View Full Version : Sega games that never made it home

In keeping with the other thread, let's talk about the Sega arcade games that get left in the arcades, or received only very poor home ports.

Scud Race/Super GT: I considered this to be the true follow up to Daytona, and the third part of the Virtua Racing/Daytona trilogy. When this hit the arcades in 1996 it was the most graphically impressive game I'd ever seen. The force feedback wheel was great, too. I still play it every chance I get.

A.B. Cop: This was a really awesome over-the-top chace action superscaler, a little like Chase HQ. Really good game, but Sega pretends like they didn't make it.

Enduro Racer: This got a couple of alright ports on European computers, but it deserves better. The Master System version was more or less a completely different game. I like this game better than Hang On, and it's one of my favorite racing games of the 80s.

Harley Davidson LA Riders:Along with Emergency Call Ambulance, this game was really the beginning of Sega's more open-ended and creatively structured racing games that peaked with Crazy Taxi. It was immensely successful, but like most Model 3 games, never made it home.

I'll post more later, but share some of yours.

Harley Davidson LA Riders not making it home really doesn't make sense. That game is always in any arcade I see, and people are always playing it.

Jambo! Safari - I think they should make a Wii version. I can picture the controller working well.

SWAT - It's possible Midway owns the North American rights but this is one of the cooler Sega/Coreland games that didn't get ported home.

Spatter - Great maze chase game.

Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder - This is so much better than the GA sequels we got on Genesis.

The first game that comes to mind...

PLANET HARRIERS - I played this in the arcades with my wife (and brother when she wasn't available), and we beat it a couple of times before the arcade got rid of it! :| I was PRAYING for an online co-op version of the game, but I've pretty much given up on that dream... Someday I'll buy the arcade machine when I have more room (and money), but until then, I cry a little on the inside when I think of all the people who missed out on this SUPER RARE arcade game that was a VERY worthy sequel to my favorite game ever (Space Harrier :p )!

Another game that didn't get a good port... like... EVER, is...

Quartet - Man, this is one of my most played arcade games of the 80's! My 2 brothers and I would hang out at Putt-Putt and just play this game as long as we were there! The PS2 Sega AGES collection has a port of Quartet 2 on the disc, and that's nice... but come on... It's called Quartet for a reason... GIVE US THE FREAKIN' FOUR PLAYER GAME!!! Stupid Sony only putting 2 controller ports on the PS2 (This will FOREVER piss me off)! I am 99% positive that had they put 4 ports on the machine, then the Sega AGES version would have been the 4 player Quartet instead of the 2 player Quartet 2! :(

Another one that I don't know how well it would work on home consoles, but I absolutely LOVED in the arcades is...

Top Skater - This came out around the peak of my skateboarding days, so I would spend all my money on this game (and I was freakin' awesome at it too X-D ), and then I'd go skateboarding with my friends after the arcade closed! It was a great game, but I can certainly understand why this one never made it home.

*edit*

After seeing NeoZeedeater's username, I couldn't help but think of another arcade game that never got the lovin' on consoles like it should have...

Shadow Dancer - OH MY GOD!!! Shinobi with a dog is one of the coolest ideas for a game EVER!!! They work perfectly together, and I LOVED the arcade game... I liked the home Genesis game alright, but it was COMPLETELY different than the arcade game. This is one I'd still love to have!

Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder is one of my favorite arcade beat em ups. We got a crappy Saturn fighter instead of this awesome game

Spider-Man: The Video Game is another great beat em up with those cool platformer style levels. That was a great idea for a game like this. I loved those frikkan levels.

Super GT/Scud Race was an awesome racing game that I thought for SURE we'd get on the DC. No love there. I'd still like a home version. I still play it at the beach (or used to....hope it's still there for my return)

Moonwalker Arcade would have been a great multiplayer home game. I would have even taken a watered down Genesis version. I thought it was great.

Gunblade would have been cool, too, but not having the giant gun takes a little away from it.

Gunblade NY & L.A. Machinegins:

Holy flying monkeyballs. I loved this game. I would stand on the machine like Rambo or Ventura fromm Predator and use One arm to hold the gun and fire. PURE VISERAL ACTION! THIS SHOULD HAVE COME HOME!!!!!

Harley Davidson & L.A. Riders:

Can someone explain this one too me? Really. Honestly.

Planet Harriers:

Is Sega TRYING to suck? If so they're doing a bang up job. This game was FUN! WITH A CAPITAL PH. FOR PHANTASTIC!!!

Shadow Dancer got a couple alright ports on the Amiga. Even the SMS one is good considering the hardware. But it definitely deserves a proper arcade port in this day and age.

Don't forget SpikeOut!

Where's our SpikeOut SEGA, mmm? lol

Daytona 2 would've been SO nice on DC...and OMG I remember the arcade ShadowDancer AND Moonwalker! OMG those were SO unbelievable, couldn't stop playing them! XDDD

Oh, this isn't SEGA but I'll say it anyway: Battletoads the arcade game. The only BT game I ever played that let you use all 3 toads SIMULTANEOUSLY...FINALLY!!!

Not the same as the arcade ones, though.

Daytona 2 deserved a home port, but I do think Super GT was better overall. I didn't like Daytona 2's soundtrack, and the Easy track sucked.

Air Rescue desrves a mention. It was a spirtual successor to Choplifter, and I had heard it was meant as a choplifter sequel but changed because Sega no longer had the rights. I don't know if that's true, but it was a nifty game, and it should have gotten a Saturn port or something.

ThunderBlade also needs a better port. The only really faithful port was the X68000 one, and even that wasn't arcade perfect. This was a hugely successful game, and I don't know why it hasn't gotten put on a retro complilation yet.

what was different from the xbox and arcade version?

Totally different game. The Xbox one wasn't a port at all.

Oh, for a recent one, gotta mention Virtua Cop 3. One of my favorite light gun games.

Damn, I never got to play Virtua Cop 3. It looked sweet as hell. I think Virtua Cop may be my favorite arcade gun game.

Planet Harriers

I feel rather fortunate to have played that in an arcade when it was a fresh release. Unfortunately, I haven't played it since then, and I doubt there's anywhere around here where I can. Little Tokyo doesn't have as many awesome arcades as you'd expect.

"Top Skater" was a title I played much, back during my crazier DDR days. Inbetween an hour or so straight of stomping, I'd play a few rounds of "Top Skater" to cool down. Quite a blast.

I loved how you grabbed the giant rats by the crotch and just started punching them. That is a gratifying beatdown.

How does the original Spikeout compare to the Xbox game? Same gameplay, lesser graphics, different levels?

From PopCulture Shock.

Several years ago, back in the golden years of arcade gaming, the infamous Sega AM2 produced the first networked 3D brawler game called Spikeout on the Model 3 arcade board.
The golden years; not to make myself sound like an old fart, but those unfortunate not to be around the arcade scene in those years sadly missed the pinnacle of arcade gaming. At the time, despite the fierce competition from other impressive games, Spikeout stood out and wowed the audience with its brute force slugfest power trip fighting. In addition, one of the key features was making use of the fiber optic cable to connect three extra arcade cabinets together to enable dedicated full screen four players action. This innovation signalled a departure from the bastardisation of single screen multiplayer gameplay.

I'm surprised that Eric Quakenbush hasn't revisited this concept on the DS or somewhere else. I'd really like to see how this would have played.
