So I saw it tonight....pretty entertaining. I don't understand why they made the story so damn confusing. I swear every character changes sides several times for some tradeoff between some other character that ends up just making the trade off useless 10 min later in the film. But Depp is still so fun to watch, and the rest of the characters have their moments too (even the monkey!) The final action stuff was great lots of fun and beats anything Shrek 3 and Spiderman 3 did. I like the ending to the film as well. overall I'd give it a 3/4 stars.

I read the ''spoiler'' information and it was pretty vague... it has the tone which you would expect from a review.

still, i'd prefer NOT to know that about the character allegiances being shifting as they were... now I will be expecting everyone in the film to change sides. it's not the end of the world though... if more revealing had been disclosed, that would be reason for alarm.

yeah I suppose that part was pretty borderline, but pirates are never to be trusted!

I was forced to see this movie yesterday but it was ok but since ihaven't seen the first 2 I had no clue WTF was goin on. BTW why the does Sparrow move his hands around in a feminine manner?

Advocate
05-27-2007, 01:31 PM
Cause that's how Pirates roll.

In all seriousness. If you didn't know. Depp drew inspiration for Sparrow from a few people. He took his speech and mannerism from Keith Richards and Pepe Lepue.

Several real-life people have been named as inspiration for Depp's interpretation of Jack Sparrow, including Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. Depp has stated that he imagines pirates as being like the rock stars of their day. Cartoon characters Pepe LePew and Bugs Bunny were also inspirations, as well as classic comedy actors such as Groucho Marx.
The part earned Depp an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, a rarity for a comic performance. The nomination also was the first for Best Actor in a Leading Role for a Disney film.

Depp says that some of his inspiration for his role as Jack Sparrow was Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. "I started trying to figure out pirates of the 18th century, and sort of what it was all about," he says. "Initially you think money, and all that. I think it also had much more to do with freedom. To be out there, moving forward. So I sort of thought that pirates would be the rock and roll stars of the 18th century, you know? Then, when you think of rock and roll stars, the greatest rock and roll star of all time, the coolest rock and roll star of all time, in my opinion, is Keith Richards. Hands down."

Another influence on the character of Jack Sparrow was more animated – Pepe Le Pew. Depp says, "What I loved about Pepe Le Pew was this guy who was absolutely convinced that he's a great ladies man. And he's a skunk. Watching those cartoons, this guy falls in love, deeply falling in love with this cat. The cat clearly despises him, but Pepe Le Pew takes it as sort of a, 'She's just playing hard to get. She's shy. Poor thing.' I always loved a character like that, just blinders no matter what the actual reality is happening around him. This guy sees only what he wants to see. Pepe Le Pew was the kind of character who always was able to run between the rain drops. He'd just always make it through."

Prior to a few days ago, I hadn't seen any of the movies aside from some of the first, so I marathoned the trilogy so I could check out the third one on Saturday.

It was long as hell, but I loved it. I think the second and third are almost 100% different in every way from the first one, but I really appreciate how imaginative they are- I'm a sucker for Davy Jones and his crew. I think, more than anything, the final action set-piece in this one won me over. It was so incredibly epic and well done. Verbinski is great at handling the geography of these massive scenes.

That last bit isn't a spoiler in any sense of the word, but I know how you guys are. :p

(please excuse my grammatical errors. I am a bit pissed off when writing this. I'll explain in the spoilers.)

I'd first like to say ...

HEY GUYS I FINALLY SAW IT!

So, this movie was way better than 2. Dead man's plot lines. It was nice that they tied up all the loose ends part 1 and 2 left wide open like a 7 year old running out the door to met their friends. I didn't mind the switch sides at all since all of the PotC movies do that. I loved the cinematography. The sound was a bit muffled, but that cause we saw this in a craptacular theater and the black folk behind us would not shut the fuck up.

I mean really can you not fucking explain the entire series to your douchebag g/f who never saw any of the films. SERIOUS! She was like "I's never saw none. All's I be knowin' is like Its about some dirty white people on a ship. TEEE HEEE!!" I was about to bitch slap the ho. Oh and it wasn't like a whisper noooo. WHY THE FUCK WOULD THAT HAPPEN. THAT WOULD MEAN THESE PEOPLE HAVE RESPECT! Take her to the break up or some niggerific movie like "Are we fucking there yet part assmunch twelve". SHUT UP! Oh hey I like the fucking fact you drank a 40 in the theater too, fucktard. Jesus Christ if your going to shout OHHH OR OH SHIT THAT WAS AWESOME. Do that fucking shit at home watching it on your 15 inch Daewoo on your fucking prosonic DVD player you got from food stamps from the supermarket. SHUT YOUR BLACK ASS UP! Oh and I'm not leaving out the white folks. Bringing your rugrat fucknutz. Yeah good call there asshole. Yeah the movie is 3 hours long. I guess you can't figure out 164 minutes is fucking 2 hours and fucking 44 minutes. I don't need to hear "Mommy i have to pee pee." All through the film. Pick up the kid and take him/her to the restroom. Just do it! Or heres a fucking brilliant idea. JUST FUCKING HIT ME. Why not wait till it comes out on DVD! WHOA!!! WTF! I SWEAR TO JESUS CHRIST. IF I HAD A GUN. I WOULD HAVE SHOT THEM ALL! HEY THEY PUT THAT SILENCE THING ON THE SCREEN FOR A REASON! SHUT YOUR FUCKING PIE HOLE!!!! THE FILM IS TOO LONG FOR KIDS. AND TEENAGERS THIS IS NOT THE FUCKING TIME TO CHECK VOICEMAIL OR TEXT MESSAGES, OR WORK ON YOUR HOMEWORK. DO THAT FUCKING SHIT AT HOME! I hate the public and I hope they all die horrible deaths.

Back to the movie. I loved it. The end battle made me want to pop in Soul Caliber 2 and play against Cervantes. I could swear the music while they were in the maelstrom firing the cannons was from the SC2. I liked the build up. I liked how Jack went a bit crazy and started to talk to himself and everyone around him acted like WTF? The telescope jealousy was hilarious. Everyone pulling out their guns including the chimp was a riot.

Oh and the Chimp cannon FTW!

I liked that finally Gore Verbinski liked up to his name and had some crazy shit happen. Davey Jones killing a man with his tentacles=awesome! The sword fights were well done. The SFX were top notch.

5/5. Best summer flick thus far. THANK GOD FOR THAT!

Well, it's been some time, but here's some thoughts of the movie (since Advocate has been dying for me to share):

First off, I think the movie is heads above the second. Why? This movie is paced better (It's long, but I didn't get bored. I got bored with the second), the characters seem more polished up, Jack is a lot crazier (he seemed rather...tame or...insubstancial in the second to me), which is great, and the action scenes weren't overdone (i.e. the silly windmill wheel battle that went on for a few minutes too many), but were cool to watch.

The return of Barboza also was a plus. Geoffry (sp) Rush's sarcasm and presence fills a rather large gap the last movie had. Davy Jones is an interesting villain, but Jack didn't spend a lot of time with him, and Will isn't as...well, awesome, sorry. Barboza gives the movie a lot more oomph, and pulls it up from the depths the second plunged all too often into.

The effects were better (outside of the awkward Callspo [sp]-giant thing...the crabs afterwards were neat, but the transformation before that was weird), which really came across with Davy's various battles (I loved when he slaughtered that hencemen with his tentacles...so creepy!), the chaos of the ship fight near the end, and the piercing of Chow Yun-Fat's character by the ship's wood (who, by the way, felt quite...well, extra in this movie. Was he really needed? His makeup was cool, though). Good stuff.

The movie isn't faultless. I'd need to rewatch it to nitpick it further, but I think it wasn't all that bad. I even can say I enjoyed it. It's still below the original in terms of overall awesomeness, but it's not as bad as I thought it could have been.
