There's an insane amount of real info on the web about this game, so I figure this page can just be meanderings and whatnot about it. Not like anyone will read it anyway :)
Marvel versus Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
One of the greatest fighters of all time. First released in 2000 to arcades, with an arcade perfect release on the Dreamcast soon after. It is still actively played, 8 years later, remaining a major feature in the Street Fighter community and tournament scene. This is due to its large cast of characters, loose engine, and -- relatively speaking -- large tier of tournament worthy characters. Through shear fucking chaos and excess, a playable game managed to emerge.
What Rocks
- 56 characters. Capcom obviously had no idea how to balance this many characters (they can't even balance 8 characters), but the shear number of characters meant that a good balance was bound to emerge naturally, and it did. It's sort of the "million monkeys with typewriters will eventually type out all of Shakespeare's works" argument. Yeah of the 56 a lot are shear crap, *but* a lot are also very good! It can easily be argued 15 characters are quite capable and fall in the god, first or second tier. That's a very healthy number. The huge cast leading to a wide level of top characters is a major factor in why this game is still very actively played 8 years after release.
- The glitches. Almost all of them are good and accidentally improved the competitive level of the game. Juggernaut and Tron Bonne become pick-worthy simply due to their glitches. Glad Capcom never fixed them.
- Cable. He's the only new character that's any good, and damn is he ever. I just think they did a great job with him overall, from voice to animation to play style. Cable very much defines MvC2.
- Tron Bonne is another awesome new character. They did a good job with her and she's even playable thanks to her assist glitch.
- Venom is awesome in this version. He has a ton of combos and he's one of the faster LARGE characters in the game.
- Marrow is not bad either.
What Doesn't Rock
- The music. Jesus Christ Capcom. But now it's endearing in its own way :)
- Most COTA characters. Iceman and Colossus have like 2 frames of animation and about 2 specials. Iceman and Colossus are the worst offenders.
- Ruby Heart and Amingo. Retarded characters, see below on Amingo.
- Infinite launch assist kills. These are welcome really, and I don't mind doing them or getting killed by them. They just look retarded and clearly Capcom didn't consider this.
- Nerfing Spiderman. He's not as awesome as he once was. His timing seemed off and his recovery time for certain hits became overbearing.
Marvel rules, Capcom drools
Like all the other versus games, the Marvel characters tend to dominate. The likes of Cable, Sentinel, Magneto, Storm, Cyclops, Psylocke, Doom, Blackheart, Juggernaut, Spiral, and Iron Man dominate the top tiers of the game. While over on the Capcom side Strider is the only truly quality character. Although Zangief, Tron Bonne and Ken do get used for their assists, and Captain Commando was blessed with the best assist in the entire game (arguably, but for sure top 3).
Amingo, WTF?
One notable thing about MvC2 is Amingo. He's just horrible. What was Capcom thinking? He's a cactus ball with a sombrero, we're talking killer character design here. He's also essentially a pixie with no pixie mobility or priority. So what can he do? Well, all he can really do is suck. He does have some good normals, a couple easy infinites in the corner but he's just so limited in everything. One of the worst characters Capcom has ever put out. Not that Ruby Heart is much better.

- SRK, of course, the definitive source for all things Street Fighter.
- Zach D's MvC2 video repository more tournament and gameplay videos than you'll know what to do with. Also has lots of misc videos like combo vids, strategy vids, etc.
