This makes me a happy JP.

Now to make sure I secure Ghostbusters, Penguin Land, Ghost Laser, and Ghost House.

Oh, and of course, Space Harrier 3D!!!!!!! That is a MUST!!!!!!!! :)

Edit:
Changed the name, 'cause I'm cool.

Hehehe, you guys are about to see me in super Master System geek mode, which is a mode I don't think I've been in yet. :O

Too bad Hawk and efumf are kinda scarce round here these days. :.

jp

How is Posiedon Wars 3D? I'm thinking I would like all the 3D games, just 'cause. :p

You jinxed the thread! :p

Sorry, I got a new job and have been busy getting settled in... Not to mention actually working! :SM14

Anyway, I was going to say... "I have that!" :p Nice purchase there! I really should just finish up my Master System, Sega CD and 32X collections... I'm only missing 10 domestic Master System games, and of course they were the ones that came out LATE in the life of the system and weren't seen much on store shelves... or else I would have bought them! :p I bought EVERY Master System game I could find that I didn't have for the longest time (before EBAY). Now that we have this wonderful tool called EBAY, I should be able to complete it without any problems... but I was just too busy with other things at the time!

Man, just looking at that collection... Whoever had it, had a pretty solid collection! If you haven't had any of these games in the past, then this is an awesome start!

jp

HAWK!!!!!! MWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!! Glad to see you around bro. :)

Aside from whats pictured, here's what all I will be snagging for the Master System next week:
Penguin Land
Power Strike II
Cloud Master
R-Type
Space Harrier 3D
Ghost Laser
Sonic
Sonic 2
Sonic Chaos
Ghostbusters

I think that'll get me started proper. Oh, Hawk, whats the Master System's answer to Zelda? I used to have the game and LOVED IT! But I cannot recall its name. And there's some other game I had that I loved that I can't remember... hmm... now that I think about it, I can't remember anything about it! My mind has gone completely blank! :.

But yes, any recommendations from you good sir? :)

Bruhaha69

Nice purchase. Altered beast sucks nuts for the SMS, but there are some good games in there. It looks like everything is in good condition, too.

On the 3D games, get Maze Hunter 3D. Slow moving, but I always thought it was cool. Tough, too.

jp
01-17-2007, 01:11 PM
I just secured a BRAND NEW copy of Power Strike.

I will have Power Strike I and II. :D

I am very very happy. :)

jp
01-17-2007, 01:12 PM
Hey Hawk, what Master System games do you not own? While I'm doing my shopping I'll keep an eye out for ya and hit you up if I find any of 'em! :)

HawkClay
01-17-2007, 01:33 PM
It's funny, I just had this same conversation! LOL! Anyway, the "Zelda" game for Master System was Golvellius... and there was also one called Golden Axe Warrior... which just happens to be one of the few I don't own! :56.raid3:

As for games I don't own... I don't have my "list" with me, but I know a few...

- Golden Axe Warrior
- Parlor Games
- Spiderman
- Sonic the Hedgehog

Ummm... I'm drawing a blank on the rest, and actually, I MAY end up having Sonic... I need to check! Still, it's not like it would take much effort on my part to just finish! :p

nice pick up JP. I've been interested in starting a SMS collection. I get to play so many original sega titles!

mr_chun
01-17-2007, 04:50 PM
Niice! I'll have to work on one of those after I get a Saturn. I need Sega CD and 32x as well. Ugh... I wish I had been older during the Sega days.

jp
01-17-2007, 06:31 PM
How are the Chuck Rock games?

jp
01-17-2007, 06:42 PM
I really need to get off Ebay.

I'm going to restart my SMS collection with more games than I had as a kid. :disgust:

But dammit! They're all so cheap!! :O

Except Power Strike and Power Strike II... as PS cost me $23 shipped and PSII is costing me $55 shipped.

HawkClay
01-17-2007, 06:50 PM
How are the Chuck Rock games?

If they were released for the Master System, then it was outside the U.S. so I'm not sure how those hold up. I personally owned both games on the Sega CD and thought the first one was enjoyable. Definitely above average, but nothing I thought warranted a sequel... but the second one on Sega CD is fantastic! That game had one of the best opening cinemas in a game EVER, and it's a solid platformer with great music, hidden areas, and plenty of humor! I'd say Chuck 2 Son of Chuck is DEFINITELY worth it... at least for Sega CD! Although, I can think of plenty of games that seemed average on the Genesis only to be pushed the extra mile on Sega CD to make it an excellent title! Again, one of the downfalls of the Sega CD sadly... but man, some of those ports were pretty dang solid after all was said and done!

jp
01-17-2007, 06:52 PM
I have 'em on Sega CD as well, I was just wondering how they were on the SMS. :)

I'm very wary of Genesis/Sega CD ports on the SMS. Unless I know its like Sonic and is a completely different game.

HawkClay
01-17-2007, 07:06 PM
Yeah, usually the ports of Genesis games are pretty tough to take if you already played the Genesis version. Of course, at the time I was just happy to be able to play games like Golden Axe and Altered Beast since all I had at the time was a Master System, and I LOVED the games in arcades! They definitely filled the void, but they were certainly not worthy compared to their Genesis counterparts! It's funny though, it seems the games that were ported directly from the arcade to the Master System turned out pretty good... Shinobi, Space Harrier, After Burner (now with bosses :O )... Strange that going from Genesis to Master System didn't turn out as well... but maybe that's just coincidence, or the fact that the games I mentioned only used 1 or 2 buttons instead of 3. Whatever the case...

Oh, and I meant to say something about Power Strike 2... I've never played the game, but I'd be interested in adding that import to my list of games to get for sure! I absolutely LOVED the original!

*NP* Alien Syndrome! :D

jp
01-17-2007, 10:30 PM
Power Strike II was a US game if I recall correctly. Might've been European though... those guys got all the good stuff (Ghost House and Laser Ghost!!!!) But I had Power Strike II as a kid... so it was on sale in the US at some point. I too loved the original. I highly doubt it was Japanese though as Power Strike was the US title for Aleste. So... yeah.

Here's an indepth review of it:

jp
01-17-2007, 10:47 PM
OK, I'm done. No more Master System games. NONE!!!! Not for awhile anyways. Jesus. This is what I've accumulated thus far:

Sonic Chaos
Ninja Gaiden
Power Strike
Power Strike II
Ghostbusters
Penguin Land
The Ninja
Kung Fu Kid
Great FootBall
World Grand Prix
Wonder Boy
Kenseiden
Aztec Adventure
Zaxxon3D
Double Drangen
Fantasy Zone II
Great Baseball
Alien Syndrone
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Out Run

Super Space Invaders
Kings Quest
Cloud Master
Danan: The Jungle Fighter
Gain Ground
Galaxy Force
Heavyweight Champ

Robocop vs. Terminator (wtf?)
Running Battle
Speedball
Spellcaster
Summer Games
Xenon 2
Fire and Forget 2
Golvellius
Ghost House
Laser Ghost
Psychic World
Space Harrier 3D

I'm taking a break. Some games are going to get ignored as is. Oh well. The price of all that comes to around $250 though, so... thats not bad at all really. About 1/3 of the paycheck I'll be getting, so yay!

Edit:
Gah, 50 fucking games. Thats one way to start a collection. :SM14

Bruhaha69
01-17-2007, 11:04 PM
Well, might as well go all out hahah. More games than I ever owned for SMS. good list though. $250 for all that gaming isn't a bad deal at all.

HawkClay
01-17-2007, 11:38 PM
I'm near positive Power Strike 2 was never released in the U.S... At least it's never been on any U.S. Master System game list that I've seen. Still, the original Power Strike was a limited edition game that was only available via mail order... but I was lucky enough to have a store that got it, so I picked it up locally! ;)

Dang, that is an impressive list you've got there! That's half the U.S. library right there! :p

And I hear you on Laser Ghost!!! I loved that game in the arcades!!! We did get Ghost House though! I think the import may have been a cartridge instead of a card though. Not sure about that since I never imported much for Master System (only Mortal Kombat YEARS later... and I MAY have OutRun 3-D... I remember I was in a bidding war for it once, but can't remember if I won or not! :p ).

jp
01-17-2007, 11:40 PM
Maybe Power Strike II was a PAL release then and I just happened across it in an import store then. Dunno. It is a great game though.

Oh, and what is up with the "Card" system thing? Sega was trying to go the hucard route like NEC or something? Is there an advantage to those?

Also, aside from the theoretical Gunstar Heroes (which I've never seen confirmed, I hear it came out in Brazil though), whats the big rare gem of the SMS? Not that I'll be going after it anytime soon, but inquiring minds like to know. :)

First off great to see Hawk posting here some more!!!

Second, nice haul JP! I could never go back and restart any of the old systems. When I sold off my Genesis, Saturn and Game Gear that was it. I know I shouldn't have, but space and time are at a premium. As it is I have a huge backlog of Xbox games and now my 360, DS and GBA collections are growing......

jp
01-17-2007, 11:50 PM
'Tis understandable good sir!!!

My primary reason for pursuing the SMS at this time is because, due to school, I will not have the time to sit down and take on the next-gen offerings. Therefore, I need some nice "pick up and play" stuff. I also want something cheap to collect for for a bit, as opposed to the Saturn stuff or the PC-Engine Duo library. So I decided to revisit the Master System. I think it'll be cool. :)

Psycho Fox and Golvellius came in the mail!

Golvellius is in VERY good condition.

Psycho Fox has game rental stickers all over it. I really wish sellers would say shit like that in the auction. Ugh. Now I have to clean this thing. Other than that its in alright condition.

jp

Huzzah! Finally got to play some.

First, the bad news:

3D glasses do not work.
One of the controllers does not work.

So... gotta go buy another controller and a mint condition pair of 3D glasses if I can find them. Bleh.

As for what I played:
Alex Kidd in Miracle World - Awesome game. Stupid fucking hard, but awesome.
Penguin Land - Just as great as I remember it.
Power Strike - Stupid fucking hard, but very fun.
Psycho Fox - VERY cool game.
Alien Syndrome - AWESOME!!!! Just... awesome.
The Ninja - Very fun... very hard.
Thunder Blade - very cool.
Ghostbusters - Need to spend more time with it...
Golvellius - Love it.
Fantasy Zone II - Love it.

And... I think thats all I played so far.

I never built a quality level on Penguin Land, but I think it was awesome that they gave you a level editor that long ago.

Oh my God Missile Defense is so cool! :O

Bruhaha69
01-31-2007, 07:48 AM
I think Missile Defense was the last game I purchased for the SMS when Toys R Us still carried SMS games. Good light phaser game.

HawkClay
01-31-2007, 11:05 AM
What was wrong with the glasses jp?

Missile Defense is the game that convinced me to get a Master System instead of an NES... but then we ended up getting both anyway, but Missile Defense sold me on the Master System!

So did you beat Alex Kidd? How far did you get? That game took me 10 years to beat! :^O

Alien Syndrome! :x Man, that game had me in a panic with that "heartbeat" music and the timed levels! Very cool 2-player co-op game too! I LOVE co-op games!

Gotta respect the Penguin! B-)

Bruhaha69
01-31-2007, 12:23 PM
Alex Kidd took me 20 years Hawk, haha. I just beat it this past year with my older cousin. It was a day of extreme joy.

jp
01-31-2007, 01:32 PM
I guess there was too much dust or something on the contacts that went into the card slot for the 3D adapter. Definitely glad the glasses work though... as the 3D gaming is a blast!!!

No, I beat did beat Alex Kidd. Paper Head has me stumped for the time being. :SM19

I did remember where the secret world is in stage 3 though. :)

HawkClay
01-31-2007, 02:36 PM
You'll kick yourself when you figure out how easy Paper-head is! Definitely the easiest boss in the game (no I'm not kidding either)! Now Janken on the other hand... :|

jp
01-31-2007, 02:37 PM
WHAT!?!?!

OK, I must know the secret. :deal:

HawkClay
01-31-2007, 02:41 PM
Just jump over him and stand behind his body. When his head flies around in the pattern, it always goes to his body and then back up. Nothing will ever even touch you on the other side of him, and you can just punch his body as his head hits that spot... Plus, if you miss, then no big deal since you could litterally just stand there forever and punch like crazy! You won't ever even lose a life on him again now that you know this! :p

jp
01-31-2007, 02:47 PM
Wait... I'm losing at the Janken Match.

HawkClay
01-31-2007, 03:00 PM
Oh, well... You suck then! :p

j/k

Did you get the Telepathic Orb from the cave? You can't miss it, but it looks difficult to reach. Right before the orb, there are some bricks and coin boxes you can break. Punch them and a piece of the "ceiling" above the orb will disappear. Simply walk off the edge towards the ball and you'll fall in the section with the orb. It will look like you are trapped, but simply walk to the right and the terrain will alter itself so you can just jump on out! It should be a piece of cake!

OK, well now that you have the orb, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE IT BEFORE A MATCH! I thought you had to for the longest time, but as long as it's in your inventory, then you'll be able to "read their minds!" If you actually use the orb, then you lose it, so just keep it in inventory!

OK, so now that you have the orb and you get to Paper-head, just figure out his pattern. This pattern DOES NOT CHANGE from game to game! If you miss it the first time, then write down what he did and play again and you shoud be able to easily beat him with or without the orb. Still, with the orb you can just pick what beats them (although they will sometime change at the last second, so be quick on the controller in this case). But like I said, figure out his choice pattern and it will never change! :D

jp
01-31-2007, 03:23 PM
The pattern doesn't change!?!?!?!?!?!?

Man... and here I was thinking Sega had made some kinda psychic AI.

Yeah, I had the orb thingy, I could see the thought bubble. Its just that he would always change to something that would beat me. Ack!

Oh well, I gotta do homework soon. Maybe I'll beat Alex Kidd tonight, assuming the new stuff doesn't come in today.

Bruhaha69
01-31-2007, 04:22 PM
Are you sure, Hawk? Paper-head's pattern is the first that DOES change, unless I remember incorrectly.

I can always beat Scissor and Rock without an issues, but I believe Paper-head alters his order of actions. Maybe he has multiple patterns, but it's not always the same for him.

Now that I think about it, maybe it's the second time around. I was drunk when I just beat it so I only half remember.

Nevermind, I was wrong. They do have distinct patterns.

HawkClay
01-31-2007, 04:44 PM
No, the pattern never changes. They don't necessarily follow the same pattern as the other guys, but every time you play the game they pick the same thing every time. The first two were easy to remember because they never picked "themself." Here's the breakdown:

Rock-head (First time):
- He picks Scissors first (You pick Rock)
- He picks Paper second (You pick Scissors)

Scissors-head (First time):
- He picks Paper first (You pick Scissors)
- He picks Rock second (You pick Paper)

Paper-head (First time):
- He picks Scissors first (You pick Rock)
- He picks Paper second (You pick Scissors)

Rock-head (Second time):
- He picks Rock first (You pick Paper)
- He picks Rock second (You pick Paper)

Scissors-head (Second time):
- He picks Scissors first (You pick Rock)
- He picks Scissors second (You pick Rock)

Paper-head (Second time):
- He picks Scissors first (You pick Rock)
- He picks Paper second (You pick Scissors)

Janken:
- He picks Rock first (You pick Paper)
- He picks Rock second (You pick Paper)

The only time you will notice changes is if you lose a round to them... Then the pattern keeps going it's own way. I don't know the pattern after the first 2 rounds, so if you screw up, then rely on the telepathy orb!

Bruhaha69
01-31-2007, 04:49 PM
Yeah, I was remembering when I jammed it up. Then I'd never know what patter was next

jp

I have to day, the castles in Alex are almost too hard. There shouldn't be places where you can effectively end your game with no hope aside from restarting. I still love it, but it can be frustrating.

No...

But that looks horrible.

What killed me was these shower heads that filled the room up with deadly gas or something, and the other side of the room was blocked and there was some kinda special block on the left hand side. I didn't hit the special block so I died twice trying to get to the side that was walled off. :~

Bruhaha69
02-02-2007, 02:34 PM
That's exactly the kinda of too hard I'm talking about. If you don't run through there KNOWING that they're gonna trap you, you're done. It's trial and error unless you've got Spiderman reflexes.

Hawk reminded us of the water trick not too far back. There are 2 good ways to do it and one very bad way to do it.

HawkClay
02-02-2007, 02:44 PM
I feel a story coming on...

When I was a kid and we got Alex Kidd in Miracle World, I of course SUCKED back then! I could typically make it to the forrest with Scissors-head and got my butt kicked by all the spikes on the ground and attempting to manuver a motorcycle on tiny blocks in the air. Still, I got to the point where I could beat the bear with ease, and then made it to the first castle... which at the time was TOUGH!

OK, so I spent a good deal of my earlier gaming days making it to the first castle and never making it past it. Sometimes I could make it a little bit further, but not usually too much. Not to mention the actual boss FIGHTS would kick my butt! When Scissors-head started shooting at me, I'd panic and of course jump into his floating head... Paper-head gave me nightmares, and I started making it to him fairly consistently.

Once I figured out that pattern with Paper-head, then I was able to beat him with ease... and I was SO excited because I just knew Cragg Lake was the next level and I was going to beat the game!!! :D

Then that mystical redish-orange castle appeared on the screen! My brothers and I were all just in awe that there was a HIDDEN CASTLE on the map! A little scared, a little intrigued, I ventured into the first room of the castle and BAM! The floor drops out from under me! :O I knew I was in for a freakin' tough time! The gas room got me once, then I figured out I could go out and back in and it would reset to give me a chance! Still, I didn't make it very far at all in this castle!

After playing and playing and PLAYING this game, I had the rest of the game so down that I could beat the earlier levels in my sleep... but Janken's castle kicked my @$$ every time! I got a little further each time... until this room...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/HawkClay/Spikes.gif

:ashrah_upset:

I died. I'd play the whole game over again, get to that room... and lose every life trying to maneuver through the maze of spikes! I did this for YEARS and I did manage to make it all the way through once or twice... but then ended up getting my butt handed to me by Janken himself! Seriously, this is how it was for me from about 2 years of experience with the game, all the way to my high school days! Of course, I got to the point where I didn't play the game EVERY day like I did when I was a kid, but I still had this NEED to finish the game that started it all! I picked it up a few times each year and proceeded to get to that room... and die!

FINALLY, my junior year in high school, I ended up beating Eternal Champions for Genesis... Which is one of the hardest games I've EVER played! I felt great! I felt like I could conquer the world if I wanted to! I decided it was the perfect time to put the whoop up on some Alex Kidd! I popped in my game, made it to that dang room... Died! I tried again... DIED!!! I tried one more time, and I made it! SWEET! I get another shot at Janken! Alright Janken, your butt is going down! I was able to beat him in his Janken match... and then lost all but one of my lives actually fighting him... Then I had a lucky punch, and I managed to take him out!!!

OK, I was nervous now! I had never seen Cragg Lake! I had no clue how hard it would be... especially after coming out of Janken's Castle! Lucky for me, it wasn't NEARLY as bad as the castle, and I figured out the level with ease! I had, for the first time in my life, beaten Alex Kidd in Miracle World... My first game ever, and it only took me a little over 10 years to do!

This was one of the biggest highlights in my gaming life, and I marked it on my calendar! I still have that calendar packed away, so I could remember the day that I finally overcame my arch nemesis! Alex Kidd in Miracle World! :SM6

Now Wonder Boy and Monster Land and Bomber Raid? Those rivals took 20 years! But that's another story for another time! ;)

Can you not just use the invincibility powder in that room o' spikes?

HawkClay
02-02-2007, 03:44 PM
Nope! Spikes kill either way! You MAY want to try it since I've spent the last 20 something years convinced I tried it and it didn't work, but I'm 99% positive it was one of the first things I tried and it didn't work! Boy, I'll sure feel like an idiot if it does work! :SM14

Honestly, the spike room isn't as bad as it seems... but it took me up until last year to figure out the "trick" to beating it! I can do it every time now! ;)

jp

What is this trick you speak of my friend? :deal: :sneaking:

Bruhaha69
02-02-2007, 04:12 PM
I'm not saying the right way to do it, but I will say that when I beat it recently, I used the cane to float through it without any trouble. That's cheating, though.

I never beat it when I was a kid because of the damn tablet crap right at the end. I got there so many times and the order never seemed to make sense. Of course, it made sense NOW, but back then I had no clue.

HawkClay
02-02-2007, 04:30 PM
Here's a copy/paste from what I said on IGN:

You'd think that... but the only times I've ever beaten the game were when I went through the spikes! Last time I played, I actually figured out ANOTHER secret and it made the spikes INFINITELY easier! Don't read if you don't want to know!

You won't swim UP into the spikes unless you actually hit up! That means if you can just get below the top layer and let yourself drift to the top, you'll then hover right below the top spikes! Then you can simply hit left/right and move across them without any worries about dying!

Crazy huh? If I had known that, then that would have REALLY helped when I was a kid!

Something else, in a quest to find out where to use the cane (I used it in the wrong place every time), I found a site (in progress) that has a SUPER map of the final castle!

http://smspower.free.fr/ak/sitev1/mw/maps/16_Janken's_Castle.png

It looks like you have to fly over the fire in that one room! I've never tried that! Well, that should make it easier the next time!

I love Alex Kidd! It saddens me that Sega decided to axe 3D-Ages from doing their classic remakes! Now that Sega has taken over, all they've done is put out various compilations of their classic games. That's cool for people who don't already HAVE those classic games, but I've been playing those all to death for YEARS! I wanted a fresh spin on those classic games, and even though they didn't have the biggest production budget in the world, they were still solid GAMES for the most part! It's all those current gen graphics whores who can't play them... and I guess that explains it! I just wish Sega would have at LEAST waited until they put out that new Alex Kidd game! As it stands now, I don't think it's even on their radar anymore!

I have played Miracle World before and never got real far. This was at a friends house who has a master system (don't live by him anymore) Alex the Kidd makes mario look like a kids game.

Space Harrier and Global Defense came in the mail today!!!

Still no Laser Ghost or Ghost House though. :~ Transbot should be here next week sometime. I also managed to snag Wonder Boy III: Dragon's Trap, Astro Warrior, Safari Hunt/Hang On, Blade Eagle 3D, and... something else I don't remember.

Really want to snag Master of Darkness though!

Bruhaha69

Global Defense is kinda cool. I remember crying until my mom broke in..that's how I got that game haha.

Pretty cool 2-player mode. 1 player controls the satellite and the other player controls the gun. Not bad when you have somebody who can play the game well.

Wonder Boy III: Dragon's Trap, Bomber Raid, Ghost House, and Laser Ghost came in the mail today. Haven't played them yet... too busy studying. :(

They're all in PRISTINE condition though. I was fucking amazed, as that is kinda rare for SMS games (it seems).

Just got done with my first try on Bomber Raid.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a389/pzykotikjp/bomberaid1cc.jpg

:SM14

I 1-lifed it through the first 3 levels then died in level 4 since my roomate has decided the best time to converse is when I'm shmupping. :SM8 But I pulled through and fought my way through level 4 and 5.

When I beat the final boss I was like, "OK, come on, show me the secret weapon!" so... I was kinda let down that THAT was the final boss. Lame. I was hoping that the final boss would be different in the second loop since they changed boss patterns in the second loop (added planes to the 1st boss, 2nd boss is faster, 3rd boss dives at you), but I died once in level 4... and level 4 on the 2nd loop is just retarded if you aren't powered up. I did manage to break 1mill in points though!!!!

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a389/pzykotikjp/bomerraidscore.jpg

Yay!

Oh, the phaser gun isn't working for Laser Ghost. Like... the shot is just staying in the same place. Why?

jp
02-09-2007, 06:28 PM
Oh, and I paid for:
Cloud Master, R-Type, Astro Warrior, Safari/Hang-On, and Rescue Mission today. I think that'll be it for me for awhile in the SMS front though. Might pick up Alex Kidd in Shinobi World... but other than that I'm done for the time being.

Bruhaha69
02-09-2007, 06:54 PM
R-Type is pretty damn good for SMS. Astro Warrior is pretty short on variety of levels, but it's also fun. Cloud Master is great but tough. Definitely the kind of game where you should just start over if you die anytime after the 3rd level.

What kind of monitor are you using with the light gun? Is it only a problem with this game and no other light phaser games? It's a PAL game, right? Maybe the light phaser games worked slightly different because of the 50hz rate of PAL tv's?

jp
02-09-2007, 06:56 PM
Thats what I was thinking bru. Its probably since I have a 60hz TV as opposed to 50hz... since Missile Defense 3D works fine.

Frogacuda
02-09-2007, 07:07 PM
Laser Ghost uses the Light Phaser in conjunction with the control pad. You need both. It's not a PAL/NTSC thing. SMS games switch regions automatically.

Bruhaha69
02-09-2007, 07:10 PM
Well that answers that. Why does the box say "or" for control pad and gun? Kinda misleading.

Frogacuda

Well that answers that. Why does the box say "or" for control pad and gun? Kinda misleading.Because you can play it with just a joypad as well, or with the lightgun/joypad combo

Bruhaha69

Weird. So the light gun just acts as the trigger, i take it? I haven't played many SMS games outside of the US. This one looks pretty good, at least graphically (from what I've seen in screens).

Ghost House is fucking awesome. Very addictive game IMO. Granted, I haven't killed a "Real" Dracula yet. He always gets me. :~

Still can't figure Laser Ghost out. Looks cool though.

Won't be playing Wonder Boy III until I can beat Monster Land.

'Tis all.

Weird. So the light gun just acts as the trigger, i take it? I haven't played many SMS games outside of the US. This one looks pretty good, at least graphically (from what I've seen in screens). No, you shoot with the lightgun and use the joystick button to activate your special. With the joypad mode you aim a little cursor on-screen, and one button shoots and the other one is the special.

jp
02-10-2007, 02:43 AM
See, but my phaser isn't shooting things on screen. Its locked in place. :~

Anyways, of what I've played Ghost House is my fav. out of that lot. I can get to round 4. That game just has so much cool shit in it, I love it.

Frogacuda

Ghost House is probably one of the more underrated games on the system. WB3 will be the gem of that lot, though, if you have any love for great platforming.

Saving Wonderboy III for last is a good choice in my opinion. Favorite master system game, period. Probably my favorite 8 bit game of all time.

R-Type and Cloud Master came in the mail yesterday.

I almost 1CC'd R-Type. Made it to level 6 on 1 life my first run. Level 6 sucks though.

Cloud Master is pleasantly difficult.

Now I've got Transbot (which was a card... grrr... I hate the cards), Rescue Mission, Astro Warrior, and Hang-On/Safari Hunt.

Transbot is pretty neat. The graphics are really cool but the sound is a bit painful. The hidden level idea is neat though, granted, if the + enemies don't show up for awhile it gets annoying. All in all, I like it. The increase in difficulty as you loop it is pretty nice.

Astro Warrior is pretty cool as well IMO. I like the boss fights and the increase in difficulty as you loop it is fairly cool. Fun game.

Rescue Mission is a BLAST! I love that one, so props to Frog on the heads up. :) Very fun phaser game.

Hang-On/Safari Hunt is pretty cool too.

Next I guess I have Blade Eagle 3-D, Time Commando, Shinobi, Afterburner, and... something else coming in the mail.

I'm not sure how you managed to beat it the way you explained, Frog. I was able to get through a certain amount of levels (I forget how many.....haven't played in a long time) but I remember that the missles eventually start hitting that safe spot. I can't remember anymore.

So I was up for 3 hours last night playing...

... Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap

AMAZING game. Definitely the best Wonder Boy I've played yet and a damn good platformer to boot. I gotta get more charm stones so I can get a weapon to beat the zombie dragon (I have a Mithril Sword... heh, when I fought it I was doing 3 dmg per hit :SM14 ), but I'm definitely loving this game.

Yes!!!! This is the best SMS game of all time.

You know how you can tell that game had love put into it? Different animations between facing left and right. That's heart, baby. Man that game is awesome. Plus it has pigs smoking cigarettes. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it.

Question for Frog on this game: Did the Japanese version have FM audio? If so, how is it?

Frogacuda

Did the Japanese version have FM audio? If so, how is it?Wonderboy III didn't come out in Japan until the GameGear port years later. But if you play the US version on a Japanese system it does support the FM module (and it'll change the title screen to say "Monster World II, oddly enough). And it sounds great.

Ummm... Maybe you should play After Burner for Master System again! Bru is right, the "trick" where you can simply hold to one side of the screen only works up until level 12, and then EVERYTHING can kill you, not just bosses! I remember this very well, because After Burner was one of my absolute favorites and easily one of my most played games for Master System. It sucked because if you died on level 12, then you couldn't continue either! The game got INSANELY hard at this point, and dodging missiles became an absolute nightmare! Now, maybe you played a different version of the game or something, but I can attest to the "trick" only working until level 12 on my copy of After Burner for Master System.

Also, you could just run away from the bosses anyway... So that wasn't a big deal at all either! :p
