View Full Version : GOTY?
Well, all the cards are on the table (unless we're going to count in the new NiGHTS, which I say we don't bother). I think all the GOTY candidates for '07 are out and we can make a fairly educated guess on what the GOTY will be (or just say what your personal one is, BLUE DRAGON! Erm... I kid... I think).
Anywho, vote, and discuss.

Naturally, my vote went to Galaxy. It should be noted that I haven't played enough of Bioshock yet to absolutely state this as my final answer; that's the only other game on the list that I would seriously consider for such an honor.
Personally, I'm having a hard time voting.
I've played through Mass Effect, Halo 3, halfway through Bioshock, and I think I'm currently halfway through Call of Duty 4.
And I honestly don't know what to vote for. My honest to God favorite game this year is probably a toss up between Blue Dragon and Mass Effect, but the best MADE game? 'Tis hard. Halo 3's single player got rid of all the lame filler from the first two, and while this made it shorter, this also made it only have ONE section that was lame, as opposed to hallways and hallways of bleh. And multiplayer was a BLAST when I had Xbox Live Gold. And co-op? Maaaan, it don't get no better!!
Bioshock is also awesome, but in a completely different way. Its very well written and absolutely gorgeous, but as I understand it once you beat it you're pretty much done.
Mass Effect was also completely awesome. But there was a lot of, "This could really use a lot of work," moments and the whole, "Only one planet per solar system can be visited thing!" was a real downer for me. Regardless though, it was fucking awesome.
From what I've played of CoD4 thus far, I don't see it making my list. Its cool, but really not my thing.
So... I can't vote yet. :p Though I'm leaning towards Halo 3, just because it was the complete package.

When you are used to playing Call of Duty 2 or 4, and then you go back to
Halo, you feel like you're playing some game for little retard kids. No
disrespect to anyone here. I voted for CoD4 of course, BioShock with
a close 2nd.
I am honestly yet to play a CoD game online. I just play through the single player.
Might snag gold again and give CoD4 a shot since the leveling up system is enticing.

I don't see a problem with a "once you beat it, it's over" sort of game, like Bioshock. There's a place for games with no replay value. If it tells a captivating story, and the gameplay keeps you hooked along the way, I don't see that as an impediment to receiving the highest of honors. Not every game needs 50 trillion hours of online options.
I agree with your stance on Call of Duty 4. I've only had a few minutes of hands-on time with it at a friend's house. Those few minutes were fun, but hardly life-changing.
Mass Effect looks promising, but I probably won't get to it for quite some time. As for Crysis, it's not even on my radar. I'm getting near the end of Blue Dragon, and my journey didn't give me the warm fuzzies that you experienced. The first disc was about as fun as watching that Bloomberg channel, and the fun times on the other two discs were ruined by a poorly-written script and generic plot. Nene is a bland, cookie-cutter villain, and Maru might just be the most annoying supporting character this side of Jar-Jar Binks. Every time he spoke, I prayed that Sephiroth would descend from the heavens and do what he does best.

I haven't played Mass Effect and only a bit of Bioshock, so take that for what it's worth.
I voted Crysis. I suspect if I played more Bioshock I'd like that more, but even then, Crysis is clearly the better shooter as a shooter. It's got the best action the genre's ever seen. It's like playing an awesome Hollywood Blockbuster. In many ways it out-Halos Halo, as well.
I do think very highly of Galaxy and CoD4.

Furthermore, where are the DS games? That quirky little handheld easily ate up the majority of my gaming hours in 2007. The fact that Hotel Dusk is nowhere to be found causes me to weep a little inside.

It was a weak year overall for DS games, but there are a few contenders.
I made an Other option.
I just listed the things that would more than likely win the title on various sites and all that. I understand other great games came out earlier, but... I can't really remember what they were... except for Blue Dragon. :nosay:

It was a weak year overall for DS games, but there are a few contenders.
OBJECTION!
I felt that it was a pretty strong year for the DS.
Hotel Dusk
Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Picross DS
Planet Puzzle League
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Dementium: The Ward
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
Contra 4
Sonic Rush Adventure
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Brain Age 2
Heroes of Mana
...just to name a few.
Of course, these topics are always a matter of personal preference. If the above games don't appeal to a particular gamer, their interpretation of the year for the DS would be far less cheery.
I think the PS3 had a horrible year, while others might say it was absolutely fucking spectacular.
For these reasons, I really don't like the idea of a single definitive "Game of the Year."
Well... I mean... we're mostly discussing people's personal GOTY's here with a poll for fun... nothing in concrete or anything.
And for the record, no one but a complete Sony fanboy could possibly argue that the PS3 had a spectacular year. ;)

well out of those I've played Mass Effect, Halo 3, and CoD 4. I probably should play bioshock before I vote but I won't be playing that till winter break.
CoD4 is an excellent game both offline and on. The single player is very short though not really a problem because action is nearly constant (kinda like a shmup) Big points taken off for no coop offline or online, and also not being able to have two or more players on the same 360 online. Everything else in the game is about perfect in my book. But the 10/10 and upper 9s by reviewers are too high. I'd give it a 9.0
Mass Effect has some issues with gameplay, menu system, and AI. But more than makes up for it in story, presentation, and characters. Which is probably more important for a RPG anyways. The gameplay gets better later in the game as well. So yeah I'd give it oh 9.5/10?
Halo 3 has a great single player. Really awesome stuff and has the total package as far as options offline and online. Main problem for me is the lack of being able to experience custom or forge modes by random searches through live. Also the multiplayer pretty much feels the same as halo 2. I got pretty tired of it fast. 9.3/10
so yeah I guess my vote goes to Mass Effect :D Though could change..
shit I think I accidentally voted Cod 4

You know, for the longest time the Cube was my main system, too. It wasn't a corporate loyalty thing; rather, I really liked the controller layout compared to the PS2 and Xbox. That's why most of the multiplatform games I own from the last gen are the Cube versions.

I personally hated the GC controller, but I didn't give it a good enough shot to be fair. My cousin claims it's easy to use due to the shape of the buttons.
Anyway, Bioshock is my pick. Haven't played Mass Effect and I don't think I will. I'm sure CoD4 is good times, but I'm not a MP fan. SIngle player is likely fun, but I'm betting I will like Bioshock more. Halo 3 was a surprise since I expected nothing from it, but still doesn't hold a candle to Bioshock, in my opinion. I'll play Mario Galaxy sometime after Christmas. I can't see it being my GotY, but I guess I'll find out when I pop it in. Maybe it'll blow me away and I'll change my mind.

I have yet to play Mass Effect, it's sitting on my game shelf. I have played COD4, Halo 3 and some of Bioshock.
I like COD4 a lot, but I prefer Halo 3's multiplayer and single player. I have yet to finish Bioshock, but I really enjoyed what I played.
Yes I am voting for Halo 3 (yes I know shocker), but I have already played through the single player 4 times (scoring runs, getting skulls, it is just a lot of fun). Not to mention the multiplayer, which is getting three new maps on Dec. 11th.
COD4 had a great campaign, but way too short. I will probably play through it again just to get some achievements. As for multiplayer, I like the leveling system, but it puts you on an uneven playing field right from the start. It does not take too long to level up, but at first you have limited weapons to work with. It does give you a reason to play a lot though.
Since I play a lot online, that is where Bioshock will lose some points, with no multiplayer I will probably not play through it more than once or twice at the most.

yeah it (GC) was a good controller. I think I like the xbox controller a bit more now but for certain games cube's controller worked better
No... no no no no! The GC controller continued the retardedness began by the 64 one. IMO Nintendo has rarely done a decent controller. I'd say SNES and Wii as their top contenders. The GC controller was great if you were 12 or at least had hands the size of a 12 year old. Don't even get me started on that pathetic fucking yellow knob they called a second analog stick. Now the wavebird for its excellent wireless tech was awesome but again the pads size, its button layout and that weak ass stick made playing many games for me a complete chore.
Its partially why I hate Sony. That sad excuse for a d-pad has always made me roll my eyes. Their lack of "triggers" also keeps them completely away from having a truly full functional controller for many game types. Be it driving games or shooters nothing replaces a good trigger.
Some of my favs would be the standard saturn controller, the dreamcast, controller s then the pinnacle the wirless 360 controller.
------------------------------
Oh and for game of the year I'll choose Halo 3. Big surprise right? Well despite my fan status making anything I say irrelevant that game has the COMPLETE package. Online, offline, gameplay, gameflow, story, multiplayer versus, co-op, insane musical score, beautiful graphics and continued support after release the likes of which almost no other game gets on a console, bungie.net and all of their tracking and statistics. IMO their is no other sane choice. You didn't have to like it, but you simply can't ignore it. The whole fact that Frog uses "out-halo" to even start to describe Crysis along with the long worn phrase "Halo-killer" in reference to other wanna-be FPS titles like Haze etc drives the point home. Halo and Bungie ARE the fucking bar by which almost every other FPS is judged especially when it comes to consoles.
But I'm just a Bungie Boy so what do I know? :chief:

Great points on the GC controller. It was fairly comfortable but the second analog stick might as well have not been there at all. Plus I wasn't a huge fan of the button setup. The Z button was useless , IMO.
The dual shock (1,2 or 3) has terrible analog stick placement and no triggers.

I'm not voting until I have played more games. I haven't played Crysis, Mass Effect, Orange Box, UT3, and others yet. I have played Call of Duty 4 but not quite enough to rate it.
So, not including those, I'm thinking my top ones are:
1. Super Mario Galaxy

3. Zack & Wiki
4. Halo 3

I put my vote in for BioShock. I was just a plain great game. I loved the atmosphere, the story and themes, the action was great (though I agree with Frog that the action in Crysis is top of the genre good). It just did everything right. Crysis would have to be a damn close second for me.
I fell in love with the Gamecube's controller the minute I put it in my hands. I will admit it's not as good as the XBOX/360 controller or as versatile as a PS2 controller, but it is damn fine. And as far as the thing being too small, just imagine how adults felt when they tried to use an NES controller when we were all gaming it up.

Okay, here's the thread -
http://www.the-nextlevel.com/board/showthread.php?t=49148
The recap post of mine:
- The criteria for inclusion being a mix of quality and influence kills the focus of such a list and is a recipe for cop-outs.
- No pre-NES console games (outside of listing ports for stuff like Ms. Pac-Man). That's right, even though the list very much factors in historical context, it's okay to ignore even the most mainstream early consoles like the 2600, ColecoVision, and Intellivision. The early arcade game supply is lower than ever, too. At least the previous IGN list had Discs of TRON.
- No post-NES underdog console games with the exception of a couple Saturn games since they're new enough for IGN staff to have played them. No Duo, no SMS, no Neo Geo, no imports.
- I really like that they made the list a mixture of console and computer gaming but there's virtually no computer gaming that wasn't on DOS/Windows PC here. The reason Archon probably made the list is that it had a NES version. Related to the extreme PC-centricism of the computer picks, the list has an abnormally small number of games developed in Europe.
- Sega got sodomized. Based on a quick count, 24 Nintendo published games and 5 Sega published games. Nintendo dominates the top ten but the highest ranking Sega game is at number 44. Sonic is below all four Mario games on the list. There are five Zelda games and two Metroid games but no Monster World or Shinobi games. Apparently fucking Pokemon Blue is more important than Sega's entire history.
- The factual errors on the RPG stuff mentioned earlier are ridiculous, and the inconsistency when listing all of a game's formats is sloppy.
- Most of the games are high quality when taken individually. It's when you look at the list as a whole that the biases stick out like a sore thumb to anyone with a decent level of gaming knowledge. I don't care if a list doesn't include every excellent game as I know it's not possible but they should at least attempt to do justice to the vast sea of amazing games.
Yes, I wrote too much but that's because I care about gaming history. IGN does not.

Nice post Neo. I had only gotten through from 100 to about 35 when I had to walk away from the list partially out of distaste but mostly out of need to go and be soemwhere at a particular point in time, ie I was already late. But in that short time I did notice a lot of what you say above. It probably would have hit me harder had I finished the 35 to 1 spots.
Its almost poetic justice what the duke xbox controller did in that it reversed the hand size discrimination relationship(favors bigger hands). I didn't mind size though I can see how some would not like, but it was the oval shaped jewel like convex buttons that were the worst part of that controller IMO.

I choose Portal. It's short, but I've never played anything like it before. It was the most refreshing game I've played all year. And not just gameplay-wise, but also with the way the limited plot develops through the ramblings of GLaDOS and discovery of hidden rooms in the test chambers. I mean, I'm rarely as compelled to finish final stages as I was Portal's. I love the deadpan humor, especially in the final room. Very good stuff I say.
Half-Life 2 Episode 2 gets a close runners up.

The Controller S was a welcome change. While I appreciated Microsoft's attempt to cater to my big American man-hands, I could never get used to those buttons. That alone was my big reason for not picking up an Xbox for its first couple of years.
Thankfully, they seem to have nailed it with the 360 controller. :) Those black and white buttons were annoying and should have been shitcanned when the S was released.

There's no question that the list was biased and the Sega representation was laughable. However, I think any objective, reasonable person would have to concede that Nintendo's catalog of "top shelf" titles easily eclipses Sega's several times over.
That being said, the good folks at IGN could have toned it down a bit and still made the point. It was about as obnoxious as the Pats running up the score on a game they already have in the bag.

First of all, there is no objectivity on this issue. Thinking you can objectively penetrate a game's quality is just called "being an ass."
Second of all, Sega has made 10 times as many games as Nintendo ever has, and that might be underestimating. From that catalog of thousands, are you telling me you couldn't "reasonably" find 25 just as worthy as the 25 on the IGN list? Bullshit.
Here's the Nintendo stuff from the list:
Pilotwings (SNES)
Advance Wars (GBA)
Perfect Dark (N64)
The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening (GB, GBC)
Star Fox (SNES)
GoldenEye 007 (N64)
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (NES)
Super Smash Bros. (N64)
The Legend Of Zelda (NES)
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (GBA, SNES)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Pokemon Blue Version (GB)
The Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
Metroid Prime (GCN)
Super Mario Kart (SNES)
Super Mario World (GBA, SNES)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (GBA, SNES)
Super Metroid (SNES)
Super Mario 64 (N64)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
Super Mario Bros. (NES)
Now, I could easily name a dozen Sega games that are better arcade racing games than Super Mario Kart. I don't think you'll argue with me there. And probably two dozen that are better shooters than Star Fox. Let's float this out there:
Sonic 1, 2, 3
Space Harrier
Out Run
Fantasy Zone
Thunderblade
Wonderboy III
Monster World IV
Kenseiden
Crazy Taxi
Jet Set Radio
Rez
Shenmue II
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Phantasy Star
Daytona USA
Super GT
Virtua Fighter 4
Shinobi
Shinobi III
Dragon Force
Zaxxon
Toejam and Earl 2
Alien Soldier
Gunstar Heroes
Guardian Heroes
Those are just the first games that popped into my mind, but they're all solid Top 100 contenders.

Are you serious? Only a Nintendo fanboy or someone with little experience with Sega would come to that conclusion.
I'm huge fan of both Nintendo and Sega, and I would say the best of both are totally comparable. Sega's got a more varied history, though, as they branch out into newer franchises more often and make way more games.
- Genesis Sonic games aren't up there with the 2d marios? Jet Grind Radio isn't one of the best 3d platform-ish games?
- The best Monster World games don't hold up against the best Zelda and Metroid games?
- Shinobi III isn't one of the best action-platformers ever? Nintendo doesn't have an equivalent.
-The Shining Force series doesn't compare to Nintendo's SRPGs?
- Sega's arcade racers aren't among the best ever made?
- Panzer Dragoon Saga and the best Phantasy Star games aren't better than anything Nintendo has done in the RPG genre?
- The Virtua Fighter series aren't among the best 3d fighters?
- Sega doesn't have an impressive gun game history from the SMS to modern arcades?
- Space Harrier, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Galaxy Force II, etc. aren't among the best rail shooters ever?

Ten times the games, but how many turds?
And while you could certainly find 25 excellent Sega games (shit, I can do that off the top of my head), how well do those same 25 Sega games hold up compared to the top 25 Nintendo games? Which had better sales? Which had better reviews? Which is more talked about by the average mainstream gamer to this day?
Walk into your local Gamestop and ask the average Joe about his favorite Sega games. More likely than not, you'll be met with "Sonic!" followed by a deer-in-headlights stare. Then ask about his favorite Nintendo games. There ya go.
I know that many people here have a great deal of nostalgic feeling, for all things Sega. I understand and respect that very much. However, when it comes to the test of time, you would have to be a monumental idiot to say that Nintendo hasn't done a much better job of creating a legacy for itself.
And that is why you will always see lists like this.

Aw, fuck. Here we go.
1. I never owned a Saturn. It was a big fucking waste of money and a piece of shit. There. I said it.
2. Go back and read my last post. Then go back and read the source article. The list wasn't based solely on the quality of the games, but the impact they had on the industry at the time and the legacy they maintain so many years later.
I'm not going to argue Sega quality vs. Nintendo quality, because we will be here all day and I guarantee that hearts and minds will not change. But when it comes to the factors mentioned in my second point, Nintendo has always done a better job in those realms. End of story.
First of all, there is no objectivity on this issue. Thinking you can objectively penetrate a game's quality is just called "being an ass."

In all seriousness, what Sega racing game would you place above Mario Kart, and by what measure are you calling it "better?" Your answer might be better from a technical standpoint, and I would be willing to concede that. However, when it comes to balls-out fun, nothing Sega created is tearing me away from shooting shells on karts.

Fine, it's 90% turds. I don't feel like getting into something this big when the Seahawks are on, if you can't tell.

Good point. I was never a big arcade gamer. I never saw the point in pumping quarters into a machine when I could buy a game and keep it forever. (My mind has always been funny like that. It's one of my dozens of gaming quirks.) It's not so much a bias as the fact that it simply never was my thing.
Notice, though, that IGN didn't exactly embrace arcade games in their list, either. And it's not just them; you don't hear about it much in mainstream game publications at all. Of course, this could have to do with the fact that arcades are a dying/dead breed. Although I was never into them, I do lament this.

I would have responded sooner, but my shift ended and I needed to wash off the filth of work.
Anyway, hell yes to what Frog and Neo just said. There are easily as many quality Sega games as Nintendo.
You mean to tell me the quality of a game is based on the fool sheep who blindly followed it? Sega's failure to be successful was never because of the quality of their games. Forget IGN's criteria of legacy. Legacy is shit when you're talking about what makes a game great (fun. not legacy). You would pass up a lot of good gaming times because the masses didn't remember it or hail it as an all-time best? Just because it never achieved popularity?

That's is a bias.
Anyway, Sega was born in the arcades, they were the biggest arcade developer of all time, and they still are. And arcades remained a huge part of what drove console gaming ahead for many years, as well. Sega was always two steps ahead of the competition in the arcades and this was a driving force behind the company through the Dreamcast era.
If we can't fairly discuss arcade and arcade-style gaming, then there's no point in even having a discussion about Sega.
And believe what NeoZeedeater says. He's the closest thing to an objective gamer I know. Not because he doesn't have his biases and preferences, but because he plays everything with an open mind.

Your points are valid. However, the list is more or less a tribute to what mainstream gamers will remember as great. It's hard to conduct a mass nostalgia session if you populate the list with obscure Sega titles that most gamers in 2007 probably haven't played.
Frankly, I don't know why they do these lists anyways. They didn't include Earthbound, so it's already invalid in my opinion.

So you think IGN largely ignored arcade games because they knew that I, personally, wouldn't relate?
Perhaps they thought that most modern readers in 2007 wouldn't relate. If Sega was born (and biggest) in the arcades, and the arcades have gone the way of the dodo, and not many modern gamers relate to the arcade scene in the 1980s anymore, well... there's your answer. Sega as a company is a dying institution. Why the hell does that impact how people see their legacy. I know that it DOES, I can see it, but it's irrational.

Well you keep insisting that the list is a bunch of educated people trying to predict what ignorant people believe, so I don't know that that assessment flatters whatever ways it might coincide with your own views.
I think it would be far more interesting if a bunch of people that know their gaming history inside and out made a list that transcended continents, platforms, and genres.

Single Player FPS of the Year: Bioshock
Online FPS of the Year: Halo 3 then CoD4
Sports GotY: Kinda hard actually.... not many sports games caught my eye
Driving GotY: Forza 2
RPGotY: Mass Effect
Platform GotY: Mario Galaxy
Adventure GotY: Legend of Zelda TTP
Music GotY: Rock Band
Best Buy otY: Orange Box
Best Hand Held GotY: Elite Beat Agents
Best Puzzle GotY: Puzzle Quest
Most Innovative: Portal

Why? This is not a poll on IGN, Gamespot or somewhere that is overpopulated by the mainstream.
I consider us pretty well educated when it comes to gaming so any polls should be fairly unbiased. Heck I admit to being a huge Halo fan, but it doesn't prevent me from enjoying other games.
To ignore arcade gaming (I don't care who does it - IGN, here, etc.) is ignorant at best when talking about gaming. Especially when making a list of top 100 games of ALL TIME. I am still debating a list for our top 10 thread we have here and one that is definitely making it for me is Afterburner in that huge moving cockpit cabinet. Plus most likely I will include the original Gauntlet as well.

Lol, you gotta drop a lot of balls to go through 4 teams and take 11 years to make a game. 3D Realms is good at that.
1. I never owned a Saturn. It was a big fucking waste of money and a piece of shit. There. I said it.
...
...
...
OK, what the fuck? Have you ever even PLAYED a Saturn? Ever even SEEN the games on the Sega Saturn? They have no comparison. Does Nintendo have anything on any of their consoles that can compare to Guardian Heroes? No. Does Nintendo have anything on any of their consoles that can compare to Panzer Dragoon Saga? No. Not Mother, not Super Mario RPG, NOTHING! Has Nintendo has Smash Bros. and Sega has Fighter's Megamix... which is infinitely better.
Sega Saturn was a piece of shit? This coming from someone who supported the fucking Gamecube? Are you fucking kidding me? The Sega Saturn is home of the best 2D shooter in existence (Radiant Silvergun). There is no equivalent on a Nintendo console. There's of new IPs and new types of gameplay on the Saturn. Whereas the N64 had what? Mario now in 3D and more boring than any 2D iteration and nowhere as fun to play as NiGHTS. I MIGHT give you Sin & Punishment, but it didn't even COMPARE to Panzer Dragoon in terms of music, art style, plot, etc. It had cooler gameplay though, but its Treasure, so of course.
But no, outside of the NES and the SNES, all Nintendo consoles have been good for have been the same old Nintendo song sung with prettier notes. Well, now we have them with motion controls, and thus making things more annoying than they have to be.
But the Saturn is a piece of shit?
Do you not play arcade games? 'Cause on the Capcom front, the Saturn has all you need. On the obscure and quirky front, the Saturn has all you need. Shmups? Saturn destroys any Nintendo console in existence. Same goes for 2D fighters. RPGs? Saturn destroys any Nintendo console after the fucking SNES.
What did the N64 have? What? 2 games? Gamecube? Just about every great game on that system was later on another system or came from a previous system. Searching for triforce pieces on Wind Waker was fucking stupid, and made it a bad game. Mario Sunshine was the dumbest idea ever. And Animal Crossing is basically "The Sims: Kidz Edition".
People may not generally know much about the Sega Saturn, but I would at least hope any gamer with general knowledge about all the consoles would know enough to know that it's SURE AS FUCK a better system than the N64 or Gamecube. It may not be on the SNES level for many (though for fighters and shooters it obliterates the ole' SNES), but its sure as fuck not a piece of shit. Sega made shit during that time period that Miyamoto couldn't make if Yukio Futatsugi was standing over his shoulder telling HIM to find the fucking fun. No sir. No. I'll let the kiddies throw the Playstation out there for whatever reason, but the N64? There was less 3rd party support for that than there was for the Saturn in the US. It was like, "Sega Saturn '97 The Extended Version", only without much of anything worth playing.
Yeah, Sega Saturn controller is STILL hailed by anyone who knows their shit as the greatest gaming controller ever. N64 is still pretty much a joke. It and its "Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Wasted Time".
My summary of Nintendo since the Virtual Boy (since I actually liked the Virtual Boy) is as follows: Boring.
Sega Saturn a piece of shit... yeah, thats why the 3D controller has an expansion bay in it where Sega planned to put in MOTION CONTROLS for the sequel to NiGHTS.
Oooooohhh... I'm just going to stop now. Because I could go on all night.
...
...
And for the record, Fire Emblem is pure fucking DRIVEL when compared to Shining Force. The worst Shining Force entry is better than the best Fire Emblem by far.

I will say that my comments are a bit exaggerated, because I felt what I did was more comical and made a more enjoyable read.
My actual real life reaction was:
"Oh, someone else that doesn't know jack shit about the Sega Saturn, maybe one day he'll be enlightened."
Though for the record, the N64 and Gamecube both have shitty libraries and I do not consider them good systems. And I only liked Mario and Zelda when they were in 2D, because in 3D I find them painfully boring.

Who didn't see this coming? The only reason I let that comment slide was because I knew jp would be able to handle this one without any help.

Anyway, I kind of agree, although I did like the GameCube, it was mostly for third party stuff, a lot of which was multiplatform.
Nintendo still gets love from me for their handheld output though. Despite the weak quality to shit ratio, GBA still had a hell of a library of A-list titles. DS should get there eventually, too.

Haha... guilty as charged.
Best Wario ever was on the Virtual Boy.

And I'm glad I served my purpose squall. I figured you were just kidding (somewhat), but I figured if someone wanted to throw out the bait and get me to do the whole Saturn thing, I might as well bite.

It should also be noted (particularly by overzealous Sega fanboys, if one hypothetically happened to be among us) that I bought an Xbox solely to play Shenmue II. I wasn't interested in Halo, and I could have given two shits less about Fable.
Nope, I shelled out $250 just to play a Sega game. Of course, I picked up other games later; but for the longest time, my Xbox library consisted of nothing but Shenmue II and OutRun 2. True story.

It's cool. I enjoy the rants. And no, I don't truly think the Saturn was a piece of shit. I do, however, think it gets a lot of undue praise for nostalgic reasons. Then again, I'm guilty of the same thing when it comes to several games, so who am I to talk?

Nah, Wario Land 3 is the best one. 2 and 4 are also fantastic. The VB one is better than the first though. And frankly, they're all great.
Then again, I'm a total whore for Puzzle Platformers, which the VB one and original GB one weren't so they slide on the list.

Agreed. Waluigi just exudes... well, I don't know what he exudes. I'm pretty sure there aren't any adjectives in our language that describe how much I hate Waluigi. I don't remember where he came from in the Nintendo universe, and I don't care.

I have hoped for many years that Mario would die a horrible death. Yes that's right, Nintendo's mascot. Seeing him on too many titles to even count made me sick of him a long time ago. Not to mention his ridiculous "It's a me, Mario" crap. Now Galaxy is probably a very good game, but I am sure Mario is the same annoying character as in every game since he went 3D. After the endless amount of Mario games (Mario Golf, Tennis, Baseball, Kart, Volleyball, Soccer, Party, etc.) I would be fine if he was retired.
I tried to play Mario Sunshine, but I couldn't get past the over-cutesy world and characters. Blech. Not that everything needs to be super serious, dark and "badass", but it was overboard for me.
This has nothing to do with the quality of games mind you. I just can't stand the character. Fat, Italian plumber who has worn the same overalls for years. I guess Nintendo puts all of their innovation into the games (not a bad thing) and lets the character stay the same. Link and Samus are not whored out the way Mario is. You see them in their own games and Smash Bros, although Link was in the GC version of Soul Calibur 2.
Sorry......it's a personal issue I have.

Also, since the GC's library was brought up, as Nintendo-biased as IGN's list was they didn't include Nintendo's best GC game, Pikmin 2. Everyone should at least give that series a try.

This is a good thing. I think the strength of our list would be diversity. I'm trying to think of a balanced way to do it. I want it to be a bit different than these things usually come out.

Mario really is an awful, awful character, but I kind of like him for that.
I really resent the Crash Bandicoots and Jaks of this world where they have focus groups and market research to find out what they think the kids will find "cool". No one has any integrity or artistic vision any more.
So I kind of like that the most popular gaming icon of all time is some creepy blue-collar pederast that is the antithesis of anything cool.

Sad, isn't it, that Naughty Dog was started by two high-school kids who hid a picture of a topless woman in their Genesis RPG. They may only have been talented for their age, but at least they weren't boring.

I will give him that no doubt and I agree with you other statement about vision and integrity. There are ridiculous amounts of generic, "extreme", "in your face", "tough guy", "rebel w/ a good heart" stuff out there. Still there are plenty of games that pull it off well. There's a tendency for people to assume stuff that sold like shit sucks despite them not having experience with it. Misconceptions seem especially bad with the SMS and Lynx.
People read up that these systems were vastly outsold by their competition, and that they lacked third-parties; they figure these systems suck because of this. The misinformation gets regurgitated as fact. Then you have sites like IGN, run by gamers who grew up mostly on Nintendo and Sony systems, doing nothing to expose the underdogs and give them their deserved praise. It's an annoying cycle.

The correct answer is Mario Galaxy. I will also accept PW3, Planet Puzzle League, or Contra 4.
In the end, I voted for Halo 3.
Here's why:
Halo 3 is the perfection of the Halo franchise. The original Halo was cool for what it was, but it had too many long empty corridors. Too many boring levels. Too much repitition. I mean, it was cool, but there were really only 3 REALLY cool fights I can think of (fortifying that little fort near the beginning, storming the beach, and the fight in the snow part with all the vehicles).
Halo 2 was... different. A lot of focus was put on dual wielding, it had some really cool ideas, but it also had a lot of really lame ones. The game WAS long, but it was long for the wrong reasons. It had A LOT of filler. And playing as the Arbiter was cool... for one level. Later on it just got to the point where you just wanted to finish the fight with the Master Chief. Also, due to how the gameplay was setup, the online play was HORRIBLY unbalanced. The focus on dual wielding made being a cheap bastard almost a necessity, and while Halo 2 was a really cool game, overall it wasn't as good as it should have been. Of course, it wasn't even finished either. So while stuff like the Arbiter was necessary for the STORY of Halo, Halo 2 itself was kind of a step back.
And now there's Halo 3.
In Halo 3, there's is almost no filler. Every level is well designed, packed with action, and generally a blast to play. The EXCEPTION is the Cortana level, but its a Flood level so that goes without saying. Everything else though? Amazing! Fighting your way through the Jungle? Awesome. Trying to fend off the Covenant attack on the base? Insanely cool. Fighting scarabs? Nothing compares. Halo 3 was what we all wanted Halo to be when we played it. Halo 3 IS a game of the fort level, the beach, and the snow part in the original Halo. The battles in it are just GOOD! The AI is unprecedented. I mean, I know everyone talks about Bioshock's great AI, but it has NOTHING on Halo 3. In Halo 3, I can identify and kill the "squad leader" for a group, and the enemies will react accordingly. In Halo 3, I see THE COMPUTER taking defensive measures against my approach. In Halo 3 I have watched as a Brute chieftan dodged under my charged plasma shot and dove at me to hit me with the hammer. Its insane what the AI does on higher difficulty levels. And aside from maybe Crysis (which I haven't played), I don't think there exists anything that can compare. I've watched enemies pull marines out of the Warthog I was driving and kill them. I've seen the enemy try to flush me out into the range of snipers. If you're pegging away at a higher up Brute with a battle rifle, whats he going to do? Throw down a bubble shield and command his "squad" to go get you. I've seen a squad of Brutes charge and take me out after I killed a couple doing some "pop out, attack, hide" type stuff. And like I said, its crazy when you kill a squad leader and his troops just run off and go berserk. Its awesome.
And the enemies? Oh my God the Brutes are so much cooler to fight than Elites. There is no comparison. The Elites annoyed the hell out of me because they were kinda pussy like. You'd shoot them, they'd hide and recharge their shield, rinse and repeat. The Brutes are far more savage, and if you take down their armor it doesn't recharge, so they just run at you. Its nuts how different the Brutes and the Elite act.
And Halo 3 is GORGEOUS! Fuck whoever says it looks like Halo 2.5. Halo 3 is one of the best looking games out right now. It just looks amazing. A bit cartoony, but thats fine, its still totally awesome.
Of course, in Halo single player they've made a bigger deal out of the skulls. So now you can change the gameplay as you see fit. You can make every enemy rank up, you can make enemies throw more grenades, you can make there be less ammo in the levels, etc. Once you've finished Halo 3, you can modify the core game in so many ways and make it a new experience. There's also a score mode.
And multiplayer? Oh my God. Its still "Halo", so its no good for competitive level stuff IMO, but it is soooooo well balanced in terms of weapons. They fixed the problems from the first two and now its perfected. And that my friends, is awesome. If I can go through a fight using only my Assault Rifle, thats the shit.
Speaking of weapons, I love the weapons in Halo 3. They're so distinct, and yet all equally effective in their own way. And there's just some cool shit in there too... like the gravity hammer. Good times!
Thats not to say Halo 3 doesn't have its problems. In my opinion, it has one problem, but has a second psuedo problem.
The psuedo problem is that Normal mode is far too easy. Its so easy its almost stupid. If you haven't played Halo 3 on Heroic, you haven't played Halo 3. Regrettably, a lot of people found Halo 3 to be too short and too easy because they played on Normal initially. I find this is a shame, as Halo 3 is much longer in Heroic since the gun fights take a lot longer (you'll be pinned down for awhile several times, but damn you feel like a badass when you just rush in and waste the enemy).
The real problem is as follows:
Halo 3 does not end gracefully. Call of Duty 4 doesn't have a "boss fight" per se, but it ends VERY well. Everything leading up to the end and the actual final actions you do are all awesome. Halo 3 kinda falls apart once the Covenant are gone. In fact, its a shame that Halo 3 ends well AFTER you're done with the Covenant. If there had been one final dramatic Covenant battle to end all battles, it would've been cool. As is it ends just like the original. Which is fine, but everything leading up to that isn't. I mean, you take out the Covenant and... then you have to fight the Flood for 2 levels. That was kinda lame, and made the ending a lot less fun than the earlier parts of the game, which should NEVER be the case. Also, the bullshit "secret ending" was REALLY lame. If they had actually killed Master Chief, it would have been a fucking awesome ending. As is, they copped out and thus the ending of the series is a bit shallow.
But, I can overlook that problem. Because Halo 3 is fucking awesome. I love Halo 3. To me, it lived up to the astronomical hype. It has enough variety that I don't get kinda bored (truth be told, CoD4's single player did get kinda boring to me, even on Hardened), it has a great cinematic story, it has great multiplayer, and its just all around a fucking awesome game. So for me, Halo 3 was the best thing out this year, hands down.
Runner up would probably be Blue Dragon though. The only reason Mass Effect doesn't get that (it gets 3rd place, actually) is because there were some real let downs in Mass Effect (can only land on MAYBE one planet per solar system, combat is a very watered down GoW (though still good), and the vehicular parts could've been better). Also, if ever a game was too short, Mass Effect would be it.

Halo 3 is NOT one of the best looking games out right now. CoD4, Crysis, Bioshock, Unreal 3, Gears of War, Mass Effect... hell... pretty much any of the billion games using UE3.
I just don't see how it looks anything more than average. The engine is not doing anything that every other engine out there isn't doing.

I'd have to say I do think halo 3 looks nice its not one of the best looking games right now.

Uh... Halo 3 looks better than CoD4 and Mass Effect.
It looks "different" from Unreal 3 and Gears of War, but I wouldn't say either looks "better".

Playing Halo 3 and CoD4 360 on the same day, I was blown away at how much better CoD4 looked. I can understand preferring Halo 3 stylistically for the fantasy theme over realism but for pure detail, CoD4 is much more impressive.

THE LEEK SPIN!!! That one's my favorite. Advocate found the band that plays that song for me, and I have the MP3 loaded on my player. I play it in my car sometimes, either to annoy passengers or to please myself, usually both. I can't help but smile while that song is playing.

How is COD4 overall. I'll be finding out myself tomorrow morning, but I'm curious anyway.

I don't own the game yet but I played a few levels and some multiplayer at a friend's house. It's awesome. I'm not usually into the reality themed first-person shooters as much as fantasy ones but the action is really intense in CoD4.

If you don't mind paying full price for a 6 hour game, then COD4 totally rocks. Excellent from start to finish.
The multiplayer is excellent too, but requires a bit more dedication than I'm willing to give it (I'd rather just jump on Halo3 for a while).

Thing I like about CoD 4 is it goes for realist view, but doesn't play the wait and go slowly gameplay like ghost Recon and other tom Clancy games.

Mario Galaxy is possibly the best 3d platformer ever made. GOTY IMO.

CoD games have never been that way.

huh? What I mean to say is the looks real as in authentic locations, NPCs, and guns. But the gameplay is more fast pace and fraggy which is fine by me.

And what I meant is that CoD games have always been fast pace, never
like the Tom Clancy games.

Rock Band for sure. EDF2017 as my runner up. Halo 3 was amazing for two weeks, and I'll never play it again. Bioshock just didn't live up to SS2 for me. Mass Effect was dragged down by its technical flaws. Didn't play the rest.

Finally started playing Mario Galaxy. Fun game, but I still stand by Bioshock for my GOTY

Just started Bioshock. Fucking incredible. Not my choice over Galaxy, but fucking incredible nonetheless. Then again, that's why I hate a general "GOTY" award, as it results in these apples/oranges decisions.
But Halo 3 getting more votes than Bioshock? This does not bode well...

COD4. The most in depth, real feel campaign. The multiplayer is great too. Not saying that Halo doesnt possess any of these qualitys, but Halo is the samething its always been. COD4 opened up new horizons. Just my two cents, now im going away for another couple months to leave the boreds alone. J/K or am i..................

Just finished BioShock last night. Great game. I'm going to play it through again on a different setting.
I'm still trying to decide if I'll play Mass Effect, Crysis or CoD4 next.

just do COD next and then after a day (two tops) you can then move on to ME or Crysis.

Hm. Now I have to add Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations AND Zack & Wiki to my already packed list for contention (which was Persona 3, Super Mario Galaxy and Hotel Dusk)...a good year, that it was.

I got to play Galaxy for about an hour and while it was only a small taste I really like what I played. It was great to only have to put up with 5 min of story stuff and then get right to platform greatness.

I just finished it.....well, as much as I plan on finishing for a good long while. It was a pretty good game.

I should have this in no more than an HOUR! :O I doubt I'll change my vote though. Never been a fan of Mario.
