I will never understand the fascination with techno. There's some good stuff here and there, but most of it is just abominable. Formulaic, repetitive, bland, and worthless.

Techno's just one step above house music for me.

There's some half decent stuff out there, and it's had a lot of influence on electronica in general, but fundamentally I find basic techno tedious. It does depend on whether or not you're going to lump stuff like Aphex Twin and LFO in there though - do people still count that as techno?

90% of them the "beat" is "looping kicksample"

I haven't listened to techno in many a moon. But it's enjoyable mindless fun. It's like the 80's action flick of music.

Gabba's like being repeatedly hit with a blunt instrument too, though, and that's really good, if a bit maniacal. Especially seeing as it NEVER STOPS. Most types of music give you time for a breather, but gabba is just on and on and on and on until you fall on the floor, out of breath and almost dead.

6 seconds of music recorded from an obscure Commodore 64 song + looping kicksample= fame and riches across the continent of Europe.

I think Techno is like Hip Hop/R&B in this way:

There are some great tunes, but is loaded with a lot of filler material today. I get in the mood for some good techno beats every so often. :p

And what's up with that video???? Is it real? If so...WOW.

First of All,

Techno sucks, seriously, fuck that shit.

Now, if you want to talk House or Jungle music, I'm your guy, I spun for about 10 years, even playing out in Motor in Detroit and Liquid in Cleveland.

I'm a straight Detroit Booty House type fella anymore, however, I haven't pulled out my tables in 4 years, I retired.

I just feel that everything has it's place;

I've seen and used some techno beats in some action sequences in movies;

(like the beginning of Replacement Killers, or something like that)

Or sometimes a game will pump some techno beat while you traverse through the area blasting away mutant fiends while trying to stay alive. It sort of adds to the intensity.

But I'm sort of the wrong person to talk to about music, because I like most everything lol. Just nothing that sucks... :p

When I draw or try to get in the creative mood, I'll play whatever brings that inspirational touch; classic symphonic orchestral pieces etcetera

Listen to DJ Funk, or Conkrete Jungle, or anything Detroit House style, there is no repeated banging.

I think Techno is like Hip Hop/R&B in this way:

There are some great tunes, but is loaded with a lot of filler material today. I get in the mood for some good techno beats every so often. :p

And what's up with that video???? Is it real? If so...WOW.We need to come up with a new name for R&B of the last 20 years or something. It's totally shit on an otherwise great genre.

And yes, the video is real and the song was a #1 hit in Europe. And yes, it's actually sampled from an obscure Commodore 64 song. They got sued for it.

There is one ... Hip Hop.

Hip Hop that white kids listen too?

Hip Pop.

Serious, Hip Hop is the dancey more bastardized version of R&B. Its just lazy journalists and VEEJAY'S call it R&B and not by the proper name Hip Hop.

If I'm wrong I know Shinji will correct me.

Umm... the radio stations that play it like Hot 97 call it R&B and consider it different from hip hop, so I don't think many would accept that use of the term.

What songs count as good R&B?

I can't think of any newer R&B (as opposed to rhythm & blues, which deserves to be kept separate) that's any good. It's the stuff you get on rubbishy music channels.

Frogacuda

What songs count as good R&B?

Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, etc, etc.

The stuff spawned from Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston and Boyz II Men shouldn't be allowed to share the same genre. Modern R&B is just a vocal showcase with repetitive stock music flourishes and no effort put into the songwriting or melody.

Hunter
07-27-2007, 07:34 PM
Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Temptations. Good stuff.

I don't have the slightest clue as to music classifications. This is how I clasiffy all music.

Soft Rock
Rock
Hard Rock
Heavy Metal
Pop
Electronica
Oldies
Jazz
Country
Classical

What you call R&B I classify as Oldies.

DarthArcturus
07-27-2007, 07:35 PM
thats because like frog said the genre went to shit after a certain point in time so all the great stuff is heard on oldie radio stations.

oh and Stevie Wonder rules

Frogacuda
07-27-2007, 07:37 PM
Lol. Oldies is a time period not a genre.

I actually have to admit Gnarls Barkley's album is actually a modern R&B album I actually really enjoyed and I thought it was creative and original.

Suffice it to say, R&B radio stations largely refused to play it as a result, and yet rock stations played it anyway because it's good.

oh and Stevie Wonder rules

P.S. Which of those categories does Reggae fall under? What about stuff like Randy Newman or Tom Waits? Where does folk fit in?

Reggae is it's own too.
And Rap, forgot about those

I never think about folk. As for Oldies, I classify everything between the 50-70's as oldies.

Seconded. I enjoyed a lot of his pieces.

A very eccentric friend of mine is a DJ in Los Angeles who ordinarily only plays classic, "true" R&B, along with skinhead reggae, Motown, and various other, similar tunes. He always dresses in shiny black loafers, slacks, wool sweaters, and sometimes bowler hats. (Occasionally, he'd put on jeans and a denim jacket slathered in the Jamaican flag's colors.) He doesn't listen to modern music, and is as critical of R&B as anyone can be, but heard Gnarls Barkley and appreciated it.

That's saying something.
