I do hate picking a favorite game for a system full of games I will love forever, but I think I have to stick with Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap.

It's great for all the reason you'd expect, of course. Graphics, sounds, music, world design (some "levels" are pretty straight forward, but the overall world is amazing in my opinion), artwork, controls, playability....to me, it's one of those games you can play from start to finish and enjoy it each time. Not many games can do this today. No need to put anyone to sleep with the details. Just play it if you haven't.

One special note about the graphics that always impressed me is the fact that they actually animated the characters facing left and right. In other words, the swords your characters hold will always be in their right hand with a shield in the left. They could have gone for the simple reversed image like o so many games before and after, but it's those little details that get me thinking that the developers really cared when making the game. Which doesn't happen these days......almost ever but for a couple exceptions.

Someone commented about playing this game and giving us because they hated the Dragon you use early on. Please go back to the game and continue on. The Dragon is kind of the one-off character of the game.

Space Harrier without a doubt! I believe I have put more hours in on Space Harrier for Master System than any other game in my life! Of course, I COULD just have a warped sense of time since the game is so much shorter than games today... and playing for hours and hours in something like Phantasy Star Online was easy to do without noticing (I want that 500 hours of my life back :( )! Still, this is the game that made me fall in love with games, and the one that I will ALWAYS hold every game up to in comparison in the future!

"Is it fun? Heck yeah, but is it as fun as Space Harrier?"

I loved the game, despite having "blocks" around the sprites and being a little choppier than the arcade version. The Master System version actually had more stuff in it than the arcade version... such as a story, hidden secrets like a sound test, playing as a jet instead of "Harrier," hidden bonus points and a completely different boss of the game! The controls were just as tight as they needed to be, the graphics were AMAZING for a Master System game (just watching the scrolling checkerboard was hypnotizing), and it is still one of the easiest games to pick up and play, and yet still difficult to master! Even I can't guarantee I am going to beat the game every time I play it... and I have the dang thing practically memorized!

I remember when my best friend first watched me play the game, and I'd pre-position myself where I needed to be to either dodge oncoming enemies, or line myself up to blow them out of the sky, and he was all like, "DAMN! You've got this whole game memorized don't you? " Damn straight! :hbang:

Not only did I play it to death on my Master System, but years later when I got a Game Gear with a Master Gear Converter, I spent even MORE time playing it on there! I actually think the smaller screen made the game look even BETTER! With that, and a plug next to my bed, I spent nearly EVERY NIGHT all through high school playing this game in my bed after school, on rainy days, while talking on the phone, and religiously every night before going to sleep!

Space Harrier is a classic, and even though the Master System hasn't aged as well and I now play ports that are arcade perfect (or the arcade game if I ever get it fixed!!! :SM19 ), I still can't even begin to think of saying any other game is my favorite Master System game! Wonder Boy in Monster Land is a distant second though for those who care to know! ;)

Which Space Harrier? 3D or the regular?

I ask because I am wondering which to buy. :p

The regular! Space Harrier 3-D is cool too though, so I'd say get both... but the regular is the one that's my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE GAME EVER!!! :D

At the time it was Space Harrier, but now I mostly just fire up the arcade version in MAME or one of the more recent ports. The SMS version is still pretty badass, and the hardest version, but not my favorite at this point.

So in hindsight, it's Wonderboy III, which is every bit as much fun now as it ever was.
