SCEA president Jack Tretton has aired his feelings on Square Enix's decision to nix PS3 exclusivity for Final Fantasy XIII. During a roundtable chat this morning, Tretton said that he was disappointed by the decision, but not exactly caught off guard.

"Am I disappointed by it? Yes," Tretton told us, adding: "Am I surprised by it? No." He was quick to stress that the game remains a PS3 exclusive in Japan, but that "seeing as there isn't that big of a [PS3] installed base in [there], I don't know how big of a coup that is for us."

Speaking to the concept of paying third parties for exclusives, Tretton said that Sony has "invested so much money in the [PS3] hardware" that it simply "can't write checks for exclusive software."

Echoing statements made by Sony Worlwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida prior to E3, Tretton said that Sony's is more focused on exclusive titles from its own teams. "You've got to create platform-defining franchises that you own," he said. "It's the only way you're going to guarantee exclusivity going forward."

Its so weird to me how Tretton walks around sqawking about Sony's first party exclusives, while Microsoft makes just as many exclusives for their system.

You mean like FABLE, Project Gotham Racing, Halo, Age of Empires, Forza, Kameo, Banjo, Perfect Dark Zero, Viva Pinata, Crackdown (yes, Realtime Worlds said MS owns it), etc?

Though Sony has some huge properties to compete with this though... God of War, Twisted Metal, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, Gran Turismo, etc.

I would agree with JP here... seems to be matching up pretty evenly there to me.

You forgot Fable and Too Human.

He said "etc."

So technically, he included Azurik and Nightcaster in there as well. All bases were covered.

All of them.

Fine.

Josh, I'm sorry, but by the laws of this board, as decreed by Hunter, Fable must be listed whenever one is making a list of IPs that belong on the Xbox360. And it must be listed near the beginning, where it should rightfully be. Please keep this in mind next time the urge hits to make a list pertaining to Microsoft's IPs.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

*corrected* :)

Sidenote, Halo Wars, Chronicles, etc are all included under "Halo."

Does MS actually own Too Human or does SK retain the rights?

I think SK owns the rights.

Very well, carry on Mr. Joshus.

Too Human, is exclusive and being published by MS, I'm not sure if they own it though.
