Man, this is a blast from the past. I never owned one of those things, but I wish I had. I had a friend who had XBand for the genesis in 1995 and we'd play Mortal Kombat over it all the time, it was fun as hell at the time, lag and all.
I did however own a Saturn Netlink (after it was already dead) and I have good memories of surfing the web on that thing and even playing a bunch of online matches with certain netlink friends I had in other states. Me and this guy I knew both had twinsticks too, and we'd have some fun VO matches, the only thing that sucked was the long distance charges, but we'd play them in off-peak hours so it wasn't too bad for a 30 minute session.
It blows my mind how much stuff Sega has pioneered into mainstream gaming, I hope they get the credit they deserve someday when people look back.

I always wanted one, but the cable company at neither my dad's house nor my mom's carried the damned service.

I think that service was ahead of its time. If you could pay a flat fee per month and have access to every game on XBLA or PSN (not get to keep them, but stream them) I think everyone and their mom would be all over it.

I hated the idea of Sega Channel getting regional exclusive games. I was glad the service came out so late in the system's life and didn't take off although in retrospect it was probably a pretty good deal. My wife worked for a cable company at the time so she gave me some Sega Channel fridge magnets. I wonder if they're worth anything for collector's value. Probably not.
