Sony has pulled the 2.40 firmware update (http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/02/ps3-firmware-2-40-is-live/) from both its in-console update and website after some users reported that the firmware has bricked their system. SCEA PR director Patrick Seybold told Joystiq that Sony is "looking into it right now and will work with those customers directly to address any issues they may be experiencing."

I will say one thing... MS 360 updates don't brick their systems. Not that I have heard of anyways. :p

Actually I think I have heard of some updates bricking systems. I don't know exactly when, but I do remember hearing of it.

Yeah, I've heard this too, though I think it's mostly because of a problem with the flashing process (i.e. gets stuck in mid-update) and not an update that was faulty or incompatible with some models.

Infact, even the Wii has bricked as the result of firmware updates. They all do it.

QFT. thats why u should NEVER update as soon as something new is available. i always wait a few days to see if its really bug free. im glad i waited with wii. im glad i waited with PS3.

I was loling at all the sony haters covering this story. 360s have bricked since launch everytime there was a spring update. 360 HDDVD players have bricked because of firmware updates, Wii's have bricked as well. To be honest there is a chance of any electronics bricking when you're installing new firmware.
I didn't get a chance to try 2.40, because it was already pulled, But I updated to 2.41 a couple days ago since it's back online. I had a few friends running 2.40 the day it was out and they had no problems.
From what I heard the system would hang longer than usual at startup after the install on certain PS3s, and people were "turning off" their systems like dumbasses, which will of course lead to a bricked system because the firmware didn't have a chance to finish.
I don't think Sony was so much to blame for this.

Who needs a firmware update? 360's brick themselves. No internet connection required. That's a little something called forward-thinking.
:p
I'm always a little wary of updating firmware on any device, though. I get a bit nervous when I have to flash BIOS or anything like that.

Yup, I updated to 2.40 then to 2.41. No problems with either, though the in-game XMB for 2.40 seemed jerky compared to 2.41.
