Give it a whirl. The requirements seem to indicate that it is not as likely to blow up your computer as some would have you think. I'm going to fire up vista and see how it fares with everything cranked up to the max, though.

What exactly are the requirements? I'm fairly certain my PC will blow up, but I might give it a whirl if it's reasonable.

Hmm, those minimum or recommended?

Frogacuda

Minimum, but it apparently scales very well. Worth a shot. Recommended is like DX10 and 512 megs of video ram and shit, but it still looks really fucking good in DX9.

Hmmm, thing is, I surpass all the reqs except video, I only have 128. :(

I know High textures work with 256 megs of video ram (only need more for Very High). I'd imagine low or medium would work with 128. One way to find out.

Hunter

If it doesn't work, I will hold you personally responsible. :p

Frogacuda

I'm prepared to accept that responsibility.

Hmmm. Yeah, my 512 megs of ram 1.8 gigahertz Dell piece of shit just isn't gonna cut it. I only have a 5700 128 meg video card, too. Time for a replacement PC

Hmm... So it seems like DirectX10 is fake, heh. Or at least the Crysis support thereof is. It seems like it just disables certain effects if you're running in XP/DX9, but not because those effects don't work.

If you go to the CVarGroups folder and edit the cfg files and replace the "Very High" settings (first paragraph) with the "high" settings (last paragraph) and then set everything in the game to "high", and lo and behold... Perfect "DX10" effects running in XP. Runs faster, than it does in Vista, too.

I tried the beta... half of the world was textured with yellow 'texture loading' banners the entire time. :p I'm pretty sure it was a software issue? I'm running a Q6600, 4GB of memory, and an 8800GTX...

I was pretty psyched for Crysis, but it's not doing much for me at this point. UT3, however, is another story. =)

. . .

Edit: I'm mildly ashamed that my first post here was on the topic of Crysis.

That was an issue with the beta. I had it too for a little while, and it would disappear over the course of the next couple minute. It can be fixed by turning the texture res down.

For some reason after about 2 days it stopped doing it entirely for me though. Dunno why, but I don't care, either.

UT3 will be better for multiplayer than Crysis, but Crysis is going to be a damned fine offline experience.

Also: Welcome to the boards.

Thanks! I've been registered for like six months, I guess it's about time I made a post or two.

I'm just a sucker for UT. I played '99 competitively and I've been itching to get back into it. I'd pick up Crysis too if there weren't so many games coming in such a short period of time. As it is, I've got like two weeks to wrap up Front Mission, Etrian Odyssey, and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn-- not to mention my copy of Border Down should be arriving at just about the same time that UT3 goes on sale.

Border Down is good stuff.

One of the most complex shmups ever made.

I don't know if it's one of the most complex (compared to Radiant it seems simple) but it's certainly deep, and more importantly a LOT of fun.

I'm placing my bets on Crysis being a better SP FPS than anything else but Bioshock. I think UT3 has a good chance at upsetting Halo 3 for deatmatchy multiplayer, and Quake Wars and TF2 have the team-based stuff locked down. Damn it's a good year for the genre.

As someone who has played both extensively for score (and has 1CC'd Radiant Silvergun), I can assure you Border Down is waaaaaaaaaaay more complex than Radiant Silvergun.

There are so many variables in Border Down its insane. You have to know the best way to maximize use of your break laser throughout the levels and same goes for the boss fights. And then you have to consider what the best route to take is. Sure, Red Border is the best for maximum score in level 1, but the Green Border is the best for Level 3. So you HAVE to Border Up AND NOT DIE (thus shooting rank through the roof, oh yes, Border Down has vicious rank, probably second only to Battle Garegga) if you're playing for score.

So basically, you have to know which borders have the maximum opprotunity for score, know where those opprotunities are in each level, and even THEN there's four different possible final levels. There's SOOOO much shit you have to consider its just insane. And if you aren't God's gift to shooters you have to consider the best spots to allow yourself to die so you can cool the rank off a bit.

In Radiant Silvergun you chain stuff and find hidden dogs. Sure, you have to know the levels, but its always going to be the same. The only real change being what weapons you use in some situations and how much scraping you do.

Ah, but I'm way off topic now. So... continue on. :sonic:

Installing now. I know, I'm late. Impressions . . . some day.

So I played it. Graphics are asstastic on my rig, and it runs at like 2 FPS, so I wil pass.

Frogacuda

That sucks. lordsnarf got it running ok on his rig which is modest (particularly the video card).

I liked how you could play through the demo a bunch of different ways, and I hear it just gets way more open than that later on.

So besides the good looks, is there any other reason this isn't just another FPS?

Yeah. It's got a huge, open environment, which gives way to non-linear open-ended gameplay. Your suit has different powers and different modes as well, which can also allow you to approach situations a lot of different ways.

There are a ton of different vehicles littered everywhere, and you can hijack any enemy vehicle and wreak havoc.

It has the most interactive environment I've ever seen. EVERYTHING has physics, and almost everything is destructable. And not in a corny scripted way, but in a way that really reacts to your actions, which lets you use your environment (and your arsenal) in interesting ways.

It's also just very well made as a shooter. The gunplay feels great, the animation and camera work is amazing, and it's exceptionally well executed.

So it's not especially "gimmicky" beyond the suit powers, but it's certainly more than just a pretty face, too.

The level editor in this thing is too damned cool. You can modify the terrain, draw roads, paths, carve caves, and even reprogram the AI, and then switch seamlessly to in-game to test it.
