I was inspired recently.

Pans Labrynth 10/10

I usually dislike movies in Spanish, but this one was VERY good.

The Fountain 9/10

Great visual, though the story was a bit of a put-off at times.

I actually want to see the Fountain so hearing you give it a 9/10 is good news for me.

I liked Pans a lot but I was expecting more of the fairy tale / fantasy stuff and instead I got an equal dose of fantasy and bloody reality.

Either way it is a sweet movie no doubt!

Hunter
06-28-2007, 02:27 PM
As I said, there are some things the story doesn't completely clear up, so it's a bit dissapointing, which is why I gave it a 9. Pans is probably a lot more enjoyable if you speak spanish. ;)

I really loved it. There's nothing I can think of to improve it. I gotta get the soundtrack.

Lately, I've watched:

Zoolander (odd coincidence) - 8/10 Funny, funny movie.
La Calvadier d"Eon V.1 (SP, anime) - 9/10 An interesting anime that has caught my attention. Great animation and a different storyline/setting help it stand out from the rest.
Monty Python & The Holy Grail - 9/10 First time I've seen it, but it's so kooky and weird it's awesome. I love the French taunting. It's the best. Killer Rabbit FTW!

That's about it for now.

I just watched the Fountain. Kinda confusing really and needs to be watched a few more times for me to really settle into what they were trying to convey there. But I will say the visual style was amazing and it really does pull at your heart strings. I give it an 8/10.

Solaris is a kind of similar movie in certain ways, mostly themes like love and loss. I can't believe you'd give it a 2/10. Its not what most people expect after reading the back or seeing the cover. I'd give it a 7/10 personally as I love the emotional aspects and the 2010 vibe it has.

I also bought The Score, Lemony Snicket's A series of Unfortunate Events and Enemy at the Gates all for 4.99 each while at BB yesterday so I'll be watching those over the next week or so.

Ghost Rider (skip it)

The Departed is one of my favorite movies to come out recently. 9/10

I got the Pan's Labirynth DVD (special edition even!) from work when some guy traded it in a month or so ago for like, $3, but I'm yet to watch it sadly. :frown:

Be prepared to read as it is subtitled. Not saying thats a bad thing but with a movie that grabs you so much visually its a shame you need to stare at the bottom of the screen to catch whats being said when you should be dropping your jaw at all the stuff going on above the words.

I give Pans an 8 out of 10.

Hunter
07-10-2007, 04:47 PM
lol. I didn't need the subtitles. Knowing Spanish FTW!!!

And I actually enjoyed Ghost Rider. :(

Of the stuff I have seen recently I'd give The Departed and 300 9/10's.

I'm sure some will disagree but those two really floored me in a bunch of ways and had me wanting to see them again and again.

Lets see of what I currently own on DVD I'd give the following 9+ ratings...

American Beauty
Batman Begins
Casino
Departed, The
Face Off
Goodfellas
Heat
L.A. Confidential
Road to Perdition
Ronin
Saving Private Ryan
Seven
Shawshank Redemption, The
Usual Suspects, The

Again thats of what I OWN on DVD and not in any way an all inclusive list of the best of the best as things like the Godfather etc would be on there too. So don't bust my bawlz too hard mmmm'kay? :p

Hunter

I just wanted a general idea of your taste in movies.

I agree with a few of your choices.

Newport420
07-10-2007, 05:55 PM
I don't know if that list gives a good idea of my "taste" in movies or not. Those are just flicks in my collection that I consider at the top of the "ratings" IMO. I really enjoy a lot of off beat comedies and such that though I enjoy a lot I would not give them a 9 or 10 in the grand scheme of things.

I'm sure some people disagree with my ratings and my taste.... but hey... to each his own right?

Oh yeah and I just realized I didn't have LotR on there. That trilogy is a 9.5/10 for me. :p

Edit: The extended versions of LotR of course.... only way to really enjoy them IMHO.

Wow, noticed I didn't post reviews for th last two. Let's see:

Identity - 7/10 - It was good until the ending, then it all fell apart.

Beast Machines - 8/10 - Oddly enough same as above, fell aprt in the ending. The story was great, but the execution of the ending was poor.

And to add on. I just watched Bridge to Terabithia. WOW, I'm shocked. I thought it was going to blow wads, but it was a GREAT movie. 9.3/10 Could have done with some better acting in some parts, but overall a very good movie.

DarthArcturus

On the Waterfront 10/10 first time I've seen it and I was amazed by everything about it.

The Color Purple 8/10 Very good movie by Spielburg that really moved me. Only thing I thought had some problems was the pacing and lost focus on the main character.

Yesss another place to talk about Transformers! Soundtrack for the animated movie is one of my favorites... they even threw a Weird Al Yankovic song on there!

Haha which reminds me that my biggest disappointment in the new live-action movie was the Soundtrack... they didn't even include the Transformers theme at all! Not even in the background or on the radio as a subtle little easter egg!

I don't think Bridge to Terrabithia was a 9.3/10 more like an 8 or so. It was kinda like Pans for me in that I expected more fantasy and got more reality instead. Definitely a great kids movie though. The part with the girl main character at the end was a bit shocking considering it was a Disney movie and all.

Hunter
07-16-2007, 02:03 PM
Yes, VERY shocking, I did not expect that at all. The problem with Terabithia was the marketing campaign. From what I understand, the directors and writers were NOT happy at all with Disney's marketing campaign, which takes only certain excerpts to try and make it look like Narnia or something, when it is NOT like that AT ALL.

In the end, I try not to judge things by what I expected, but what I got. Otherwise, I'd always be dissapointed. Terabithia was never meant to be percieved that way, just a dirty marketing trick on disnes part, and I don't think the film should lose points because of that.

Celebrant
07-16-2007, 02:39 PM
Wait, what was Terabithia actually like, if not a children's Narnia-clone?

Mister_Saturn
07-16-2007, 02:42 PM
House of Wax - An okay horror movie, kinda disappointed in how they took the occult part out, even though the original was kinda campy, and the sequel was plain retarded. *sigh* The way the people were killed off was interesting, and how they were turned into wax figures. However, my favorite screen was how Paris Hilton's character dies ~squee~ That turd was pwnt!

Its like a G version of Pan's Labrynth.

Newport420
07-16-2007, 02:50 PM
I'm not docking it points because of my expectations at all, just merely relating some dissapointment I had with the film is all.

I did think it was good. I believe my 8/10 conveys that I thought it was good. The acting and some of the cinematography held it back as well as some of the dialogue. It really wasn't one of those films striving to be all it could be (10/10).... in the end 8/10 seems like a solid rating to me. It accomplished what it was trying to do and did it well..... thus the score. Actually thats another weak point IMO..... the score (music).

Advocate
07-16-2007, 02:53 PM
I have actually yet to see any movie from last year. I just know from my expansive research into all films, that Terebithia was like a Pans Labrynth. And not that good.

Hunter
07-16-2007, 03:28 PM
It was no bad at all. It got positive reviews, and is rated Fresh on RT. You're right to some small degree, it has quite a few simliarities to Pan's Labrynth. It's not as good though, which you can see reflected in my scores.

As for the muscial score, yeah, it didn't stand out in any way.

Newport420
07-17-2007, 04:36 PM
A great score and a bit more of the fantasy sequences would have gone a long way too making Terrabithia better IMO.

Hunter
07-17-2007, 04:46 PM
Well, it was never meant to be a fantasy epic. But yeah, it could have done with a better score.

Finally got around to watching Standing in the Shadows of Motown. I had been meaning to watch this forever, but I was reminded of it by the other thread where we were talking about R&B.

Basically it's a documentary about the Funk Brothers, the Motown studio band that wrote and performed every one of Motown's hits from 1959 to 1973 and went largely uncredited. It's really shocking when you realize how all these different artists that came out of that scene were just a rotating cast of front men for one single band.

The movie starts off by pointing out that this band has had more #1 hits than the Beatles, Elvis, The Beach Boys, and the Rolling Stones combined, which is pretty staggering.

Anyway, I definitely recommend it.

Well I picked up 300 2-disc special edition, Pathfinder Uncut/Unrated, Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead yesterday at BB.

I had seen 300 twice in theaters and have been awaiting this release for quite some time. It was great to watch it on the 1080p plasma even if it was only a regular DVD in an up converting player. The extras disc has been cool so far. Interesting to see just how much history was actually in there and where Miller took a bit of poetic license too.

Pathfinder intrigued me from its previews. I loved Shaun of the Dead and decided to give Hot Fuzz a no look purchase based on SotD.

"Blades of Glory" takes a while to get going, but once it's started, it's a fun ride. It's also a very modern comedy, considering that it manages to dole out the gay jokes without being painfully stereotypical (meaning a gay person can actually laugh at them alongside a straight one). It also has a strange ending which vaguely reminded me of "Cheech & Chong's Next Movie", in that you'll either be amused by it or not.

I recommend it.

Outside of that, I haven't watched anything on DVD in a very long time. I have no idea what the last DVD I watched was.

Yeah, I enjoyed Troy though most people didn't. I'd say an 8 is about right.

lmao, I just checked out the plot outline for Grosse Point Blanke on IMDB. Sounds like a cool flick. Might have to check it out.

I just got Castle In the Sky and Dune - Directors Cut, from netflix, as well as the first disc of Stargate Season 10. I have yet to watch any of them.

Gross Pointe Blank is a GREAT movie with a GREAT soundtrack. 9/10

I watched Blades of Glory last night and I laughed MY FUCKING ASS OFF! No really I had to use duct tape to get it back on after the film. In all seriousness I was a bit worried that I had been suckered into buying another mediocre Will Ferrell movie (Taladega Nights really was just average IMO 6.5/10) but thankfully I was wrong. Between Will and Napolean D (sorry don't know the kids name by heart) they managed to light the screen on fire with their comic genius. I never would have thought you could make a movie this funny about figure skating.... I am glad I was wrong. This movie is chock full of laughs and I personally give it a 8.5/10. I'll only add one thing here in semi-jest..... I must warn Biff and others that they may experience significant "manwank" while watching this film..... you have been warned. :p

I'll agree with the Troy remarks too. I really enjoyed that movie. The intro scene where after teh fight Achilles is standing in front of the enemy army screaming "Is there no one else?!!!!!!!" Fucking epic I tells you.

Perhaps I am a little harsh... 7/10. It was decent and I did laugh but it really felt forced to me and unnatural. This movie was so much better IMO. For me Will Ferrel does his best work when he has another great person to work with. In Talladega it rested almost 100% on his shoulders. In BoG its 50/50 and the comic chemistry is perfect IMO.

Just picked up the following 4 movies for 3.99 at BB.

Pi (the symbol)
American Psycho - Uncut
Requim for a Dream
The Devils Rejects

I've seen American Psycho but I don't own a copy. The others I have heard good things about but have never seen them. Good thing I have a long weekend coming up. :)

I liked American Psycho. Probably a 7/10 for me. For me this is the movie that put Bale on the map as I don't recall anything from him prior and it stood out IMO. The parts where he has the hookers and is reviewing 80's music is equal parts hysterical and psycho IMO.

Besides at 3.99 each. Its hard to feel too ripped off IMO. Its why I bit on Pi and Requim. Cheap enough that even if I didn't really like them it was still OK by me money wise.

Blades of Glory - good flick 7.5/10
Apocalypto - better than I thought it would be 7/10
Hot Fuzz - I love those 2 guys 8.5/10
300 - love it 9.5/10

I figure I will comment on almost all of the other movies referenced here. :p

I thought Children of Men was a very good movie. I am a fan of Clive Owen. King Arthur, Sin City, Closer and Children of Men. I thought he was good in all of those movies.

I couldn't get through Talledega Nights. I was very disappointed in the first hour. Blech. I agree Will Ferrell is much better as part of a cast. See "Old School" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back". He was great in both of those.
Equilibrium is a great movie. Another actor I like was in that as well. Sean Bean., even though he wasn't in the entire movie.

Gross Pointe Blank is an excellent movie. Just one more actor I really like, John Cusack (I didn't like Identity either). I have a lot of his movies. Definitely see Gross Pointe Blank if you haven't. Jeremy Piven has a good role.

I enjoyed Troy as well. Eric Bana did a very good job, IMO. The battle scenes were great.

Hold on, Bad Boys II? WTF is that all about? :p Not that I should talk, I have plenty of movies in my collection that are questionable to most people.

Matrix Reloaded's chase scene was filmed on one section of man made highway and shot in both directions. The time total of the scene was 15 minutes ... it was also attached to a movie that bored the fuck out of everyone.

Blues Brothers chase scene I do not view as the same. But I will give you that. But it is a comedy so the stuff they did was more for hilarity.

---------
Bad Boys 2 the chase scene lasted for 30 minutes ... consisted of a chase on a above ground covered parking garage, a gun fight in the middle, and the final coup de grace ... a damn Tractor Trailer full of cars being tossed at a Ferrari at speeds of actual .. 60 miles an hour.

Agreed.

I'm currently watching "Eyeshield 21", which no one outside of anime and/or North American football buffs will likely care about. It's "Hajime no Ippo" ("Victorious Boxers"), except not as serious, and features a sport that's even less respected in Japan (so its characters must struggle to be taken seriously). Definitely enjoyable.

Anime, as a medium, is identical to live action cinema in its ability to convey storyline and emotion. Additionally, its ratio of crap to goodness is in favor of the abundant crap -- the same applies to live action film. This is not an insult, as I myself watch far more anime than anything else, but only a fool would say that it's the best genre of visual entertainment in the world. There is no "best".

Neither method is superior to the other, though if you live in a country where only one of the two dominates, naturally, you'll see less of the other and therefore have less reason to respect it.

I like anime because it's not limited by human actors and stunt men. They can draw whatever they want and make characters do whatever they want. The use of more and more CG and artificial people/scenes in movies just lends proof to what makes animation so great.

Evangelion is a great series with a "What-in-th-fucking-hell-was-that-crazy-ass-shit?" ending. You may think you understand whats going on but in the last few episodes and that finale movie or whatever they just take a left turn and dive right off the cliff with the story. Still love the series but they lost me at the end comprehension wise.

I have been watching more movie length anime and less series as I hate starting to buy a series and the realizing it sucks(Gantz anyone?). With the movie I can buy and then move on to something new. The series are investments of at least 100 bucks usually if not more. There are soem really great anime movies out there too. You don't even need to watch the series either.

Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell are my two favorites. The animation and visual style in Appleseed are second to none IMO. If your looking for great movie length anime and your not sure about most stuff I guarantee you that this movie will blwo you away.

BTW, about what you said about it ending blah, I was watching some extras, apparently they had already finished writing the entire season when they heard it was going to be cancelled, so that was understandable. Can't wait for the movies!!!

I haven't seen any of those shows, or Castle in The Sky. It's one of the only Ghibli films I haven't seen (Cagliostro, Totoro, Mononoke and Spirited Away are my favorites)

saw "the Illusionist" on DVD recently, WOW. Ed Norton is a marvelous actor.

I liked the Illusionist a lot. Laputa as well.

I watched Dead Ringers again. Really amazing film. Jeremy Irons was absolutely robbed for the oscar for that role (or rather two roles). I'm going to see Eastern Promises this weekend. More Cronenberg. Yay.

Yeah, Illusionist was a really great flick. Glad you enjoyed it.
I finally got around to checking out Lady in the Water, decent stuff. Also caught Thank You for Smoking, I liked it. It had a fun, morbid sense of humor.

If you're in the mood to be pissed off, I recommend Maxed Out. It's a pretty harsh documentary of the credit industry's predatory tactics.

The whole thing was well done. It reminds me of when Micheal Moore used to put out quality work.

Quick caveat before someone eats my asshole:

I haven't seen Sicko yet, so I cannot lump it into the previous comment. Once it hits DVD, I will give it a fair chance.

Sicko is the best thing Moore's ever done. Farenheit 9/11 sucked, nothing else he made bothered me.

I didn't like Kill Bill.

This is always an incorrect answer.

The only exception would be something like, "While an awesome movie in and of itself, I did not enjoy Kill Bill because as I was trying to enjoy it, I was being ass-raped by an HIV-positive Gamestop employee."

Matador - Fairly decent movie. Had its funny moments. Really weird pacing though.

Behind the Mask: Leslie Vernon - Basically the Shaun of the Dead of the slasher genre. Fucking awesome movie. Its a documentary about the people who choose a career in being a homicidal seemingly supernatural serial killer (such as Myers, Kruger, and Vorhees) and what all they have to go through to become the legends they are. So the whole thing follows this guy named Leslie Vernon and its just awesome. Sheer awesomeness. Hilarious, cheesy, and all around good.

I love Tarantino, but I think you need to be into the same kind of movies he's into (including a lot of 70s shlock) to appreciate some of what he does.

Anyone who doesn't like Kill Bill vol. 1 .. needs to perform hari kari and then douse themselves like the arab from Airplane and light themselves on fire. Except in Airplane he just exploded ... and the next scene to follow was ... ???

The Wind that Shakes the Barley. Story about Michael Collins and freeing Ireland from English rule. Girlfriend had me watching it as prior to my trip to Ireland. It sounded dry and boring as fuck but it actually was a pretty good flick. Anyone into history and Ireland shoudl check it out.

Frogacuda

I was talking to snarf about this yesterday, and I explained that Kill Bill doesn't have a strong central plot, and isn't supposed to. It's more a collection of vignettes, all of which have their own characters, conflicts, and plots that are introduced and resolved. If you want it to be a really coherent whole, you'll be disappointed, but there are a lot of scenes in Kill Bill that are classic.

Kill Bill Volume 1 was great. I saw it drunk and thought it was amazing but then I watched it again to make sure it wasn't just cause I was obliterated. I was happy to find that it was still great.

Kill Bill Volume 2 was ok just because I was curious to see how it turned out. Other than resolution, it was pretty bland, comparatively speaking.

Reservoir Dogs kicked some ass. That damn old lady gets me every time. I always hope it turns out different, haha.

It was in theaters, not DVD, but I'm going to use this thread anyway.

I saw Eastern Promises today. David Cronenberg's latest flick about the Russian mob. It's pretty interesting to see Cronenberg using his un-hollywood indie film skills on some more mainstream material. You can tell the movie was penned by the guy that wrote Dirty Pretty Things. Similar tone and story progression.

But God damn was that one scene hard to watch. You'll know the scene when you see it. Yeesh. It's amazing how Cronenberg's depictions of violence in this and History of Violence aren't gory or stylish, they're clumsy and visceral and that somehow makes them so much more brutal.

Crank
The Protector
Fearless
Fantastic 4 Rise of the Silver Surfer

Ong-Bak>>> Tom-Yum-Goong (The Protector) but Tom-Yum is still a decent action flick.
