View Full Version : Monstrous (the movie) thread.

Gah, its killing me. I doubt its a Godzilla flick (despite the reference to Japan). Someone made a speculation that it could be a Cthulhu movie (or possibly involving virtually any of Lovecraft's giant eldritch creatures), which would be the SHIT since Lovecraft's creations are beyond... imagination I guess (haha, he'd probably love it being described as such too).
Anyways, anyone have any idea? Its impressive that they've managed to keep this under wraps for so long.

I mentioned this in the TF thread.
Its Cloverfield.
Heres my entertainment report where I explain it in detail and the info on it thus far. AND the official website.

"Cloverfield" is not the actual name, its the project name for it.
Edit: And apparently you knew this.

:) wanted to make sure you knew and listened to my report.
Ah... Advocate...
Its H.P. Lovecraft. H.R. Lovecraft is probably Howard's lesser known tax-accountant brother. Howard Phillip Lovecraft is a celebrated short story author who wrote science-fiction/horror/fantastical stories for various pulp fiction magazines in the early 1900s (hence making his writings even more amazing given his ideas on chemistry and the like).
Cthulhu only really has one short story to itself ("Call of Cthulhu") though is referenced throughout Lovecraft's works.

Though for the record, I am enjoying your report. Aside from the insanely loud "THEY ARE!", which would probably be fine if I hadn't just woken up to a headache, I'm diggin' it. So good job. :D

Like I told Frog. That was 7th of the 14 takes. I was going to use a different one, but my comp crashed and I hadn't the time to save it.
So this report was actually one I didn't want.

Just out of curiosity, is anyone familiar with Lovecraft's Call of the Ctuhlu story?
I'm not, and I'm debating whether or not I should read it before the movie comes out or save all of the surprise and suspense for the Abrams version.

Call of Cthulhu is online. Its only 12 pages.

I have read every available short story, essay, correspondance, etc. Lovecraft ever wrote. I am an H.P. Lovecraft fanatic.
"Call of Cthulhu" is cool... its just... mmm... the ending of it is a bit anti-climatic and very unlike Lovecraft's typical stuff. I don't really want to give it away, but if we were to go by that story, Cthulhu would not be very threatening in present times. Nowhere near the level of the shoggoth or Yog-Sothoth or Dagon or any of his other "indescribable horrors".
But its a cool story. Not my favorite. My favorite is "Shadow Out of Time". That story will blow your fucking mind. "At the Mountains of Madness" is pretty cool too. "Shadow Over Innsmouth" is a classic!!!! As is "The Dunwich Horror".
But "Call of Cthulhu" is a cool story. And is very intense. Its just at the end you're like, "What!?"

Is there an anthology of his writings that you prefer, if I was going to read his stuff?
The best collection of Lovecraft's works (contained in one volume anyways) is the Library of America's publication titled "H.P. Lovecraft: Tales". This collection contains pretty much all of his most celebrated works including everything I mentioned above as well as "Herbert West - Re-animator" (which is what the cult classic film "Reanimator" is based off of). The only problem is that the collection is a bit pricey ($30). But its hard cover and VERY nice, and really contains pretty much all of Lovecraft's high points.
A good alternative is "The Best of H. P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre" from Del Rey Publishing. This one contains several classics like "Call of Cthulhu", "Rats in the Walls", "Shadow Over Innsmouth", "The Dunwich Horror", "The Colour Out of Space", and Lovecraft's timeless classic "Shadow Out of Time". Regretably, you won't find "He", "Cool Air", "At the Mountains of Madness", "The Horror at Redhook", or "The Shunned House" in this collection (as these are spread out amongst Del Rey's other two publications, "The Road to Madness" and "Dreams of Terror and Death"). Sadly, Del Rey felt the need to edit some of the work though so it isn't EXACTLY what Lovecraft wrote (diction, spelling, etc.).
The absolute best way to read Lovecraft IS through "H.P. Lovecraft: Tales". But if you want a cheaper solution then snagging "The Best of H. P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre" and "Road to Madness" would get you a good basis as well.

So the rumor is that its cthulu and it will be filmed in the first person perspective. Dunno when a REAL trailer is coming though.
You know, this movie has got me thinking about how to do a Lovecraftian movie correctly.
I will type out my thoughts... later. I think J.J. Abram is approaching it somewhat correctly though. So good for him. Most other Lovecraftian movies have been fucking horrible except for "In the Mouth of Madness", which is more of a homage to Lovecraft himself (though Lovecraft NEVER thought what he wrote was real and if you think he did I will so stab you until the squeek box in your throat stops working!!!!!)
Sorry, I hate people who try to make a religion out of Lovecraft's works. Its worse than Scientology because Lovecraft CONSTANTLY said that nothing he wrote about really existed, and he was more of a scientist than a spiritualist (which, if you read his work, thats kinda obvious).

You can check online Darth. they posted them on websites and you can just print them out on your printer. No lie.
Yeah, Lovecraft's works are public domain now, so you can find a lot of it online.

I went on Lovercraft's wiki and at the bottom was a link to Call of Cthulu and it was the entire short story.
You should read it then. Its not Lovecraft's best work, but its good, and probably his most famous work.
