considering those have been favorites of mine since the mid-80's, it's hard to say it's my favorite "Saturn" game 10 years later.
If I eliminated that as my choice, then it may come as no suprise from my previous story, that my favorite game is probably Night Warriors! :56.9hart43: I played that game to death and then some! And that's saying a lot considering the time I played other Street Fighter Alpha, Vs. and various other fighters on the Saturn! To me, there was nothing better than a 2 player game of Night Warriors with the "classic music" code on the Saturn controller! 2-D fighting heaven in my book! :56.9hart43: Seriously, I played probably more Capcom fighters on Saturn than EVERYTHING else on Saturn combined... and I played quite a bit of the rest too!
Yen, I too have that mini Sonic plush! I've also got a Knuckles one, and I got both of them at Denny's too! I think I have a picture of it on MySpace, but I can't access that from here, so I'm not sure if it's still in my pictures there! Still, it's cool either way! He is a member of the "Big Mug Club!" :SM14
WAIT! He's in one of my Dreamcast collection pictures which I DO have access to! :D

I've never played RS either. It seems every time I forget to check an auction, it sells for like 120 bucks complete but whenever I watch them, it goes for like 200. Annoying. I think it'll be the next Saturn game I ge, though. Similar to Hawk's story, I did the same thing with RS. I had it new and sealed in my hands at Babbages. I said "well, it looks awesome and treasure makes it but I don't have any way to play jp games yet.....I'll just buy it another time". Big mistake there haha.
I'm not a hardcore shoot-em-up fan, but I do think it's a great genre. It's always fun manuevering through hundreds of bullets. You know it's good when you beat a level/boss and have to actually say to yourself "how the hell did I make it through that?". I think that's the main reason shooters will always be fun for me.
I think Capcom was a really big plus to being a Saturn owner, mostly in Japan, of course but we still got a bunch of great arcade ports. There are still a couple Saturn ports that I haven't purchased but plan to get eventually (the Dungeons and Dragons games are the first to pop into mind). So many good side-scrolling beat-em-ups and 1 on 1 fighters to be had.

Hawk: I was actually going to mention Pocket Fighter. I really like it. =D It is like my newest sega saturn game I think, and I don't really play it that much on my saturn. I only time I really play it is at the arcade by my house. awww, cute. =) rs is way better though. ^_^*

Got the Saturn backpack from a Japanese seller. I believe it was originally sold through Sega Direct, though when this happened I do not know.
Its definitely pimp. Its really small though (obviously intended for elementary school kids), so I can't really wear it. :SM9
Actually, here's my Saturn top 20:
01. Radiant Silvergun
02. Panzer Dragoon Saga
03. NiGHTS
04. Panzer Dragoon II Zwei
05. Blast Wind
06. Hyper Duel
07. Panzer Dragoon
08. Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru
09. Game Tengoku
10. Batsugun
11. Guardian Heroes
12. Soukyuugurentai
13. Shining Force III (Scenario 1)
14. Astra Superstars
15. Astal
16. Saturn Bomberman
17. Puyo Puyo Sun
18. Thunder Force Gold Pack 2
19. Battle Garegga
20. Gokujyo Parodius Da! Deluxe Pack
Order could change. I know RS and PDSaga switch up pending on my mood. :p

Hmmm. The Parodius Deluxe pack is better than Sexy Parodius? I only ask because I have Sexy Paodius and I thought it was great. It's probably one of my favorite shoot-em-ups just for laughs alone. I've played the first Parodius, but never the second or third. The third isn't included on there, is it? Maybe I'll check that out down the line.
The first Parodius? You mean the MSX game?
Gokujyo Parodius Da! Deluxe Pack contains Gokujyo Parodius (IMO the best in the series) and Parodius Da! (really good, but not as good as Gokujyo or Sexy IMO).
IMO Sexy Parodius is just behind Gokujyo, hence why the Deluxe pack is on top.
Fun fact: Gokujyo Parodius Da! Deluxe Pack has a PAL release under the title Parodius. And its all in English!!! :O
