View Full Version : S-Video ruins Radiant Silvergun!!

So as I've stated in previous threads, I recently got a new S-Video cable for my Saturn. Well, today I fired up Radiant Silvergun, and I noticed that, in place of its gorgeous TRUE transparencies there was pixel mesh. But I was really confused because I KNEW it had true transparencies. Well, being the ex-AV tech that I am, I quickly switched my Saturn back to regular AV cables and viola!!! Perfect transparencies.

Now I need to get a new switch box for AV cables... and I have to have a second Saturn hooked up at all times now for RS alone. :SM15

Fuck, where are you going to get a second Saturn from.

Though I am having a hard time deciding which one I want to use. :.

Too bad there wasn't a limited edition Treasure Saturn. That would have been sweet.

"Radiant Saturngun"

A Sega Saturn console that looks like the Silvergun from RS. :drooling:

Though I can almost guarantee that such a thing would dwarf the Navi HiSaturn in value about now.

Alright, S-Video also fucks up the transparencies in NiGHTS.

Goddammit... I'm going to need ANOTHER switch box so I can have surround sound for my Saturn games + transparencies. :SM19

Oddly enough, I think Astal's transparencies are fine. Taromaru gets FUCKED up though. Holy shit. The higher the resolution, the shittier Saturn games look. :SM9

Astal had the truest of Saturn transparancies. None of that dotted texture BS. I'm thinking the S-Video is just highligting the transparency workaround with the sharper image. Burning Rangers probably suffers the same on S-Video. I'd be willing to bet the Guadian Heroes background transparencies look good still.

I...I just had to post in this thread...it's so great to still read of people loving Saturn goodness :D

Yeah, the GH transparencies are fine. As are the ones in Silhouette Mirage.

I guess if its true 2D then the transparencies are fine, but if its in 3D the transparencies get jacked.

Actually, here's something really funny:
In Super Tempo, the ghost dog is PERFECTLY transparent when it stands still. But when it starts moving it goes to pixel-mesh. :disgust:

I was thinking of getting S-Video cables for my Saturn, but, after reading this, I think I might get regular A/V cables instead. Right now, I have to deal with RF for my Saturn, though it actually gives a decent picture with RF, or at least as close to decent as RF can get.

Really? I remember buying the RF unit as soon as I moved my Saturn onto my shitty little TV. I remember the picture and sound being horrible. Might have been the shitty Sanyo TV, though.

Maybe I'm a bit biased since many games don't use upscaled graphics like in some recent collections. Yeah, the sound from Mono isn't that great, but the picture isn't too bad. Anyway, I'm definitely getting some new cables for the system. The yard sale I got the Saturn only had the RF box, no AV cables.

This is correct. 2D, the Saturn can handle transparencies just like the SNES did. 3D games, and the Sat goes "Does not compute!":grenade:

What happens is that most people used regular composite video which blurs the image somewhat, blending the pixels. S-video and RGB reveal the pixel mesh.

I'm still waiting for a PDS remake on Xbox or 360, Sega! Or are you going to forget you own the franchise, just like Streets of Rage?!:gun:

They did some trickery with even the 2D transparencies sometimes.

Guardian Heroes would only display the backgrounds through most of the laser attacks, explosions etc. If a character was behind a beam, for example, you'd see right through the character and into the background. Then you had gems like Astal where you could see through crystals with 100% true transparent effects. I wonder if it was done for performance purposes on Guardian Heroes?

Some 2D games had weird transparencies... most notable off the top of my head are Treasure's offerings (Guardian Heroes and Silhouette Mirage) as well as Super Tempo.

But Astal and Keio Flying Squadron 2 had perfect transparencies.

Silhouette Mirage has true transparencies for the most part.

Laser attack does some weird shit though. Same thing in Guardian Heroes. Though the chicky has a perfectly transparent cape.

I've only played RS in a cab and it was nice looking. I have always prefered the bright colorful 2d shups over games like RS and Terra Diver. Although great games, I always thought they looked dull in comparison. Weird how s-vid makes it worse. With my supergun, RS looked better, but I think that was due to the j-rok.

Are you sure about her cape? I think it uses the same trick as the lasers. I'd pop it in but don't have a TV to see it on. I'm pretty sure if you walk her in front of another character, you'll right through them and into the background.

I finally got a copy of Keio Flying Squadron II for Saturn. Still haven't played it, though. I might but a second, non HDTV for my standard def games. They just look better that way.

Don't forget to tell us what you think after you've had some quality time with it ; )

I play all my Saturn games using an S-video cable, and Radiant Silvergun looks fine for me...

Ever tried RS through AV cables?Uh huh, but it's been a few years since I used AV for Saturn. So....let's take your word over mine here.;)
