View Full Version : Shining series
So lately I've been on a huge Shining Force kick. Played through Shining Force over the past few days and tonight I'm starting up Shining Force 2. Soon, hopefully, I'll be snagging a CDX and Shining Force CD with it.
After doing some reading one thing that I found interesting is how every game in the Shining series up to Shining Force III ties into the other games, and how there's actually a timeline for the entire series. Which goes:
Shining Force
Shining Force CD
Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict (JP Game Gear game)
Shining Force II
Shining Wisdom
Shining in the Darkness
Shining the Holy Ark
Shining Force III
And everything after that is just nonsense Sega whored out (kinda like Panzer Dragoon Orta).
Anyways, I must admit, despite having Shining Force II to look forward to, I'm dying to get ahold of Shining Force CD again, as that was always my favorite entry in the series. :)

That's awesome, I never knew what the timeline was. Sucks the GG one isn't in english. I always wish that episodes 2 and 3 on the saturn got translated.
I know there's a fan patch out there somewhere where you can burn the ISOs for Episode II and III and play them in English. I'd have to search for it again, but last I saw they had finished Episode II and had made a lot of progress on Episode III. Of course, this was... 2-3 years ago so hopefully they've finished by now.
You can emulate Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict in English, I've seen videos of it. :)
Anyways, here's how the games connect:
Shining Force
Shining Force CD - takes place 20 years after Shining Force and features the children of the original Shining Force.
Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict (JP Game Gear game) - Hero from Shining Force is in it as well as Adam. Main villain is Mishaela as she attempts to resurrect Darksol (villain from Shining Force). Also, Hawel is the father of Chaz (SFII) and the teacher of Kazin (SFII). And finally, Ian is Kane's son (from SF) and Mephisto is the son of Mshaela and Darksol.
Shining Force II
Shining Wisdom - Kazin and Sarah (both from SFII) are in it.
Shining in the Darkness - Dark Sol (named Mephisto in Japan) is the same as Mephisto from Final Conflict, the son of Mishaela and Darksol.
Shining the Holy Ark - Find Julian as a child and learn that he's looking for his missing father (Julian being the main character from SFIII Ep. III).
Shining Force III - Queen Anri is in it (from SF).

There are 3 GG ones. The CD game is kind of a remake of the GG ones. There are transhacks for them if you want to play the originals in English though.
I played a translated ROM of Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict a few weeks back. Brilliant little game tying the stories of Shining Force and Shining Force II together. If it wasn't so ugly and the sound so horrendous I might even place it up there with Shining Force CD (to me, SFCD is the absolute best, which makes the previous statement ironic since SFCD is just a remake of the first two GG games plus some extra stuff).

SFCD is pretty good. My only big thing was in the bonus battle at the end I could'nt use my own characters to fight the boss. I think most of my characters were at level 1 or soemthing like that.

I loved drawing the Shining Force characters in the fight modes, it was a big turning point for me in art lol.
