View Full Version : Did anyone else like the early Xbox games?
Nightcaster, Azurik, Blood Wake, Kung Fu Chaos, and even Blinx I guess.
For some reason, I really liked the Xbox early on. It was weird. It was obvious that they had no fucking clue what they were doing and were scrambling to make a successful IP, but for some reason that struck me as endearing at the time.
And for the time period, those games were neat. Azurik had crazy draw distances (I think?) and was really only held back by some questionable combat and no leveling up (which I hated). It was MASSIVE though, and I had a blast just exploring the world for hours. These days its nothing impressive, but at the time it was really cool.
Then there's Blood Wake. A lot of people hate the game. I loved it. It was fucking hard, but it was fun as hell. The water effects were just amazing, and the multiplayer was a blast. I imagine if a sequel were ever made (which will never happen) and was on Live I imagine it would see some decent success.
In so far as Nightcaster, I thought it was really neat too. It just had an old school feel about it, and the final battle was just fun.
And then Blinx, Microsoft's stab at making a Sonic. Wasn't a bad game, and it had a really neat idea (that kinda got popularized in the newest Prince of Persia installments). Its just Blinx moves so damn slow...

You were not alone. I loved that game.....just wish I knew where it went. I really liked the Oddworld series, in general. Still haven't played Stranger, god damn EA
There were some good early Xbox games, but I think the launch was pretty lacking. I kinda wish I gave Blood Wake more of a shot, but I only played a demo and wasn't impressed past the cool water. Never tried Azurik and I didn't particularly like Blinx only because I had much higher expectations of it. I should have gone into that one expecting a disaster and I would have been more pleased.

You know I have seen Oddworld Strangers Wrath at BB here in MN new for only 9.99.
Shall I send you a copy Bru? In exchange for payment of course! ;)
I did enjoy the early stuff as well and I have all the games you listed except Bloodwake which I did play extensively.
To be honest I thoroughly enjoyed Blinx especially considering it was soemthing that had not been tried yet. It was a sad day when the sequel came out and they butchered the game by splitting it into two and making you play those retarded pig pirate things. Great as enemies but honestly I just like to kill them... not play as them.

How about the early days of Live? Those Ghost Recon marathons were something else!
I never got to play a lot of the early Xbox games, but from an outsider's perspective, Panzer Dragoon Orta is one of the few games that really, really appealed to me. I had a blast during what short time I got to spend with it, it really felt like something special.
The PDO commercials are still burned into my memory... that song 'Violet' by Bones Domingo is amazing and really made it.

Stranger is fan-fucking-tastic. I bought that for my little brother for Christmas some years back and it's still the game he plays more than any other.

The early Xbox games? No, not particularly.
It's been a while, but I don't remember seeing anything in the first year that grabbed my attention and really made me want an Xbox. For me, that happened in the second half of the console's short life.

Well, it is a HUGE step down in quality from the first Oddworld game (I never played Exxodus, or however they spelled it), in two major ways: originality and control.
I know this will NEVER happen, but I would love to see an Azurik 2 or Blood Wake 2.
And I think Microsoft was rather stupid to drop Abe/Oddworld as one of their mascots. But then again, this is the company that dropped Psychonauts as well.

Blood Wake did get painfully hard later on. And unlocking all the ships in the game was insanely difficult.

I got the Xbox around a year after it came out. Halo aside, I thought its first year was pretty weak. Morrowind and Max Payne were awesome but I got them for PC.

Yeah, kind of like almost every 3D sequel to a 2D game ever. Never held Mario 64 back.

I had the Xbox on day one and besides the greatness that was Halo:D I enjoyed a few of the early games.
I had PGR and liked it a lot.
I had Blood Wake and I enjoyed it. It did get way too tough at the end so I went the loser route and found some cheat codes for invincibility. Still it was a lot of fun to play.
I have Munch and although I never finished it, I did enjoy the parts I played through. I also have played a good chunk of Stranger's and it is a lot of fun. The ammo is great in itself.
Honestly though I played so much Halo back in the early days of Xbox. Co-op and single player mostly, but still I played the living crap out of the campaign in that game. I am getting to that point with Halo 3's campaign and that is a good thing.
I also have amazing memories of the early days of Live. MechAssault and Ghost Recon for hours on end. I would still play those games online now. Between those two games and GR Island Thunder Live was well worth the price of admission to me.
