View Full Version : Lost Odyssey Famitsu scores
9/9/9/9
w00t! This makes me very happy. And before anyone shows up with some, "Well Sakaguchi said 20 hours of gameplay and 20 hours of movies," I just want you to all know that I did a speed run through Mass Effect and it took me 8 hours.
So if there's only 20 hours of gameplay in Lost Odyssey (whereas I spent 60-70 in Blue Dragon... so far) then thats fine, it will still be totally awesome and yay.

Well it's not the "only 20 hours of gameplay" part that bugs me as much as the massive amounts of videos and text-only parts that scare me.
I'm not digging the vibe on this one as much as blue dragon, but if the gameplay is more to my liking I might still be interested. I have pretty picky tastes in RPGs so I might have wait for someone likeminded to give me impressions.

I think it might be time for me to give another RPG a chance and this could be the one.

I'm interested in the game but Famitsu is like the least trustable source for reviews on the planet.
Eh, this is true. But, it was big news on other forums, so I thought I might as well post it here too since I'm looking forward to it.
Though I somewhat agree with Frog in that I'm not as hyped about this one as I was about Blue Dragon. Especially since last time I spoke with Yankee he said it looked like FFX.
But I'm still very much looking forward to it, since IMO Blue Dragon was fucking awesome, though that may have been more helped by Artoon and less by Sakaguchi.

Interesting I awlays felt that most people held Famitsu in very high regard due to their reviews. I don't read or follow th emag but I'm curious why you guys don't trust their reviews. What in your opinion is the most reliable published (web or paper) place for gaming reviews? Especially in light of the recent Gamespot / Kane and Lynch fiasco we all love to hate.
Well, its generally believed that Famitsu scores are purchased, rather than earned.
I don't know how much credit can be given to this, and I think its turned into more of a problem in recent years, as a long time ago, back in the day of the beloved final white box from Sega, getting a perfect score in Famitsu was a big deal.

No thank you to this one. I read books, I watch movies/tv, I play video games. I never managed to get into Star Ocean PS2 because it wouldn't shut up and let me play, so this one is a complete pass. Too bad, I thought it looked interesting for a while there.

Nearly all Japanese reviews to one extent or another, by the way, not just Famitsu.

Speaking of which, Gamespot is now running huge Alienware ads on both sides of the page. Any predictions? :D

Yeah. This system of scoring is just a byproduct of the Japanese culture. It's not so explicit that there's a wad of bills being handed off in exchange for a particular score-- it's a matter of maintaining relationships between companies. The Japanese are, in the public eye, very subdued and very subtle when it comes to dishing out criticism of any sort. There's generally a lot of beating around the bush if it's even brought up in the first place. There's so much value put on building and maintaining good relationships in their business world.
The idea that Famitsu's reviews are 'bought' is a misnomer, I think. You just have to know how to wade through their 'courtesy' to interpret the scores. If a game is super-highly anticipated, it might receive nines instead of tens if the reviewers didn't care for it so much. The scale applied to these scores is dynamic in nature, which is why I think us Westerners don't tend to put a lot of stock in them.
These are just my perceptions.

I think you have something there Koda. Its partially a difference in culture and we need to acknowledge that. But even still aside from the pinnacle of gaming sites, Got-Next, wherelse does the beacon of truth shine?

I tend to go by individual reviewers, not sites.

I can see what you mean but I am still talking in more general terms here. Is there no mainstream / large site / mag that does a solid job overall? Just curious about opinion here.

I tend to trust the Hardcore Gamer reviews. :)

well generally if a game is getting above a 9 at just about all major sites its probably a pretty good game (looking at gamerankings.com most games up there with high averages are good games) But after that a lot of bias comes into play. And I trust people's opinions here way more than major sites.
I HATED Xeno Saga because of how it had so many damn cut scenes and wouldn't just STFU and let me play. I'll have to wait and see how this one pans out before I run out to buy it.
I will let you guys know.
And I can assure you, if I wind up watching it too much, I will probably wind up putting it down and not finishing it, for sure.

Thats probably my ticket too. Sadly enough BD is also in that boat. Like I have been saying for awhile now.... Too many damn good games to play and not enough god damn time!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah! Totally forgot about that one but I was quite intruiged by the story concept and the graphics looked like hand drawn bliss to me. If you or anyone else has given that game a shot I wanna hear your thoughts. Come to think of it I don't recall it being discussed at all on these boards.

Blue Dragon dude.
Eternal Sonata was fucking retarded. Enchanted Arms is a better game than that pile of boring garbage.
At any rate, new montage for Lost Odyssey at IGN:

I thought Eternal Sonata was great. Last few hours kinda dragged, but up till then I liked it far more than Blue Dragon.
Fun cutscene from the game:

I do like how Kaim is very much like D from Vampire Hunter D though, and he's not a whiney bitch like most JRPG heroes these days.

Yeah, I like characters like this much better than the whiny bitches with no confidence
Also, if anyone is interested, apparently Feel Plus (the developer doing it, Mistwalker is just some overseer production company really), is composed of the people who made the Shadow Hearts games.
Oh, and here's a video of... something. Apparently boss fights can consist of fighting an army. :wtf:

Also, proof about the Shadow Hearts thing (though I've never played one of these so I dunno if those were good or not):

I just thought of something...
That "reliving your stuff via traveling" will probably be implemented via sleeping at Inns at various towns...
... much like Shadow's dreams in FF6. :o
Yay!

jokes aside acutally does sound like a pretty cool feature. Maybe having all that story won't be as bad as it sounds.
Did you play Mass Effect?
Did you like Mass Effect?
How long did it take you to beat Mass Effect?
Because I can tell you right now, ignoring side missions, Mass Effect's gameplay is roughly 8 hours long (and playing straight through for most people takes 17-20 hours, so thats 9-12 hours of cut scenes/talking and 8 hours of gameplay, roughly).
So yeah, I don't think Lost Odyssey having some movies and some literature in it is going to be too big of a problem for fans of Mass Effect. :)

Short of having removed all synapses from the brain that register pleasant feelings, how does one have a bad time with Xenosaga?
