Alright, the significant other is a huge Shining Force fan, so I figured I'd reserve the new Fire Emblem game (which is a remake of the first as I understand it) for her for Valentine's Day or something.

BUT! I've never played a Fire Emblem game. I've only played the Shining Force games. So... I dunno, how does Fire Emblem compare? It always looked like it was virtually the same to me, but like I said, I never actually played it.

The reviews I looked up all seemed to be down on the DS one mainly because its a remake of the original, but Morgan has never played (nor is even aware of) a Fire Emblem game, so I doubt that'd be a problem. These days she just plays that Shining Force remake on GBA constantly... so I figured this might be cool.

Anywho, um, yeah, help a brutha out Nintendo fans. ;)

Well, I imagine Shining Force is BETTER, but does Fire Emblem compare at all?

Like, if someone is a HUGE fan of Shining Force, will they find enjoyment out of Fire Emblem?

well this was a capcom game right? i remember having the snes version, it should be pretty comparable. probably getting bad reviews cause it's more than likely close to a straight port and not very upgraded.

Na, Nintendo made Fire Emblem.

I watched some friends play the end scenario of Fire Emblem. They were really into it, and the layout was very reminiscent of Shining Force. It did lack the Climax charm in my opinion, but I say if she likes Shining Force, she'll get a kick out of Fire Emblem too.

If you ever played the Advance Wars games for the GBA, it's like that but slightly more complicated in a high fantasy setting. Shining Force players will enjoy it immensely. Very involving...

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

Ha, she's going to get a DS game overload now. :p I snagged her Away: Shuffle Dungeon earlier (since it was $10). So... yes. :)

I like what I've played of Fire Emblem more than what I've played of Shining Force (haven't played SF3). I know that probably edges on blasphemy around here, but the Fire Emblem games I've played have just been extremely fucking good as far as story, stage design, balance and pacing....

I haven't played any of the handheld versions, and their sprites/presentation have always looked a bit strange to me. One thing I like is that there tend to be a bunch of "optional" characters that can be killed, recruited, missed entirely, etc. Once a character dies they're out for good, and it's fun seeing how that influences the between-battle scenes. Path of Radiance (Gamecube) was totally on the easy side, but Radiant Dawn (Wii) was just the opposite -- most people I talked to didn't have the patience to get very far because of the difficulty, but to me it made for a much more enjoyable game.

I dunno. It's not something you hear very often, but Fire Emblem is my favorite thing that comes out of Nintendo, even with my limited experience. I haven't played FE1, which is what this is, so I'm not too sure what to expect this time. I have it preordered, though.

I am a huge fan of Fire Emblem. ^_^ The new DS game is a remake of the NES original, if I recall correctly. Koda pretty much sums it up - I prefer the portable ones to Path of Radiance, myself (FE7, which is plain ol' Fire Emblem here, is my favorite of the bunch), but the series is excellent all the way around. The movement system between SF and FE is very similar, but battling is a bit different. Recruiting is a vital part of the game, and there is NO resurrection for dead characters, which adds to the tension. I want to get the DS one myself, but I can't afford it right now, so *sigh*
