I noticed an interesting Gamespot article today. The headline reads "PS3 Gains on Wii in Japan," and you can read it here:
http://www.gamespot.com/news/index.html?action=convert&om_clk=latestnews&tag=latestnews;more
Here are the weekly numbers they reference:
Wii last week: 24,932
Wii this week: 27,502
Net gain: 2570
PS3 last week: 17,130
PS3 this week: 18,785
Net gain: 1655
Somebody please explain this to me, because my public school-educated mind seems to be missing something...

Maybe they meant that it's falling behind at a slightly slower rate?

Could be the case... either way, it's a horrible headline.
Besides, I thought the real story there was the PSP. Granted, it's still being outsold by the DS, but it's numbers are nonetheless solid. Crisis Core has been out over there for a while now, and the handheld is still selling decently (unlike the post-Halo 3 deflation over there).
I guess "PSP Selling Much Better Than Before" doesn't get quite as many clicks...

No, the PS3 has become a bit of a whipping boy as of late...so any sort of success warrants a story. I can see it now..."PS3 gains on Lucky Charms cereal in Rhode Island."

The PS3 sold 68.7% of Wii's total last week. It sold 68.3% this week. That's a drop no matter how you look at it. Really, the headline should read "Wii Widens Sales Gap Vs. PS3 WTFLOL!"
Also, this could have been a really fun front-page blog/article. I'm one small prod away from writing it up myself. :)

I don't know if I'd read any headline with "wtflol" in the title. lol

I thought about that myself. If you really want it, I won't cry foul or anything. Just give me a heads up so I don't do it myself, see that you already did it, find out that my time was wasted and hit the bottle... :)
Good idea for a headline, BTW.
Question: The PS3 does what?

:goodpost:
I would consider buying a PS3 if it weren't for three important factors:
1) They took away backwards compatibility.
2) Where are the games?
3) Their insistence that I conform to the Blu-ray standard.
To be honest, the way the 360 upscales DVDs on my HDTV makes me wonder what the big deal is. While I know it's not true hi-def, it still looks pretty damn nice.

More people need to realize this. The HD format war is obnoxious and the old standard has plenty of life still.

Agreed.

Even though I own the HD-DVD add-on for the 360, DVD's still look really good on my Oppo player.
There are a good selection of HD-DVD's that look amazing though. I have compared a few (I do have a few movies on both formats) and the pictures are much clearer. That is not true of all HD-DVD's unfortunately.
Too bad the 40GB PS3 is gimped. It would be somewhat more useful if it had all the features of the 80GB minus the extra HDD space.

Hot Fuzz is jaw dropping in HD (with a decent tv). It's a double side so I could compare the regular DVD right away, and it's just a blurry mess in comparison. For most movies though it'll hardly matter. I also have the original Willy Wonka in HD, and can barely notice the difference.

Starting it up right now. For what it's worth, the headline I mentioned is what Gamespot should have run. Mine is going to be "Gamespot fails 8th grade math"

I've made that blunder more than once... one of them needs to change their names already.

You know, I could have sworn I double-checked that.
