Using the buttons for shooting takes a little getting used too, but I killed 2 hours this morning on this like it was nothing. Anyone else play the portable version? So fun.

Yeah I love it, it was a great game on the PS3 and it works really well on the PSP. It is still funny to me that the PS3 is the console to own for serious shmup fans, never would have guessed that going into this gen.

I don't know. There are a fair amount of shooters on the... Japanese XBOX360. That said, it is somewhat surprising that the PS3 has a good amount of shooters of the DLC variety. I should play Everyday Shooter later. Thanks for the reminder fellas...

Are you high?

XBLA (sorta-shmups-but-not-really):

Galaga Legions
Galaga
Centipede
Time Pilot
Space Giraffe
Power Up Forever (also on PS3?)
Space Invaders Extreme (coming soon)

... and probably a lot more in that category that I'm unaware of (since I focus on true shmups, not big on the psuedo-shmups).

Regardless, the 360 is already dominating all of LAST GEN in terms of shmups, the competition in THIS gen in so far as that genre goes is fucking LAUGHABLE to any "serious shmup fan".

Then again, a "serious shmup fan" would probably cringe at arena shooters like Geometry Wars or Everyday Shooter being referred to as "shmups". Hell, "serious shmup fans" would probably argue for hours about calling Galaga and Space Invaders shmups.

That is all well and good but how many of those are new games, let alone available in the US? Plus there is not one game on the list that should be mentioned in the same sentence as Super Stardust HD, plus Everyday Shooter and Blast Factor are great as well. This is one area that I have been extremely disappointed by the 360. I bought Powerup Forever the other day just because I was desperate for a shooter to play on 360.

When has a US release ever been the determining factor in a console's "shmup library"?

OK, if thats the case, the Saturn had a pretty lackluster shmup library.

Well, first off, Super Stardust isn't a "shmup".

Second, um... you've apparently never played the Raiden Fighter games, which are some of the all time best classic 2D shooters ever made. And you've apparently never played Ketsui either... because that one is generally considered Cave's all time great.

And Death Smiles is just going to be fucking awesome.

Um, R-Type Dimensions came out a week ago. And if you've been disappointed by the 360's "shmup" library then you apparently haven't been looking into it very hard.

I downloaded the demo for R-type but thought it was meh, and for $15 no fucking way. All those games you mentioned are old games right? I want new HD games, not out-dated arcade ports.

R-Type wasn't a new game but its not an out-dated port. And there are plenty of new shmups on 360. :-/

Then I don't think you should be trying to say what a "serious shmup fan" would or wouldn't want, because I doubt there's a "serious shmup fan" in existence that gives a flying fuck about HD. Hell, most of us would be happy with S-Video or some 30 inch CRT.

In so far as the games I listed, Death Smiles came out last year and is getting a high res upgrade. DDP: DOJ and Ketsui X with both also have high res updates.

The 360 has a lot of shooters (in japan) but most of them are just coinop ports, which is great if you like playing those games. Blast Factor, SSDHD and Everyday Shooter are "real" shooters, and they are completely original titles (not ports), so don't dismiss them so easily.

Super Stardust is easily one of the best done shooters I've ever played, it's such a complete game. Until you play it you won't understand, it's way better than geometry wars as well.

No... those wouldn't be "shmups" in the classical definition of the term.

When I say I like "shmups", I mean I like games like the Thunder Force series or Gradius or Radiant Silvergun or Sky Shark so on and so forth. Not the arena shooter bullshit that took off because of Geometry Wars.

jp is the hardcore shmup king, I think he knows what he's talking about. Seems to me that PS3 would be the Casual/Mainstream shmup console, and 360 would be the hardcore shmuper console this gen.

I agree with that, I just think that the PS3 is the console getting new games, which is surprising to me. I wish that the 360 was getting games as good as SSHD or Blast Factor or Everday Shooter. I wish ?MS would push for more games like that, I love Geo Wars 2, but it is pretty much it on 360. Galaga Legions was alright but I got bored of it pretty quick. Powerup Forever is a step in the right direction but it is not that good of a game.

Death Smiles, Raiden IV, and Otomedius G, while originally out in arcades, are pretty fucking new.

But, like I said, I really don't care for the arena shooter craze, so I cannot relate to you at all there. I started viewing those in 2007 the same as I started viewing FPSs back then: overdone, played out, and more times than not, completely derivative.

Well, if those types of games count, 360 has Mutant Storm. The second one is awesome.

Mutant Storm Empires was pretty neat.

Geometry Wars 2 was interesting as well, though I got tired of it rather quickly.

I loved Mutant Storm, never got Empires though since I did not like the demo, good call though Hunter.

Senko no Ronde Rev.X

No way does that belong on a list of shooters. There are a few original games on those lists, Heavy Weapon was great and I really liked Mutant Storm, but most are just ports of older games. I bought IKARUGA and regretted it since I had already played a bunch of it before. I still do want some ports, I am really hoping we get Radiant Silvergun, but I also wish we got new fresh games like SSHD or Everyday Shooter. The 360 really doesnt have anything like those games.
