I just noticed that 1st person shooters are all starting to have the same look and feel and I don't like it. Maybe I'm just cranky because I have a cold.
I just saw this today at 4am when I was having my typical insomnia episode:
What is this screen shot from?
http://msnbcmedia2.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photo_StoryLevel/071029/stg_071029_tech_QuakeWars_3p.hmedium.jpg
I could almost be anything! COD#, MOH#, RTCW, GRAW#, 1942, R6...the list goes on and on.
It's a screen shot from Quake Wars.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21313807/
I'll still buy it anyway, but I feel like wtf happened to the original look and feel to some games and why are they all starting to look the same?
Whatever happened to the old style of FPS that included dark chambers, lakes, abandoned buildings w/ creatures lurking inside, freaky monsters, caves, secret chambers with a monster inside & trap door, lava lake with rocks to jump across, swirling black clouds, creepy church with mystical paintings, jagged hallways with secret passages w/ more freaky and unexpected monsters, etc.
Now....it's a standard look and feel.....camouflage + standard weapons + tank in the distance. :(
Bring back the:

Hmm...looking at my 360 collection, I realized that 6 out of my 7 games are shooters.:(
Gears, CoD2, CoD3, GRAW2, Bioshock, Halo 3...
And Viva Pinata.:p

Holy shit you're right! They do all look the same... I thought that bloody screenshot was freaking GRAW2. Sadly, FPS is never the first place to look for innovation in. This futuristic modern warfare crap has got to stop.
Thank god Unreal Tournament 3 is coming so I can kill outrageous and crazy looking things again.

Yeah, I have a good chunk of FPS' for 360. I'd like some more adventure games.

Good point.
At least Bioshock and Halo 3 are different. Especially Bioshock.

Go play Oblivion or Eternal Sonata!! :p
Yeah, you're right, that pic really shocked me, I was sure it was GRAW also. I think it has something to do with the fact that everyone seems to be using the Unreal engine for their games, and they are not bothering to tweak it much, if at all.

I dunno. First of all, it's an unfortunate choice of screenshot, because Quake Wars does have a lot of monsters and sci fi stuff that you wouldn't mistake for another games.
Second of all, look at Bioshock, Crysis, Condemned, Timeshift, Offset... I mean games that are going for a realistic military theme are going to look like what they are portraying but there's plenty else out there.

Well for a long while it was WWII games and now you are seeing aglut of "modern" combat games. That coupled with a similar engines and you have a recipe for twins!
I thought the shot was GRAW 2 after a quick glance. I would have never guessed Quake. :p

Yeah if it was a more typical screenshot you'd have known right away, though:

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't confuse it for GRAW.

Jericho seems to have the dark, fantasy vibe you're looking for.
I miss the funny Duke Nukem 3D/Shadow Warrior type FPS the most.

Movie quotes and socially unacceptable racial stereotypes?
A little humor and cheese would be nice but I'm not sure the Duke/SW style would really fly any more than Mortal Kombat 2 would work now.

It's acceptable on TV (Family Guy, South Park, etc.).
I don't mean necessarily a direct repeat of those games' styles but just some more games that don't take themselves too seriously or games with a more cartoony look. I wouldn't complain if we got a No One Lives Forever sequel (or a new franchise) but Monolith is busy with other stuff.

Yeah, humor in games in general is at an all-time low, not just the FPS genre.

I remember playing Duke Nukem. I just remember it being sexist, but I was having too much fun playing it to care. :p

The problem with humor in tv vs. that in games is that, on a tv show, you're only going to run across the gag once as you watch the show in a linear fashion. In a game, it's going to be repeated over and over again. The only real exception is in cut-scenes, such as Conker's Great Mighty Poo, but cut-scenes are still one of the stupidest concepts ever inflicted on a medium that's about doing rather than watching stuff.

I would think Serious Sam fills your void quite nicely no?
Jericho looks pretty cool and I love Clive Barker so.......................

I'm playing Jericho now. It's alright. I'm really not blown away by it, but maybe it will pick up.

yeah I'm a bit tired of the military related theme in FPS now. Seems like FPS try to be big time serious movies now instead of cheesy scifi/action movies like in the 90s.

Well games like The Darkness, Jericho and Bioshock have definitely tried to break away from the military theme and offer a fresh coat of paint on the FPS genre.
I thought Bioshock was great personally. Satisfied my FPS itch all while leaving my jaw on the floor.

Gamestop .... jk.
Also, I missed out on the FPS craze ... aka Doom and Quake. So, all I know are the FPS's of today.
I played Quake wars and it was fun. I liked it a lot. Shame that Mantis refuses to play it. Its a ton of fun, especially with the TNL'ers. None of you guys play PC games, except Frog. BUt even he didn't join XFire's TNL group. That was a ton of fun playing alongside all the TNL'ers.

I'll play it dammit. I'll play any FPS! I love them all. I just wish they all had a more distinct look and feel.

I agree with that aspect.
I also wish more people, in general, would play as a team rather than loose cannons.

FPS'es have gotten a bit in a rut artisitically (Bioshock is the only one that has caught my interest), that is true. I do think I see some sort of weird demon-esque spawn laying on the ground in Mantis's shot, but otherwise...yeah, is that a Clancy game? :bucky: Maybe that's why I haven't been into a FPS in some time...
