I came accross a recently released demo for a project attempting to recreate the Sonic that never was, Sonic Xtreme. For a homebrew Sonic project it seems to be coming along pretty nicely. Chris Senn, the game's original designer is working on his own revival, but this seems more like an attempt to piece together what was there than to continue the work anew.

Kinda interesting at least.

I was following the Chris Senn version for a while, and it's pretty fascinating. For those who don't know, if you want to read more about it, check the official forum: http://www.senntient.com/cgi-local/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Xtreme&number=13&DaysPrune=1000&LastLogin=

Kurisu is Chris, by the way. He's discussed the other remake on the forums I believe (and if he hasn't, other people have). I know there's more information about it floating around somewhere.

Hope they don't get sued.

Sega have never issued a C&D against a fan game, or an emulator, or any other fan related projects. They're one of the few companies that don't have their heads up their asses there.

...anybody download that demo? I'd try it if not for this slow-as-molasses 56K...

aww, poor oneironama is on dial-up? Do you still install games from punch cards, too?

I didn't like the demo. I'm not sure if it was my computer or not but it moved so slow it didn't feel like sonic

Sonic ran rather fast for me, and the game reminded me of "Bug!", though with a quicker pace (naturally). For a PC remake-of-sorts of a defunct Saturn release, I'm not going to complain. It didn't offer the sense of speed that modern 3D Sonic titles do, but this shouldn't be judged against them.

However, almost everywhere he went, Sonic was barely able to get up to full speed before he'd be stopped, and there's no real excusing that -- if they want this remake to be widely accepted, they will have to change that in future level designs.

My computer has a 320MB 8800 GTS, 2MB of RAM and a dual processor, so if you're having slow performance, it might be a real resource hog. I didn't look into it and wasn't running anything else while I was playing.

1.6 GHZ Radeon 9800 pro. 512 RAM. I need a new processor, and I probably had to much running like usual.

^if it didn't work well for you i'm not even gonna attempt to run it on this bad boy...and i mean bad, as in NOT meaning good!

The demo's neat although a full game would need much better level design like Raz said since hitting an edge constantly disrupts the speed. I love the music, too.

Frogacuda

Yeah, the music is the actual soundtrack intended for the original.

Agreed about the level design. I think this demo is more of a proof-of-concept at this point.

Hey, I might as well mention what I've got. For all I know, the game could've been poorly programmed and run like crap on anything except higher end rigs. Glad to hear that's not the case.

P.S. Even if only for now, my computer still runs faster than yours. :chick:

Seeing as how my computer presently won't even turn on, I'm not impressed.

My Crysis rig will be coming this week, and it will rock. How much you ask?

Yes, that much.

What's your whole setup going to be? Are you going to have a C2D?

Your computer will definitely own mine, at that point. I wanted a C2D, but couldn't afford one, so I have an Athlon 64 X2. It's not bad by any means, but certainly not better than a C2D.

I... want to play this on a Saturn.

Otherwise I'm kinda like... meh.

I kinda see why Sega scrapped this cuz it's not much fun at all. Sega would've been better off ditcihng the whole 3D thing anyways and just goin with a full on 2D game.

I was reading a Cheat magazine yestertday and they made a good point that Sonic best games were 2D on the Genesis.

Well I think SEga should ditch the whole 3D look and go back to 2D. I don't think it's possible to to have a perfect camera system with Sonic unless you make it a slow paced MArio style game.

So the real Sonic Xtreme prototype that was sold a while back is finally publically released.

It's.... not really that interesting. Small fraction of a level, no enemies, not much to do. But hey, at least we can play it.
