Mmm...so much quality... :D
Yes. And thats with me skirting over games that have any little bit of a language barrier!!!! So the Sakura Taisens aren't there, the other Shining Force III entries, Wachenroeder.... lots o' stuff. :O
*hugs Saturn* Its the only console I've ever owned that has pretty much been hooked up the entire time its been around. Well, excluding the 360 and Wii.

There's so many more Saturn games I want to add to my collection. :(
I just want Eyeful Home and Heim Waltz so I can round out the unholy trilogy. :(
And I guess someday I need to buy the last 6 shmups for me to complete that whole thing. :SM14

I've played about 80-90% of those games, which is pretty damned good for someone who's never owned a Saturn. Of course some of them I played on PSX or in the arcade, but still.
Also, Tempest 2000 is kind of crappy on Saturn. The Jag version is still the best. 3000 on Nuon is pretty rockin' too, even if the screen gets cluttered.
Did I put Tempest 2000 on the list?
The only console anyone has any business playing that game on is an Atari Jaguar.
Update:
It has come to my attention that Mizabuka Adventure is actually the rarest officially released Saturn game. I did not know this... but apparently it only had 3500 copies made, whereas Crows had 5000 and Taromaru had 7500. Apparently its value has also doubled since last I saw, so its now a triple digit game.
And know you know. :)

You know, it's funny... After talking about how I've never played Guardian Heroes in that other thread, and then looking at your list... As far as domestic games are concerned, I have most of the rest of them that are worth getting (according to your list)! I have the rest of the "expensive" ones listed except for Magic Knight Rayearth, and I'm only missing a handful of the "cheap" ones!
Now I'm all excited to go through and organize my Saturn collection and see what all is missing! :D I need to complete my Master System, 32X and Sega CD collections first... but the Saturn collection may not be TOO difficult to round out depending on what's seriously missing... Man, I can't wait until next week! :(
Oh, and you listed Vampire Savior twice... Thanks for the list though! Definitely one of my new favorite posts! :x

NICE LIST! *sniffle*
But don't forget~
Domestic:
Mr. Bones (not for everyone, but a typically "SEGA"- i.e. unique- action/music experience)
Daytona USA CCE (a worthy update to my favorite racing game)
Skeleton Warriors (probably worth playing if only for that soundtrack from Tallarico)
Also, I noticed you listed 'Super Tempo' under imports. Would that have anything to do with Tempo for 32X?

'Twas the sequel.
I thought I listed Mr. Bones and Daytona though. Hmmm... I'll fix that. Good eye! :)
Dunno about Skeleton Warriors... I've never been a fan of that one... :dead: Especially not those weird 3D rail-shooter levels. Blegh! But I will say the music was pretty cool. Just the gameplay was... not.
As soon as I finish this semester I will be posting a review of Super Tempo. In the meantime feel free to check out the other... 4 or 5 reviews I have on this board. :)

Also, I noticed you listed 'Super Tempo' under imports. Would that have anything to do with Tempo for 32X?Yeah, it's a sequel. It's a great game, though it's pretty different from its precursor. Still a side scrolling platformer, but the move set is different and the overall feel is more like Rayman (where the original was more like Bonk).
Hit me up sometime and I can hook you up with a copy if you want.

I paid a grip for Super Tempo and that game is not that good and Tryrush Deppy I paid alot for that and it wasn't that good either. But jp I didn't see Last Bronx the import version is better than the domestic version because it has the econd disc.

Sorry for the late replies guys, I've had some issues using the site -_-
A friend of mine was one of the artists on Skeleton Warriors.Noice; the game did have a real slick look to it. Like jp said though, the gameplay wasn't very memorable...still, looked and sounded fantastic!

Really? How much would you like for it? :3Oh, I meant a copy of the of the digital variety, which you could play on the PC or on a modded Saturn. So free. The game can go for like $90 on ebay, so a real copy isn't really worth it.

Never a bother. If you IM me, I can send you the files and the emulator. Just a heads up, Saturn emus are kinda slow so you'll need a kinda sorta decent CPU. Nothing too crazy though, just something made in the last 3 years.

It's abandonware, anyway. Is MediaQuest even still in business?

According to what I've seen, they're still in business, but hardly do any in-house development anymore. They've been localizing games for companies like Activision and THQ in Japan.

Frogacuda: Thanks again for your generous offer, but I realized I'm kinda fussy when it comes to my games...by that I mean I prefer to play the originals over emulations. I know it'll cost me more time & money, but I'll just see about scoping out an import copy ; ]
And thank you guys SO much for all the help you've been giving me - I never had a clue Tempo got a sequel! Kinda makes me wonder what other lost gems have evaded my SEGA sensors XD

I think the next games I will get off this list are Magic Knight Rayearth and Keio Flying Squadron 2. I might for for the jp version of Keio since the pal version seems to be a bit rarer....at least from how often I've seen the two for sale.

MKR? LOVED that game, even though I never saw the anime; another wonderful localization from WD = J
I was considering Keio too...but I've got my eyes on Super Tempo now! =P
Wonder how it compares to the one on SEGA CD...
Funny you guys should mention Keio Flying Squadron 2...
Semester ends Tuesday.
Planet Joker, Super Tempo, and Astra Superstars review that weekend.
Keio Flying Squadron 2 (PAL) review the following the week. ;)
Just FYI, Keio Flying Squadron 2 isn't a shmup like the original on Sega CD (though it has shmup levels). Its more of a platformer. Albeit a really good one. And yes, the PAL version is STUPID rare and costs 2x the amount of money the JP version does.

I don't have a Saturn or an SG-1000. Other than that I have them all, heh. I need to get both of those one of these days. Or at least a Dyna or a Mark III or something that will play SG-1000 games.
Oh, just a heads up oneironama:
Keio Flying Squadron 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Super Tempo
I love Super Tempo, it definitely picks up greatly after the second level and is HILARIOUS... but Keio Flying Squadron 2 is simply amazing. Hence why I bought the JP and the PAL versions.

I used to have three domestic Saturns. I now have two, kind of. I gave one away, one broke, but there's two in the house. There's also our Japanese Saturn. Unfortunately, since I moved to CA, I have been unable to find any of my domestic units.
This sucks a lot of balls. Dozens, perhaps.
Yes... I imagine a lack of Saturns would suck greatly. :frown:
Yes... I imagine a lack of Saturns would suck greatly. :frown:
Indeed it does, and for a variety of reasons.
1. My roommate has never played games like "Panzer Dragoon Saga", the Saturn Shining games, and maybe not even "Sonic R", but I'm not so sure about that last one. She has played "Astal" for sure and I think she's played "NiGHTS", but again, uncertain.
2. Outside of wanting to show her the aforementioned games, I want to play them again myself, along with other games in my decent collection.
3. Having only a collection of modern systems connected to my TV (the oldest one being a PS2) makes me sad.

I was unaware of this. This does, indeed, need to be corrected. Have you tried SSF? Needs a kinda decent CPU, but it plays original discs, and most of the time it's as good as the real thing.

My computer was recently upgraded, and as of current, it rox sox. Iit's an Athlon 64 X2 system with a 320MB 8800GTS, 2GB of RAM, and other goodies. 'Course, the 8800GTS is still so new that it (and all of its 8800 brethren) have tons of compatibility issues with older programs/games. So that's not quite so rocking.
I'll give emulation a spin. Since my Saturn discs are always with me, I have them, even though I don't have the system(s). They're right next to my computer as a matter of fact, so this must have been a destined development!
Frogacuda
04-22-2007, 07:16 PM
You'll have 60fps rock solid easy. As long as you have an Athlon64 you'll get decent speed, but SSF supports dual core, so if you have that you're golden.
If you need a hand finding anything or getting it working, just hit me up. Monique must be educated!

Hey, I just had an idea: would it be possible to post a list of Saturn imports that are fairly easy to play through? I think that would help some of us out, since many Japanese games are either in English or very easy to figure out. Whaddaya think?
One title that comes to mind is Linkle Liver Story - I hear that's very easy to pick up and play. Now a Sakura Taisen or Princess Crown on the other hand...
Princess Crown isn't too bad non-Japanese reading people. It just leaves a lot to be desired in the gameplay for me. Beautiful game though. And there's even some really good guides for it.
And... I think all the JP imports I listed are the easy to pick and play imports worth checking out. :) I'm sure I missed a handful, but I did do the list off the top of my head so :p

Hey I'm curious 'Professor Saturn': (lol) if you HAD to choose, which would it be: ThunderForce V or Radiant Silvergun?
Frogacuda
04-22-2007, 07:46 PM
I would say without hesitation RSG, and I suspect jp will concur.
Radiant Silvergun kills Thunder Force V and pisses on it.
Seriously, if you want some GOOD Tecno Soft gaming, go for one of the Thunder Force packs or Blast Wind or Hyper Duel. TFV is the worst shooter they put on the Saturn IMO. Mind you, its a fairly good game, but IMO its nowhere near up to par with Tecno Soft's other offerings except like, the first two Thunder Force games. But Thunder Force III, AC, IV >>>>>>>>>>>>>> TFV
But of course, Radiant Silvergun is my favorite game ever made and it is my belief that no company ever has or ever will make a shmup that is half as good. ;)
And honestly, you would want to play the almost the entire Tecno Soft shooter library before TFV, as it contains homages to TFIV, Hyper Duel, and Blast Wind.
I reviewed Blast Wind and Hyper Duel here though. They are here:

I will also say that Blast Wind is one of my favorite 2D shooters ever made... even though everyone always bitches about it being too easy. But IMO its music is second to NONE!!!!

It is my opinion that the oft considered "most rare" Saturn game, Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru, definitely shows that before they died Time Warner Interactive of Japan was only just beginning to bloom into a truly genius developer. Personally, I enjoy the game because it definitely has an almost "Treasure homage" feel to it without being a complete and utter worthless rip-off a la Panzer Bandits or Gunner's Heaven. Though truly, the boss fights in Taromaru somewhat eclipse those found in the Treasure games and the pacing is a bit less sporatic. Mind you, the solid gameplay of a Treasure title really sets it above its cousin (Taromaru), but there is a lot to be said for a game that comes so close to the bar Treasure has raised so high.
That said, I would now like to turn my attention to the underrated shoot-em-up title "Planet Joker". Truly an exquisite journey through the very anals of high class "shmup" (as our friends across the sea would call them!) production. From the very first level you feel like you're in a mind-blowing mecha-anime, fighting off the forces that are ravaging the fair... ocean. And once you hit land only to fight off the sinister first boss, a very Tonka bulldozer that freezes the very soul the player, you know you're in for a treat. I don't know which part I liked better: Scaling a building to fight a giant red mech or scaling a building to fight a giant blue mech. At any rate, both instances were pure gaming BLISS! and not to be missed out on by any fans of sho-... nay, any fans of GAMES period. Also, the creative change of the camera system at the final boss was sheer genius, and really kept me on my toes. But it definitely presented the final battle in a sense completely unlike any any shooter had imparted to me previously! I mean, I felt like I was BEHIND the mech, guiding its movements via a pad and buttons, or in my case keys on a keyboard. I really felt connected to the pilot of my mech, and when the final battle was over... I admit it, I wept. I wept like a man that has sat upon a cucumber. What a game!

has anyone ever seen this sega saturn site before? http://www.satakore.com/ I think a lot is in French but they have a huge database of information for every single saturn game.

Well Frog, I certainly agree with the first part but I cannot concur with the second part. Planet Joker is a horrible game and no mortal should have to play it. Or immortal for that matter.
Thanks for being on topic though, I do appreciate it within this Saturn thread o' great.

Keeping this thread on topic by any means neccessary. :sneaking:
You'll have 60fps rock solid easy. As long as you have an Athlon64 you'll get decent speed, but SSF supports dual core, so if you have that you're golden.
If you need a hand finding anything or getting it working, just hit me up. Monique must be educated!
After some tweaking, I've got it up and running. Evidently, it doesn't like my brand-new DVD-/+R drive (despite its being ATAPI compatible), but I have an older DVD-ROM in my computer too. That works fine. Whew.
In-game, it runs at 60fps easily, sometimes nudging up a little. On menus, the FPS skyrockets and the music and everything goes into hyperdrive, but that's okay -- I know why it does. I have bilinear filtering and all that good stuff on. Nice to know that PDS runs with "CD Block No Wait" active, too.
I have the OST, but actually playing the game and hearing the music again is a thrill. I admit, I'm a bit spoiled by PSX emulators that let you up the resolution and apply AA (or at least pseudo-AA), but I'm not going to let 32-bit era graphics scare me away from my beloved Saturn games. If I can play 8-bit (and sometimes older) games still, there's nothing preventing me from enjoying this. A fancier look would be a gift, but I don't need it.
Besides, I could never complain about a successful emulation of the complicated Sega Saturn architecture. This is most fantastic.

That doesn't support any filtering, and it shouldn't go above 60fps either. Go to the quick config and make sure you have it set for highest compatibility/accuracy.
As for emulation that "enhances" the original, it's a double edged sword. I actually have my PSX emu set up for 100% accuracy with no enhancements. It always improves some things, but other things look messed up because they aren't designed for higher res or for filtering or whatever.

Yes, I'm using SSF. It supports bilinear filtering. Under its options, on the "Screen" tab, is where the check box for it resides.
The in-game rendering appears to be locked at 60fps, which makes sense. Sometimes, it tips a little higher (such as 61 or 62), but it doesn't go crazy till I'm in the menus. That doesn't surprise me, as many games which have locked FPS ratings (or ceilings) don't enforce that in menus.

I've modified the registry settings for "Final Fantasy XI" to make it look fantastic, and in most cases, it is very beneficial. However, there are times when it shows the limitations of the game's engine to its visual detriment, too.

Radiant Silvergun kills Thunder Force V and pisses on it.
My that was descriptive... ^^;;
Seriously, if you want some GOOD Tecno Soft gaming, go for one of the Thunder Force packs or Blast Wind or Hyper Duel. TFV is the worst shooter they put on the Saturn IMO.RLY? Why have I been hearing that TFV & RS were THE shooters to have for SS? Granted, between the both of them I went with RS (thankfully), but I always planned to grab TFV as well eventually. Now you're saying bypass it altogether...wow. I may be new here, but you really seem to know your stuff, I think I can trust your word. Never heard of Blast Wind...thx for the link.
Even TF 4 is better, seriously?
Frogacuda
04-24-2007, 12:25 AM
Well TF4 is a damned fine game, so that's no insult.
I find TFV sorely overrated, though. Second only to Einhander in undeserved hype.
I'm sure jp would reccomend Soukyuugurentai as one of his top picks. I'm fond of Metal Black and Salamander 2 as far as side-scrollers go.
Oneironama,
Make the next Saturn shooter you get Game Tengoku aka The Game Paradise (sound familiar? ;)). Seriously, its an amazing game.
And yeah, TFIV is an amazing game. I wouldn't say pass up TFV all together, just make sure you've got a solid foundation in Tecno Soft's shooters before you play it so you can actually appreciate it and geek out over all the homages. ;)
For shmups on the Saturn I'd say:
Radiant Silvergun
Batsugun
Battle Garegga
Soukyuugurentai
Blast Wind
Game Tengoku
Hyper Duel
Metal Black
Cotton 2
Cotton Boomerang if you really LOVED Cotton 2
Gokujyo Parodius Da! Deluxe Pack
Sexy Parodius
Thunder Force Gold Pack 1
Thunder Force Gold Pack 2
Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus
Gradius Deluxe Pack
Detana Twinbee Yahho Deluxe Pack
There's more, but those are my personal favs. My top 5 would be:
1. Radiant Silvergun
2. Batsugun
3. Blast Wind
4. Hyper Duel
5. Game Tengoku
So... yes. There you go.
Though FYI Blast Wind is stupid rare and has become stupid expensive lately, almost comparable to Radiant Silvergun. And these days Hyper Duel is ABOVE Radiant Silvergun in price.

Battle Garrega is a love or hate game.
I'd also have to throw in Dodonpachi. That Saturn version isn't the best port (but it's not bad, either), but it is probably the game most widely hailed as the best shooter of all time. jp doesn't like it because he's weird, but it bears mentioning, regardless.
I also find Game Paradise merely "alright" but it's humorous theme and style are hard to resist.
Game Tengoku has some of the most solid control I've ever seen in a shmup. And the scoring system is very good. And the Saturn mode is just awesome.
DDP is cool, I just don't put it up there amongst my favorites. I've drowned hundreds of hours in Radiant Silvergun, Blast Wind, Hyper Duel, Batsugun, and Game Tengoku. I played DDP for a day, almost 1CC'd it, and haven't touched it since.
Still shouldn't be doing that. Make sure Auto Field Skip and VSync are both on and play in fullscreen and it should stop.
Silly as it may sound for me to ask, how does one run it in full screen? I imagine it's one of the function keys, or something relatively simple that I haven't pressed yet, much like F5's controlling the scanline.

I'd say that's a rather well-rounded list, wouldn't you? It may be a bit RPG heavy, but oh well.

I dunno, I never see it talked about, and I think its an excellent classic style RPG.

Funny you mention that. I was considering placing it in the spot of "Shining the Holy Ark", but ultimately decided not to since it's kind of short. Absolutely excellent game, though I felt it didn't tie up enough loose ends.
I've already decided to replay that one after I'm done with "Panzer Dragoon Saga".
DarthArcturus

Yeah, Albert Odyssey's price spiked out of nowhere. One day it was a $20 game the next it was $50+. That shit was insane.
And I agree Raz, I kept thinking the game would playout throughout everyone's entire life... and then it just... ended. I guess I shoulda seen that coming though given that I was like, level 70 something by the time all was said and done. But goddamn some of those final fights were bullshit. Out of sheer curiosity, did anyone else here absolutely love Albert Odyssey?ME! = D
Yeppa, even though some of those final fights were a royal pain! (one took me almost an hour, good thing Gryzz saved our @$$e$ =P) Still luv it to death, you should all know I'm a sucker for a great soundtrack though, especially if it's orchestrated. I especially adore the airship theme -you can check it out here if ya like: http://media.putfile.com/-Flying-in-a-Fish--Albert-Odyssey-Gaiden
(hope that link still works...)
Still, I can only recommend it to folks who can enjoy a truly classic-style RPG like the ones you'd find on SNES. There, I said it! lol
Loveable loveable game, just not innovative or daring in any way. Did have a pretty memorable cast though, that can make or break an RPG for me, and that's why Lunar 1 & 2 will always be among my faves- I cared for those characters like they were flesh and blood.
any of these lists work. There are just so many AAA titles on the saturn :D (dragon force is only average though) *cries*

Naxat Soft made it. They made a lot of really good stuff on the PC-Engine/PC-Engine Duo (most notably they made Nexzr, which, IMO, is one of the best shmups ever made and the best shmup on the PC-Engine CD).
The movies in it are alright, but the gameplay is horrid. I have a review of it coming shortly, I'm missing ONE picture, so as soon as I can brave the game again I'll post the review. :p

I remember when I first played the game then I acually started to look at the graphics. You could tell that they used more than the 64 colors. The awesome pseduo light sourcing. And the scaling looked jsut as good as anything on the SNES. Enemie actually turned around. You kicked up dust as you flew. BRoke windows in that one stage I think that was sum kinda transparenct effect.
Bruhaha69
05-22-2007, 02:14 PM
O yeah. Tons of line scrolling, the lighting you're talking about in the forest stage was sweet as well. I think there were transparencies from the light in the caves too (coming through the ceiling).....I could be wrong, but I think they are transparent.
The distored water when you fight that Octopus thing was also cool. God damn, even the doves flying in the background over all the lovely layers of tree parallax were awesome.
Such great color usage in that game.

a) Wipeout
b) Norse by Norsewest: Lost Vikings 2
c) VR Virtua Racing (I can’t be the only person on this planet that still likes virtua racing...)
Thanks again for adding Mr. Bones! :SM34
Also, has anyone ever played either of these two domestic games:
a) Cyber Speedway
b) Bubble Bobble: also featuring Rainbow Islands
I’m really interested in the second one, but I don’t know.
This list has been great for narrowing down those tough buying decisions; it’s hard keeping track of all those A & B games and this serves as a wonderful reminder. I saw Keio 2 PAL version going for less than $20 on ebay(!), but I’m trying not to splurge. Who knows if I’ll ever be able to find it for that price again…
…I think I’ll try sticking to US games for awhile. Some of my favorites have been "borrowed" indefinitely (Astal, teh Panzers, X-mas NiGHTS, Bakubaku…) so I’ll probably start by replacing those. Then I can make my way to games I never got around to like Shinobi Legions and Blazing Heroes aka Mystaria, which I keep hearing was actually pretty good and not so blasé lately.
PS: This settles it; imma pickin up Super Tempo! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=4vlSCTQXiRQ) :p

Cyber Speedway is pretty good. I remember playing it when Wipeout was getting all the rave reviews. The tracks are fun and the controls are tight.....mush less floaty than Wipeout. Of course, it doesn't look too pretty these days. If you like racers, it's worth it. I thought it got crapped on a bit too much and deserved more praise than it received.

Am I the only person who thoroughly enjoys cyber speedway?
Awesome soundtracks, only nights had a better one IMO.

Cyber Speedway is an awesome game and one of my favorite games of the type. Still have it in the collection in fact.
Quantum Redshift on the xbox kinda reminded me of that game.
Funny you should bring up Super Tempo oneironama, that, Keio Flying Squadron 2, Astra Superstars, and Planet Joker are the games I currentlly have pictures for to do reviews. I've just been lazy about writing 'em is all... :opa:
Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands is good stuff. Honestly, I prefer the NES port of Bubble Bobble since it had 20 extra levels and infinite continues (the one on the Satty is arcade perfect, no unlimited continues, thus its nigh on impossible) but the Saturn one is still good, and the bass in the music is just nuts.
Rainbow Island is good to know.
Also keep in mind that the third entry in the Bubble Bobble series (Bubble Symphony) is also available on the Saturn, albeit will be a bit pricey. It too is a good game. As is Mizubaku Adventure (Liquid Kids Adventure), though Mizubaku IS the rarest officially released game on the Satty (2000 copies as I understand it, 3000 less than Crows which is 2500 less than Taromaru).
I thought Norse by Norsewest was on the list. Great puzzle game. Will definitely add it.
As for Virtua Racing... mmm... that was a horrible port if memory serves me correctly. But I'll look into it again.
Cyber Speedway is a really cool game too. I'll add that as well. I think I've already got Scorcher X on there too (kinda similar futuristic racer).
One US game that I LOVED if Space Hulk. Even though I've never gotten CLOSE to beating it, or just about ANY of the missions, its still good stuff. Nothing better than hearing your team screaming out in terror while you're chilling waiting for the aliens to get to you... :scurred:

I used to have the first Space Hulk game, and I loved that. Never did really play much of the second one (the one on Saturn/PSX/3DO)

Thank you both and Newport for the feedback. I'll have to add CS to the list.

As for the reviews, just take your time, we're all busy beavers here! Looking forward to reading them. :D
Space Hulk...I vaguely recall that name. Time to hit up my sites...
