Yup, I'm just going to make list threads until the boards go nuts with posting or something.

Anyways, by next-gen, I mean the consoles (Xbox360, Wii, and the other one) and the PC stuff. No handhelds.

Anywho, mine would be as follows:

10. No More Heroes (Wii) - Vulgar. Violent. Funny. And totally awesome. No More Heroes is one of the few Wii games I had a blast with, and it not only rocked because of the violence and crudeness, and it really had some solid gameplay that made for some awesome light saber duels. Good stuff Grasshopper!

09. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) - In my opinion, the absolute best 3D Mario game as well as the best 3D platformer ever. It was pretty easy overall, but some of the extra stuff added that little bit of hardcore platforming needed for fools like me. Its also the best looking Wii game I've ever seen and the music was just great.

08. Crackdown (XB360) - Its GTA only minus the mundaneness of... GTA. Few things can compete with searching the city over for agility orbs, leaping from rooftop to rooftop, and those epic "Shaigen" bosses that live in towers that make you want to play "Real Folk Blues" while going up them towards your showdown.

07. Excite Truck (Wii) - My favorite game on the Wii. Easily. I loves it. Its so much fun. If Sega didn't suck now, this is the type of thing I like to think they'd make.

06. Earth Defense Force 2017 (XB360) - This would proabably be waaaaay up on the list if it had online co-op. As is, it does not. But thats OK, its still the best co-op experience on the 360 in my opinion. Pure arcade style fighting hundreds of enemies arcadey shooting fun.

05. Gears of War (XB360)- What can I say? It mainstreamed a "duck and cover" technique that everybody and their mama is now copying (yes yes Frog, I know killswitch did it first). Regardless, its still one of the best looking games in existence, online co-op is awesome, and the multiplayer had me hooked for weeks!

04. Blue Dragon (XB360, Hard Mode) - Just the clarify, Hard Mode is the only real mode in Blue Dragon. Without it, the game kinda falls apart since you'll get caught up in grinding but find you're ridiculously overpowered. But with Hard Mode, its almost as difficult and requiring of strategy as Lost Odyssey. But for seriously, I just love the world they made for BD. I love the music. I love the "fight circle" idea they had. I love the ending. Its just a great game to me.

03. Halo 3 (XB360) - Of course Halo 3 is on here. Its Halo 3. God knows how much time I've put into it online shooting the shit out of fools (and that amount of time pales in comparison to most!). But my main love for Halo 3 comes from the campaign truthfully. Its intense, the AI is REALLY advanced, and overall its just a great ride. It has its downsides (the flood...), but other moments (SCARABS!) more than make up for it.

02. Ninja Gaiden 2 (XB360) - The best action game ever made in my opinion. Yes, the violence is totally awesome, but the gameplay is just incredible. I love it! I can't quit playing it. Right now I have two saves, one for Mentor Difficulty and the other where I'm playing through just using the claws. This is one of the few times where you feel like a total badass in a videogame, and you're doing more than just mashing on one button. And the boss fights are top notch. In my opinion, this game far outdoes the original, and is the best thing Itagaki has ever done in his life.

01. Lost Odyssey (XB360) - No game has writing that can compare. The music is second to nothing found in this generation. The voice acting is some of the best in a JRPG (or hell, even most anime I'm sure), and the characters are just incredibly well done. The combat demands you use strategy and strips away various bullshit mainstays of JRPGs past (forced level-grinding, buying better armor that the town you just walked in just HAPPENS to have), some of the dungeons have fairly well done puzzles, and all in all, its just the best "classic style" JRPG since Final Fantasy VI ("classic style" mentioned because nothing in existence, now or in the future, will ever top PDSaga). Lost Odyssey took me back to when I was a kid and loved JRPGs, and its one of the few that I is as good to me as the ones I played back in the day. I loves it. Especially the ending. And the dream sequences. Only videogame I can think of where the actual writing brought a tear to my eye multiple times.

And... thats it. Um, post yours now... or something...

09. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) - In my opinion, the absolute best 3D Mario game as well as the best 3D platformer ever.

Interesting. I got bored silly playing this game. I'm at about 45 stars and I haven't touched it since. I should dig it out again.

My list reflects the fact that I just don't play as many games as I used to :)

10. Oblivion
9. Beautiful Katamari
8. Omega Five
7. Halo 3
6. COD4
5. Wii Sports
4. Mario Party 8 -- yes I realize this is the 8th f'ing release of the same damn game. But when you gather a big group of friends it's still a blast. And that's what counts.

3. Geometry Wars

2. XNA -- No not a game per se but still very cool and very forward thinking of MS to put this out there.

1. Orange Box -- Simply incredible. Portal alone puts this at #1 for me, Team Fortress 2 and all of HL2? Such an awesome release. This is easily top 5 best releases ever if you ask me. I've put more hours into OB than all of my other current gen games combined, and then some.

You know shinji, I actually thought of adding Red Steel to my list as well. I still think the game is horribly underrated by people who didn't get to Japan in it.

God, everyting after you got to Japan was just amazing. :drooling:

Let's see here...
In no particular order

Oblivion-Any generation that sees an Elder Scrolls game is a good one by me. This is the crown jewel of the series.

Bioshock-Damn good FPS dripping with style. What more can you ask for?

Gears of War-Next gen KillSwitch? Sign me up.

Crysis-Some of the best FPS action in a while. Damn cool game with a shitload of originality for such a
beaten-path genre.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic-Coolest game ever. It's a damn shame they neutered the amazing skill system for the 360 release. This is a game that should be played by as many people as possible.

Medieval Total War 2- I am a strategy gamer at heart. Total war continues to set the bar for the genre. I have to love them for making turn based strategy games in an era where the genre is nearly dead.

Skate-Fuck the haters. I used to love Tony Hawk, and this game made me like skating games again. One of the best games to just chill out and play, and an objective structure that actually rewards playing that way.

Condemned- Brought the horror back to to gaming. Awesome combat, creepy creepiness, too damn fun.

Call of Duty 4- What can I say that has not been said?

Portal- If you didn't like Portal, you don't like games.

I have the sinking feeling I meant to put something in there, but can't remember what.

Absolutely loved it.

It's pretty slow for the prelude and Novus campaigns... but then the Heiarchy and Masari get much better...

Then there are the "situational" conquest modes, skirmish, multiplayer, etc.

When I got it, it's all I played for a couple months.

The controls just feel so clumsy. If feels like Im stumbling my way through each mission. Ill give it another shot though.

What's your control problem? If they feel clumsy to you, then there is a shortcut you don't know about.

What are you trying to do?

Hunter
07-01-2008, 08:34 PM
Just running around selecting units and giving them orders. I've never been good at memorizing shortcuts too. I should probably get a printout.

Conjoshus
07-01-2008, 08:46 PM
Yeah, that will make a world of difference for this game. One thing you might want to burn into memory though is that when you're in a big crowd, you can easily cycle through enemy targets with the D pad. The D pad will "snap" to your target.

The Back button assigns new "groups"

The A button is your selection tool (hold it down to paint). Double tapping A will select every attack unit on screen. Double tapping X will select your entire army... there's also a shortcut to select all of a certain type but I can't remember it off hand...

All four shoulder buttons do something... one brings up your research tree, one brings up your groups for selection (will also select a unit of a specific type that isn't doing anything), access your build que, etc.

You can also zip around the map instantly, scroll quickly, issue orders without having the destination on screen, and more.... Tons of things to work on there :)

EDIT: If you have the game, we can fire it up sometime :). You can also add enemy AIs to make a total of 4 players...

Hunter

I have it. Ill try and get on some time.

The Conjoshus post above me proves why sometimes PC games should remain ... PC games.

Conjoshus
07-01-2008, 09:07 PM
I would agree RTS games are better on the PC in terms of pick up and play... but after getting used to the controller design, I can work almost as fast on the 360 for Universe at War as I can on the PC.

LOTR BFME 2, however, there is no comparison. I haven't played the PC version of C&C3 yet... and I'm sure Halo Wars will control just fine.

I will have Starcraft 2 on PC the day it comes out and will likely also buy it for a console if it ever releases.

Nothing wrong with that...

It should also be noted FPS games are generally better on PC as well, but I snag most of them on a console to play on the TV as opposed to a monitor...

If only the 360 also supported the Mouse....

Well, my list would only be populated with Wii titles...so I'll do a Wii and DS top 3.

Wii
1. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Zack & Wiki

DS
1. Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney and the Phoenix Wright series
2. Hotel Dusk
3. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

I'm not sure that I have the heart to do a list without handheld games. The DS is like... my favorite thing ever.

Also, where does the line get drawn for PC games? Nothing before 2007?

Well, several people listed DS games so... I guess you might as well. :p

For PC games... I'd say around 2006.

I think I can scrape one together, then. :p Considering I don't have a 360 or PS3, my list would probably go something like....

10 // The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)
9 // Space Invaders Extreme (NDS)
8 // Daigasso! Band Bros. (NDS)
7 // Etrian Odyssey (NDS)
6 // Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
5 // Supreme Commander (PC)
4 // Unreal Tournament III (PC)
3 // Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Wii)
2 // Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (NDS)
1 // The Witcher (PC)

UT has always been my FPS 'home' and the only thing keeping this from being higher is the minuscule community. =( I thought that Radiant Dawn was an amazing iteration of Fire Emblem with a compelling story and level of difficulty. As far as Pokemon goes... there's just way too much statistical stuff to crack out on if you want to battle at a competitive level, which is a good thing... insane replayability and lots of fun.

The Witcher was probably my favorite game of 2007, though. It had a few technical quirks, but I wasn't bothered by them. There's the Enhanced Edition coming out, too. The story is implemented so well in this game and mechanically it really paves its own trail. Lots of good ideas that work, lots of atmosphere, lots of fun. I felt like this struck the perfect balance between being driven by a plot that's interesting and relevant and having those open-ended elements like exploration and decision making.

Nah, didn't mean anything by it. Not to turn this into a D&D discussion, but I really am torn on 4th Edition. I really dig the style of the books. The game just seems off to me. I may need to buy the things, and sit down and play a round or two, I might like it.

I really dug The Witcher. I never got around to playing a whole lot of it. I should try again. The combat was top notch, a nice change of pace for that genre.
