View Full Version : So I set up my PS3 last night..

...and damn it took a while.
I have a PSN name, but I might change it if possible. If not I might just start a new account. I tried about 15 or so versions of "Luminous" and I couldn't get any to be accepted. BOOO!!!!! I went with Lumi117 but I think I hate that so I might try and see if I can get them to change it without starting a new account.
Well anyway of course it had to update a while (I expected that) when I tried to sign on to PSN for the first time. No big deal, but it downloaded pretty slow (of course I have no idea how big the update was). Then it had to install which also took a while. Again not an issue. Then like an idiot I went to d/l the free PSN game PAIN that comes with the 160GB. 444MB! So I expected that to take a while and it did. Then when I went to start the game up there were two updates to the game (100+MB, not sure if that was each one or what) and that seemed to take forever.
I finally start the game, which is like the driver abusing part of the Flatout series, and you have to completely play through the tutorial before you can unlock the actual meat of the game. Wow that was annoying.
I do like the menu system (familiar to me as I once owned a PSP). I still am not a huge fan of the controller, but I am looking forward to playing Resistance 1&2, Uncharted, Killzone 2, and a few others.

You can't change usernames, just make another one. You can make as many as you want. You might want to make a Japanese account too, there are a lot of sweet demos/themes/free games that you can't get on the US PSN Yeah, updates can take awhile, downloads from the PStore go a lot faster for some reason. Always download system updates from the net if possible and put them on the PS3 via USB, they can take forever over the PS3.
If you're playing a game for the first time, there is most likely an update for it you'll have to download before you start playing, annoying I know but oh well.

I'm assuming at least 3 hours here. My goodness.... I didn't realize PAIN was that big. I thought it was just some silly game about hurting dummies. At least you were smart enough not to install Home. In the end, they really gotta get rid of the mandatory tutorial bullshit.

I am going to call them in a few minutes to see if I can change it, if not I am going to just switch the email address on the current account and then use my regular email address for the new account. I would rather have the option to pay to change it. :|
I am sure any game will have updates, I am used to that on the 360, but they are usually real quick. I shouldn't have to d/l system updates off the net and then put them on a USB drive because they take so long.

I am used to Live games being less than 200MB so yeah I was taken back a bit. The whole setup process (including the PAIN deal) took over 2 hours.
I have no desire to d/l Home at the moment.

Yeah so if I want to change my PSN name I will have to start a new account. I called and they didn't even offer any other way to do it. BOO! I will see what I can do when I get home. If I can do it without too much hassle I will. If not I will just stick with this one.

Yeah, when I first got my PS3, I was incredibly annoyed by how long everything took. Wait till you throw in your first "mandatory install" disc.
In the end, I got used to it but that took a little while.
Sony's customer support is FAR worse than any other I've had to deal with. There probably is a way for them to modify your profile, the rep just didn't know how to do it :)
When my brother finished fighting back and forth with Sony about defective PS3s (he had three back-to-back), he asked for some kind of compensation since they were sending him replacements that were already broken for a period of four months. They said they were going to give him a 60 dollar Bluray disc if he really felt it was that important and instead, they just sent him a free Spiderman 3 (what was included for free with the systems at the time anyway).
He called them up and said Spiderman 3 wasn't a 60 dollar disc, infact, the most you even find it for anywhere is 30. The guy replied, "we set the MSRP of the disc, it's up to retailers to sell it for whatever they want. So yes, it's a 60 dollar deal."
Go Sony! Woo!!!
It should also be noted you can NOT make use of your warranty unless you keep the original sales receipt. Don't lose it Luminous! Even if Sony knows when you got the console, they will still say tough!

Thanks Josh, I am usually one that keeps his receipts so I will definitely not lose this one.
I understand some of the reasons for not being able to change an ID, but they have all of your info so it's not like you can just switch it to avoid any problems you might have caused yourself. You know, acting like an asshole online, cheating, etc. No worries, I will get it all sorted out this evening and maybe actually get to play a retail game a little....lol......

You cant change your name, I have tried many times. If you are going to make a new one do it now before you lose a bunch of saves and such. Make an EU accont and dl the KZ2 demo!!!

Oh yeah I will change it when I get home (if I do). That way all I will lose is the one trophy I gained in PAIN....lol. I just might make a EU account and get the demo.
Edit:You can use the same home address for a second account, right? I know I need 2 email addresses (not an issue).

FYI it's useful to also make a Hong Kong account, they have everything the Japanese store has, but everything is in english. You can buy points cards for the HK and Japan store from ncsx.com. There are a lot of PSOne games that we will never get up to buy.

Yeah I have USA, Japan and Hong Kong. But after you do it you just log in and out, so it's worth it. And all downloaded content is available to every account.
An easy way to do it is to name them like LUMINOUSinJapan and LUMINOUSinHK, so you know which is which, since you won't actually ever be gaming with those accounts.

Good call, except every combination of Luminous I tried was rejected....LOL. Hence the awesome Lumi117. The more I see it the more I know I have to at least attempt to get a new account going.

At least you could add a 1, I tried so many numbers and a few letters added on to Luminous for a PSN name and none of them worked. :frown: There are a bunch of other Luminous(add letter/number here) on Live.

Thanks.
I was trying to stick close with Luminous, but it was not happening. So I had to go with Wolverine. Darth Wolverine was available, but I didn't want to take the geek creed to new heights with that....lol...
