November 30, 2007 - The PlayStation 3 may have lost the "Black Friday" second-place sales race to the Xbox 360, but not by as much as Microsoft claims, according to Sony.
Speaking to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/341718_xbox30.html) newspaper, a Sony rep said that, in a statement sent to media this week, Microsoft overstated the amount by which the 360 outsold the PS3 over Thanksgiving week, which includes the Black Friday mega-shopping day.
Without reporting actual sales figures, Sony reported this week (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/837/837917p1.html) that sales of the PS3 in North America during Thanksgiving week rose 245 percent over the same period last year. On Thursday, Microsoft said it sold 310,000 Xbox 360s during Thanksgiving week and claimed that's twice the number of consoles Sony moved.
"I can assure you that Microsoft's estimates of our PS3 unit sales numbers are way off and they did not outsell PS3 2:1 during Black Friday week," said Sony Computer Entertainment America spokeswoman Kimberly Otzman.
If Sony didn't sell a mere 155,000 PS3s during Thanksgiving week as Microsoft claims, how many units did they sell? They're not saying and probably won't. The real victory probably belongs to Nintendo anyway - the company reportedly sold 350,000 Wiis that week, along with 653,000 Nintendo DS handhelds.
