Telegraph: Rapelay virtual rape game banned by Amazon

"It is intolerable that anyone would purchase a game that simulates the criminal offence of rape," he told the Belfast Telegraph.

Rapelay, which was released in 2006, encourages players to force the virtual woman they rape to have an abortion. If they are allowed to give birth the woman throws the player's character under a train, according to reviews of the game. It also has a feature allowing several players to team up against individual women.

I think this goes a bit further then just merduring people. This is meant to be as shocking as possible. It is just crazy to me that a country that censors games like Halo 3 and Fallout 3 says that it is okay to sell trash like this. At least over here games like this get a rating of AO and cant be sold in any stores.

The country doesn't censor Halo or Fallout, the companies do it voluntarily to get lower ratings. Lower ratings that are obviously of no use to a game like RapeLay.

It's exactly the same as how studios will censor films to get an R rating here, even though hardcore pornography exists uncensored. It's really not that crazy. One is a mainstream product, the other's main selling point is the fact that it does show graphic uncensored images.

Fallout 3 Censored for Japan

Blood content will undergo moderation, according to Bethesda (tranlated press release), and the game's 'Power of the Atom' side-quest will no longer feature the option to detonate a nuclear bomb. The name of a weapon has also changed as it was deemed "inappropriate" for the country.

Fallout 3, in recent months, has been familiar with the policies of content censorship. Two weeks ago the game's trailers were requested for removal by the ESRB, and the critically acclaimed RPG undertook a major toning-down to be granted Australia's delicate MA15+ rating after the game was refused classificaton there. Microsoft had also announced that the game will not be shipping to India, citing 'cultural sensitivities'.

The game is sheduled to launch in Japan this December.

I will say that in the US it seems violence gets a pass and sex is always censored, but I still see no point whatsoever in a game like this. I guess you could argue that if games like GTA aren't making people murderers than this ridiculous game will not make people rapists. Still, this game is all about rape, GTA is not just about killing (although most of it is). I guess if you don't deal with sex offenders all that much you can see past this. I just can't.


Violence is way more prevelant in gaming and can be viewed in similar ways, but to a point. I don't think you can compare shooters like Halo, Gears, Resistance, even CoD to a game like this. Manhunt is a different story though. Even a game like God of War, violent as it is, goes in a different direction - mythological fiction. This game is just about raping women in a real world setting. No need for it, IMO. I can say the same for Manhunt though.

A lot of crazy shit comes out of Japan, and I really wish a lot of it should go away. Yeah, we murder in games a lot.. but most of the time, there's a story that justifies it (not all the time, like with the GTA series). Regardless, this game is pretty fucked up. I don't think something like rape should be made into a game for fun. From what the article said, it doesn't sound like there's anything else to do in the game. So it much be like 'touch here, poke there, slap her face, push her down and rape her'..

When I was in Japan, there were these stores that sold games and anime shit on the 1st floor, and then when you went up to the 2nd and 3rd floors it was all PORN. As much as I love the people of Japan and that country, I've been losing my taste for the majority of the games coming from there in recent times. I'll still cherish the memory of playing a train operator game while I was in Matsumoto. It actually was pretty fun at the time :p
